Recently I’ve fallen in love with the name [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] (gay-bree-el) and also love the nn [name_m]Gabe[/name_m]. I typically love more unusual names ([name_m]Fox[/name_m] being my #1) and I also adore [name_m]Asher[/name_m] and [name_u]Kai[/name_u].
So I was wondering what everyone thought of this name? I’m not a particularly religious person but the religious association doesn’t bother me. I’m not sure if it’s super common though? I’ve never met anyone with the name personally.
I also kind of like it for a girl (not a fan of [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]) and randomly met a girl at work named [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] which I thought was neat.
I have always liked [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] and variations. I am like you in that I could take or leave the religious meaning, it doesn’t effect my thinking on the name. I had a [name_m]Gabe[/name_m] (full name [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]) in my grade in school. I’m a mid-80’s baby. But I also know Gabriels of all ages. All-in-all I’m a fan. I have never heard of a girl named [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] (instead of [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f] or [name_f]Gabriella[/name_f]) and I’m not certain I like that.
Some variations:
[name_m]Gavril[/name_m]
[name_u]Gavi[/name_u]
[name_u]Gabi[/name_u]
[name_u]Gabby[/name_u]
ummm… I guess that’s all I can think of.
I read a novel a few years ago and one of the name girls was named [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f] (spelled differently) and in my head I always pronounced it [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]. My husband corrected me when talking about it one day, but that name on a girl always stuck for me (not that I’d necessarily use it). Then randomly I get a phone call at work and the girl says “My name is [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], like a boy” and I just thought it was wonderful.
I think it’s a handsome name and masculine without being over the top macho (which is not my style at all). A lot of people have said it’s too feminine, which doesn’t come across to me at all! I’m an early 90s baby from the south and we had a lot of [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]'s but never a [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]. I’m glad I’m not the only fan of it!
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] is my all time favorite name. Its fantastic to me. Its strong and yet soft at the same time. Its serious but no too uptight. He’s just as comfortable with his nose in a book as he is with a baseball in hand.
I love it.
I love [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]! I imagine a really fun loving, light hearted, laid back guy who’s just a bit bonkers, so pretty awesome overall :). It’s quite popular where I live, but not enough to stop me loving it, which is actually quite a feat :P. But it is a really handsome name.
I love the name [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]! I have met a couple boys named [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] working in elementary schools, but it’s not that common. [name_f]Gabriella[/name_f] is one of my favorite names.
I have always loved [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]/[name_m]Gabe[/name_m] for a boy and I’ve never understood why it’s not more widely used. It’s a fantastic name, but I wouldn’t want to see it used on a girl.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], hate [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]. She is ALWAYS nicknamed [name_u]Gabby[/name_u]. Ugh. [name_m]Gabe[/name_m] is nice. Makes me think of a lanky green eyed boy with dirty blond hair, maybe a surfer, lol. [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] for a girl…mmm…idk. maybe as a middle.
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] is awesome! Strong, handsome, and not ridiculously common. I think of a deep, sweet, somewhat shy, musician-type guy. All around wholesome name.
[name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f] is annoying to me. Same with [name_f]Gabriella[/name_f]. I think of High School Musical/[name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] Hudgens. Sorry to any [name_u]Gabby[/name_u]'s out there.
It’s one of those names that I expect to be popular but it’s just never around here. It’s like… a name everyone is familiar with, but not commonly used in my area (far more Davids, Johns, [name_u]James[/name_u], and so on). I’m the same way though, usually if a name is popular I instantly mark it off the list.
Haha living by the beach, a surfer would work for me! I always picture a dark haired boy who is shy and artsy xD It’s a GP girl name for me. I tend to like boyish names for girls (I have one myself) but this name I wouldn’t actually use on a girl.
I despise [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]/[name_f]Gabriella[/name_f]! You’re right, it is ALWAYS [name_u]Gabby[/name_u] and the teacher always makes jokes about [name_u]Gabby[/name_u] “gabbing a lot in class”. Ugh. I grew up with a wonderful girl names [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f], but she went by [name_u]Gabby[/name_u] and it drove me nuts.
I’m typically not a fan of “girl versions” of names. I have a boyish name, so I guess that’s why they appeal to me. I’m used to it and kind of like it This is more of a quirky GP girl name for me, I wouldn’t use it for a girl personally but I kind of liked the quirkyness of it in the book and actually meeting a girl with that name.
I think [name_m]Gabe[/name_m] is cute! [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] is obviously wonderful, but everyone gets a nickname at some point so I try to make sure I enjoy the inevitable nickname that will pop up. I had a name I loved, but the nn was “rick” and I just…can’t stand it. So I had to remove it from the list. I agree though, it seems that everyone knows the name, but you don’t encounter a lot of people with the name (where as you come across a ton of [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]/Gabriellas in my area).
I imagine the same type of person for [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]
[name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]/[name_f]Gabriella[/name_f] annoys me because it seems like a name that’s trying to be pretty and fancy and just isn’t. I think it’s because the major go to nn is [name_u]Gabby[/name_u], which is really unappealing to me. It also seems very very dated to me (I guess because I grew up in the early 90’s and there were a TON of [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]'s in my area)
