Opinions on India

[name]Hi[/name],
What do you think of [name]India[/name]?
I love it! You might be thinking oh God, a [name]Brit[/name] liking the name [name]India[/name]! But for me it’s not like that, I love the name [name]India[/name] because of a little girl called [name]India[/name] that I used to read to. She wa so adorable!
Anyway, I love this name, but what do you think?
Thanks
[name]Ellie[/name] xx

It’s a pretty name, but I personally think it’s a little silly to use the name unless you have any sort of connection to the country or heritage considering that’s the first thing anyone will think of when they hear the name.

It’s pretty, but I prefer [name]Indiana[/name]. Also, there’s just too much controversy surrounding this name.

Brutal honesty: i adore the name [name]India[/name] and will probably use it one day.

Everyone here on nameberry talks about how offensive it is as a name…and then one day i realized that none of the people talking about how offensive it is are [name]Indian[/name]. So i asked an [name]Indian[/name] friend of mine who was mystified as to why it would be offensive. And it might just be me, but a white person being all “that’s offensive to an entire ethnicity i don’t belong to because i say so” is what’s actually offensive…

If an [name]Indian[/name] Nameberry sees this and actually does find [name]India[/name] offensive i would like to know, so PM me or respond in-thread. So far all I’ve seen are non-Indians trying to dictate what is and isn’t offensive to someone else and why.

Search for threads about this name. We don’t need any more. Everything that could be said already has been.

I love the sound of it but am not a fan of city/country names (with the exception of [name]Florence[/name]). I don’t think it is offensive, but I’m not [name]Indian[/name], so perhaps my opinion isn’t one you’d actually need to be concerned about. Also, I don’t immediately think of colonialism when I imagine a [name]Brit[/name] with a child called [name]India[/name]. [name]Hope[/name] this helps

I think it is lovely, I can see her sisters being named [name]Cosima[/name], [name]Hermione[/name] and [name]Arabella[/name].

I love it and I especially like the nn [name]Indy[/name]. So cute

And yeah, you may find old threads on NB where a few Americans have had issues with [name]India[/name], but being a [name]Brit[/name] you’ll know no one has issues with it here.

I’m not [name]Indian[/name], but there is an [name]India[/name] thread where a berry called jyoti, who says that he/she is of [name]Indian[/name] origin, is offended by the usage of the name.

India - Should it be used?

Yes me too! I’d actually like to hear from anyone outside N. [name]America[/name] who finds it offensive. I haven’t seen any on NB so far. Also, is your friend American? Interesting to hear about an [name]Indian[/name] American who finds it mystifying. I asked my [name]Brit[/name]. [name]Indian[/name] friend a few months back and he laughed out loud and said something rather rude :stuck_out_tongue:

Seems like only Americans find [name]India[/name] offensive for some reason. I love it! It’s on my list. I think it’s an adorable name.

LOL @ “for some reason”

I guess it it sounds pretty trumps a legacy of brutal oppression and colonialism.

STOP. Stop, stop, stop. This argument was horribly ugly last time. STOP.

@cosmonaut - Well, I’ve yet to come across a non-American who finds [name]India[/name] an offensive name despite its history.

What part of ‘stop’ isn’t sinking in here? x___x

Renrose, in the nicest way possible, you aren’t a mod, to my knowledge, and this is obviously a topic people are interested in discussing.

To the poster who asked: my [name]Indian[/name] friend is from [name]India[/name] but moved to the states as a young child so he grew up here

@renrose - Actually, I posted at the exact same time you did

Also, we can discuss this issue if we want to.

I know a bunch of Aussies who find it off, but only some are of [name]Indian[/name] descent and the rest are UK-descent Australian. I hadn’t thought about the issue much, honestly, but mentioned the name because I like [name]India[/name].[name]Arie[/name], and my Australian husband’s reaction was literally “what? No. No celebrating British colonialism in my family kthanx.”

I’m half [name]Indian[/name], and I don’t find it disrespectful at all. To be completely honest, I find it really neat. It’s a beautiful name!

That argument, if you care to see it: India - Should it be used?

I asked some of my [name]Indian[/name] friends afterward, and they didn’t think it should be used either. There were protests in India because the Bush family called their cat India (after a baseball player called ‘El Indio’).
