I am curious what people think of [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] as the first name. My husband and I need an “L” name to honor his mom who passed away so we didn’t go with a more formal version of [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] like [name_f]Alexa[/name_f] or [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] or [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] as my husband prefers just [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] alone plus it satisfies our need for a first name starting with L. We explored many other L names and we always come back to [name_u]Lexi[/name_u]; we really do like it. I am still interested in outside opinions just to gain a better sense of the common perception of this name. In my research online, I found very harsh criticism on this name. Here are the comments I came across: " It sounds like stripper or a porn star; it is meant to be only a nickname; it is not a proper first name; it is not a classy name; it is way overused; she will hate her name when she grows up; she will hate being called sexy [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] her whole life; her name will hurt her chance of getting a decent job; it will look bad on a resume; it is a dumb excuse for a name" and the list goes on and on. I was stunned by the level of overall negativity and anger / disgust this name generated for many people on various sites/forums online so I wanted to check it out here just to prepare myself for what to expect in the years ahead. To me the name sounds so feminine and pretty and I realize it is my opinion and my husband’s opinion that matters the most in naming our daughter. [name_m]Even[/name_m] so, we plan to surprise family and friends with the name after she is born and I am preparing myself that it might be received with low enthusiasm based on I what see online. As for the middle name we are still between 2 possibilities; [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] ( a double middle name to honor both of my grandmas who passed by using an “M” and an “R” name) or [name_f]Abbygail[/name_f] to honor my husband’s mother again whose middle name was [name_f]Gail[/name_f]. So I welcome feedback on the middle name also. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] or [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] [name_f]Abbygail[/name_f]? I realize the more common spelling is [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] but [name_f]Abbygail[/name_f] is a hebrew derivative and I am a huge fan of the name [name_u]Abby[/name_u] so I like the look of [name_f]Abbygail[/name_f]. But I also love [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] so I am very torn. What sounds prettier? Thanks for helping me with this !
My best friend growing was [name_u]Lexi[/name_u]. Her full name was [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] but no one ever called her that. I don’t think it sounds stripperish as you can just as easily be a stripper named [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f]. I don’t like to classify names like that. No one ever called her sexy [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] because people we grew up with had manners. I hope people are still raising their children to be respectful.
I would hope that people will not critizize your name choice once she is here. That would be very unbecoming of them and would only reflect their character, not baby [name_u]Lexi[/name_u]'s. Your name choice is honouring your [name_f]MIL[/name_f] and something you keep coming back to. Use it! I do prefer [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u].
Maybe use [name_f]Lexia[/name_f] or [name_f]Lexine[/name_f] if the comments online do hit a nerve with you? It’s less nickname-y, and doesn’t rhyme with sexy. You can still call her [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] (as a nickname )
Otherwise, stick with [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] if you both really like it, because people online are just that, people online, who you don’t know, and who don’t know you.
I personally prefer [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] over [name_f]Abbygail[/name_f], which is not a more hebrew derivative I believe. " From the Hebrew name ”ֲבִיגָיִל ('Avigayil) meaning “my father is joy”. " (behindthename)
Thank you for this feedback! I look forward to more perspectives
I’m sorry for the negative feedback you’ve received. I’ve found that many people on these names forums ENJOY giving negative feedback and being flat out rude. Criticizing names is fun to them. I guess they advised you to use a better name such as [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] or [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] or [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. So ridiculous!!! Anyway, [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] is a lovey name! I had a friend in school with this name and I was always slightly jealous of it! I thought it was fun and spunky, yet beautiful and elegant plus girly! All wrapped in to one. It can definetly work for a little girl or for a CEO or anything in between. [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] [name_f]Abbygail[/name_f] has a nice flow!
I think [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] works fine on its own. I would go with [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u].
The thing with us nameberries is that we are all pretty open to names: we all have our crazy names that go so far beyond the Emmas, Olivias, and Sophias that I almost never see anyone shoot down another berry’s name.
However, we are just a small sample. I think realistically, one must admit the stereotypes/nicknames/etc exist for [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] that you mentioned. They do, no matter how much we adults pish-posh them. I think the question is not “will people think this,” but “do I want to deal with people thinking this”, or if you want your kid to have to deal with it. I know an [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] that goes by [name_u]Lexi[/name_u], and her instagram name has so many x’s in it–I cringe every time I read it.
BUT, even with those stereotypes, [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] is no [name_m]Cougar[/name_m] or [name_f]Dorcas[/name_f]. It’s a common, even familiar name–especially in the bigger picture.
If these things really bother you, I’m sure you can find another name that starts with an L. If not, then go with it! But go with your gut, or you may end up with name regret.
I like a previous poster’s suggestion of [name_f]Lexia[/name_f], only because it’s more unique than [name_u]Lexi[/name_u].
Good luck!
[name_u]Lexi[/name_u] is super cute! I know lots of little [name_f]Leni[/name_f] and [name_f]Lani[/name_f] babies at the moment so it fits right in! She will met probably get just ‘[name_u]Lex[/name_u]’ at some point too. I prefer [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u]. It looks amazing written down. Definitely stay with your favourite. [name_f]Every[/name_f] name has teasing potential but luckily kids today don’t care. I’m a teacher of 5-12 yr olds and I’ve hardly ever heard name teasing. I think because there are so many unique names now kids don’t bother.
I love [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_u]Raye[/name_u]!
I think [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] is an ADORABLE name, it makes me think of someone smart and funny and not a stripper at all
There are enough [name_u]Lexi[/name_u]'s out there that it isn’t known as a tacky name. It’s not my personal style, and the sexy [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] would bother me, but I can see the appeal. I like [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u]
I think [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] is cute and girly, I don’t see anything negative about it. I slightly prefer [name_f]Lexa[/name_f], but that’s just me.
[name_u]Lexi[/name_u] [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] is adorable, and I love that it honours family.
[name_f]Lexa[/name_f] [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]/[name_f]Abbygail[/name_f] would also be lovely.
Good luck!
I really like the sound of [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u]!
