[name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I are expecting our first child–a boy! We’ve considered a few names, but we really love [name_m]Lysander[/name_m]. It’s literary, and not very common–which we love–but we want to make sure that it will still work for him as he grows up. What are y’all’s opinions on the name? Is it confusing? Pretentious? [name_u]Or[/name_u] interesting?
For further context: our last name is Champion. How does [name_m]Lysander[/name_m] Champion sound? Because both names are fairly long, we’re going to go with a one-syllable middle name.
I think [name_m]Lysander[/name_m] is handsome! It has plenty of nicknames for if he grows up and finds the full name to be too much for him. I think since it’s so similar to the uber-popular [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] it doesn’t seem too confusing or pretentious. [name_m]Lysander[/name_m] Champion sounds good!
Another idea is [name_m]Evander[/name_m], which feels more familiar but is still unique.
I like [name_m]Lysander[/name_m]! although, I must confess, I’m reading A Midsummer [name_u]Night[/name_u]’s [name_u]Dream[/name_u] right now . [name_m]Lysander[/name_m] Champion-- elegant and grounded but not overdone.
I really like [name_m]Lysander[/name_m]! I second @tallemaja’s suggestion of [name_m]Evander[/name_m] and I’ll also add [name_m]Leander[/name_m] which I love
I know a toddler with this name, I had never considered it before he was born. Tbh, I had some doubts when I first heard it as the ‘[name_f]Lys[/name_f]’ sound was 1 I had only heard in girls names (e.g. [name_f]Melissa[/name_f]) But, I was used to it in about 2 days, and he has personified the name into something i really love. It is regal and literary and a little bit mischievous at the same time. He has no nicknames, either, always the full name, and it’s perfect ^^
This is really encouraging, thank you! We’re considering [name_u]Lee[/name_u] as a possible nickname: the “ly” part of [name_m]Lysander[/name_m] is pronounced like “lie” but [name_u]Lee[/name_u] is close enough and runs in the family
If this means anything, the original Greek pronunciation is [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-san-der so that’s another reason to use [name_u]Lee[/name_u]! I think it works either way though and is a sweet nickname.
I agree! [name_m]Lysander[/name_m] is a big name, even more so with the surname Champion, but I love the drama of it. [name_m]Lysander[/name_m] is super rare but feels familiar because of its fashionable sound ([name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_u]Oliver[/name_u], etc.) I think you should lean in to the drama and go for it!
