Opinions on Sebastian

What do you think about the name [name]Sebastian[/name]? Like it or no? When you picture someone named [name]Sebastian[/name], what kind of person do you imagine?

My husband and I are expecting a boy in [name]April[/name] and have been going back and forth on names for awhile… We both really like [name]Sebastian[/name], but everyone we’ve mentioned it to has a pretty negative reaction. My mom said that she immediately pictured a judge on Project Runway… my in-laws feel like it’s pretentious. But it’s a fairly popular name- so surely the popular opinion of the name is generally positive?

I don’t know… We’re okay with some of our friends and family not loving the name (in fact, most of them disliked our first son’s name- [name]Jonah[/name]) but I am concerned about our child being judged negatively based on his name… I don’t want him to be constantly stereotyped or feel any pressure to be a certain way… I guess in general I don’t like names that come with baggage/expectations (like naming a child [name]Mozart[/name] or [name]Adonis[/name]).

What do you think?

[name]Sebastian[/name] is a great name. I admit that sometimes it sounds a bit posh, but I think it’s growing popularity has made it more accessible to the average family. [name]Love[/name] the nn [name]Seb[/name], but [name]Bastian[/name] works too. Side note: I also really like your son’s name, [name]Jonah[/name].

I love the name [name]Sebastian[/name]!
Personally, I think it is much less pretentious than most of these trendy names out there right now.
It sounds very classic to me.
(it is also very nice as a middle name if you need to end up compromising)

Fantastic name! I’m so happy it’s gaining in popularity - there will be a lot of more Sebastians in the world, and that’s awesome. Not too keen on the nicknames [name]Seb[/name] or Sebby, but I really like [name]Baz[/name].

I love [name]Sebastian[/name] and it’s one of my personal favourites. It ages well and has heaps of nickname options if your into that, on that hasn’t been mentioned is [name]Ash[/name]. At the end of the day it’s your choice not your parents and in-laws, so if you like it go for it!

I’m very surprised it got a negative reaction, my worry about it has been that it might be too popular! Surely it’s a pretty classic name? I seem to know a lot of little [name]Sebastian[/name]'s at the moment.

I really like it. It does have a “posh” feel about it, but think that will change as it gets more popular. [name]Just[/name] look at previous “posh” names like [name]Beatrice[/name], [name]Harriet[/name] etc. Prefer [name]Bas[/name] or [name]Baz[/name] as nickname. I think of a really cool guy, maybe a bit rocky/hippy. Probably in a band. Lol

It drives me bonkers when people say a name is pretentious without really know the meaning of the word pretentious!

I think [name]Sebastian[/name] is handsome. It is also quite popular, so I am guessing a lot of people think it is handsome (It is in the #34 in [name]Canada[/name] and #68 in the US). It has meaning, history and great nickname potential! While it isn’t one of my favorite names, it is a great name! I live in a french community where [name]Sebastien[/name]/[name]Sebastian[/name] has been used more commonly for years so to me it just sounds like the boy next door kind of a name and not posh at all.

I like [name]Sebastian[/name]! Very Twelfth [name]Night[/name], [name]Viola[/name]'s twin brother! It’s ranked at #47 in [name]England[/name], 1493 boys were given the name in 2011. Familiar and beautiful, but not overused. I picture someone smart, artistic and lots of fun!

I also am in love with [name]Sebastian[/name]!

It has always been one of my favorite boys names - Definitely because of Twelfth [name]Night[/name] and Dangerous Liaisons. And I always thought that Cruel Intentions would have catapulted the name into popularity, but here in the Midwest, it isn’t as popular.

I never thought of suggesting this to my husband for our fist son ([name]Weston[/name]). His family was really unreceptive at the time. But over the last five years, my husband has branched out and become more open to name choices.

[name]Sebastian[/name] is at the top of our current list… for now. My nickname of choice is [name]Baz[/name].

As a side note, when I mentioned our name choice to family, my dad’s response was: “Well, its your kid…” He called back about an hour later and completely changed his tune though. My mother in law preferred the other names we were considering, but our son’s name has grown on her and I am sure that she couldn’t picture him with any other name now. I wouldn’t worry too much about your family’s response. It will grow on them.

THis is one of our top names. It’s probably my husband’s front-runner, but he has issue with names that don’t have good nicknames for some reason so he keeps going back to that…I don’t really care about nicknames that much, but he’s kind of obsessed about the issue.

[name]Sebastian[/name] is one of my top boy names currently. When I told my mom, she said, “But what would you call him?” as in “What will his nickname be? [name]Sebastian[/name] is such a loooong name!” But I think you could always just call him … [name]SEBASTIAN[/name]. I’m not a fan of [name]Seb[/name] as a nickname but I like [name]Baz[/name] and even [name]Ash[/name] as someone suggested.

I think [name]Sebastian[/name] is great because it’s kind of different (depending on where you live) but it’s still a name everyone is familiar with. Also it’s just fun to say.

[name]Sebastian[/name] can seem a little posh, but I think it’s a great name! I’m a teacher and I recently taught a [name]Sebastian[/name] at a state school and he was definitely not posh! He went by the nickname [name]Seb[/name] and didn’t get any stick for his name, if you’re worried about that!

[name]Sebastian[/name] is my absolute [name]FAVORITE[/name] boys name (unfortunately, my husband doesn’t like it!). I think it’s such a wonderful name. Everyone has heard of it, knows how to pronounce it - and while it’s rising in popularity, it’s not too common. I don’t love the nicknames, however. But…who says he has to use a nickname? My name is [name]Victoria[/name] and I’ve never gone by a nickname - even though it’s very much a nn-heavy name.

Anyway, I picture a cute little boy named [name]Sebastian[/name], or a distinguished, intelligent young man/adult. It’s perfect! I think [name]Sebastian[/name] [name]James[/name] is a nice fn/mn combo.

I like Sebastion. It doesn’t really come across as pretentious to me. I prefer just Bastion over Sebastion though. Much as I do love a lot of longer names, I tend towards simplicity when actually choosing a name.

Thanks for the input! Good to hear from other people who like the name. I know that our family will come around… just looking for some reassurance that the name is viewed pretty positively in general. I think we’re getting close to making it official. Now we just have to break it gently to the grandparents…
