I love this name but I do prefer it on a girl. I don’t care much for the name on a boy but I have seen more boys with this name than girls. It’s purely unisex in my opinion so it works for either.
I’m gonna be completely honest, but when I hear the name ‘[name_u]Shiloh[/name_u]’, I immeadietly think of a ‘[name_m]Silo[/name_m]’ which is a pig feeder.
I’m not a fan since I’m never sure how I should pronounce it, and I’m not really digging the look of [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u]. But I do agree that it is completely unisex and definitely usable!
I’m curious how you would pronounce it. It always bothered me when people mispronounced my name ([name_f]Breanna[/name_f]) so I would be slightly hesitant to subject my child to the same fate. Although if it’s just too hard to find names I like I might not care as much about how people pronounce it, since a lot of names can be said in other ways.
I’d pronounce it like “SHY-loh”, but keep in mind that English is not my first language and the majority would probably pronounce it correctly. If not, you can just correct people a few times and I’m sure they’ll remember the next time.
P.S. I totally get you! My name is constantly mispronounced as well and it really does bother me, but I’ve gotten used to it now. I mean having an unusual name is fun and all, but the constant mispronunciation is just tiresome.
I think it’s OK - it feels trendy and “celeb” to me because of Brangelina, but it has an interesting look and sound. I don’t think of it as more for one sex than another.
Totally usable and a fine name for a boy, but not really my thing.
SHY-loh is the correct (or at least most common) way to pronounce it, and I think that most people will pronounce it that way, which would be nice. I wonder though if some might pronounce it SHEE-loh since “i” makes the “ee” sound in some languages.
And don’t get me started on how many ways there are to SPELL my name ([name_f]Breanna[/name_f], [name_f]Brianna[/name_f], [name_f]Briana[/name_f], [name_f]Breana[/name_f], Brieanna…). For me that’s more annoying than mispronunciation haha.
I definitely was wondering whether it was SHY-loh or SHEE-loh, since in Croatian -i is pronounced as -ee. But since I’ve been learning English for over a decade now, every time I read something in English (like this post) I read all the names as an English person would do, even though while speaking Croatian I would say them differently. But [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] is such an unusual name I’ve never heard pronounced and I just couldn’t figure it. To me, both SHY-loh and SHEE-loh seem okay though. I think I actually prefer the SHEE-loh pronounciation a bit, but that’s up to you though!
And yeah, I get you on the spelling issue. Being [name_f]Helena[/name_f] (and occasionally [name_f]Jelena[/name_f]) all the time instead of [name_f]Elena[/name_f] was definitely not fun!
So far the results seem to show that around 50% of people either like it or don’t have a problem with it, and the other 50% are unsure or don’t like it at all. It’s also interesting a few of those who prefer it as a girl’s name are not necessarily opposed to it being a boy’s name. It might be, perhaps, more accepted as unisex than I had previously thought. It’s actually quite comforting to know that it’s not strictly seen as a girl name, and also that it’s not some universally hated name either. I suspect the trend will continue in this way, but the poll is still open for a couple days and I would love any additional thoughts leading up to then if there are any.
I really like this name! I understand that it’s unisex, but for me, it is still all boy. It was a little while before I realized it was used on girls, too. I’m still not familiar with the dog…As for the Civil War battle, [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] was just the name of the nearest town.
