Hey all! [name]Just[/name] wanted to see what everyone thought of this unusual name and the spelling. If you remember our girls list we had Niyan as one if our top three. It originated from this name but I was worried the spelling would be too complicated. What do you think?
PS I love Nigh for short!
I’m not totally sure on the pronunciation, but to me it looks awfully close to a racial slur.
I think if someone read this name carefully, they may be able to come up with the pronunciation [name]NYE[/name]-in (is this correct?), because Nigh and Inn are both English words. But unfortunately I think in most cases people will glance at this name and just give you a blank look because it’s not at all familiar. The name sounds lovely and I agree the nn Nigh is really cute. I love the idea of using original Scottish spelling, but in practice I think this might be cumbersome.
I don’t usually advocate invented spellings, but if you want to use this name, I would actually spell it Nyan. The pronunciation seems very clear, and the spelling is really easy to explain: it’s [name]Ryan[/name] with an N instead of an R. I prefer this to Niyan because it is simpler, the pronunciation seems clearer (if I’m pronouncing it right!), and it looks maybe a tad more authentic (even though both spellings are made up, right?)

Thanks everyone! Definitely confirmed my fears about the spelling! I think it is supposed to be pronounced nigh(like night)-inn. We’ll stick with the alternate spelling if we use it!
