[name]One[/name] of my absolute favorite names for a girl for a while now has been [name]Phoenix[/name]. I’m still a teenager, so I’m nowhere near the point of picking out names for an actual child. But if I were, cute nicknames would be [name]Nixi[/name] or [name]Nix[/name] probably. I also love the meaning, and the legend of the [name]Phoenix[/name] behind it. (For those of you who don’t know, Phoenixes are legendary birds with the ability to regenerate from ashes after bursting into flames.)
I still love the name, but wanted to get some outside opinions! Is it stupid? Cute? Too weird? Too hard-core? Meaningful?
To be brutally honest, it feels a little tacky. It doesn’t feel like something that would be taken seriously as an adult, it wouldn’t age well. What about [name]Phoebe[/name] as an alternative? Or make it a middle name?
I’ve been name obsessed since I was 14, so I know where your coming from, just make your list and have fun, your feelings will likely change when it comes time to actually have a baby. I was OBSESSED with [name]Aurora[/name] for AGES…years and years and when I got pregnant with my son, it wasn’t even an option, my tastes had changed, developed and matured. But for the moment, there is nothign wrong with having lists of favorites.
In all honesty, I prefer it on a boy. It’s not despicable on a girl, but it seems a bit strange. My first impression is [name]Jean[/name] [name]Gray[/name] of X-Men fame, who happened to go by [name]Phoenix[/name]. Seems fine on a kid, but I can’t imagine it on an adult too well.
I love “phoenix” as a word, however, I live in [name]Phoenix[/name], [name]Arizona[/name] and hate the city. I know you prefer the bird meaning behind it, but nevertheless it is a place name, and for me it just has a bad connotation.
I can’t say that I like the name [name]Phoenix[/name] for a girl. It sounds rather masculine to me, and I think it might be subject to ridicule from other kids. Here are some other ideas:
[name]Phoebe[/name]- Has a similar beginning and means “[name]Bright[/name], shining”
[name]Beatrix[/name]- Has a similar ending, has the possibility for cute nicknames, and means “Bringer of joy”
[name]Iris[/name]- Has the “legend” element
Maybe you could use [name]Phoenix[/name] as a middle name?
I definitely think it is unique and meaningful. If you lived in [name]Arizona[/name], I would not name your daughter [name]Phoenix[/name]. I actually see [name]Phoenix[/name] as a boys name because of the hard X.
Personally, I find it too dark and harsh for a little girl. [name]Even[/name] the nicknames [name]Nixi[/name] and [name]Nix[/name]. I think it’s definitely just suited for boys . . . : )
I think it’s nice as a nickname but not as a first name. It doesn’t age well and may be a little too unique for most people. Could possibly work as a middle name.
Actually, I was just thinking yesterday, I’m so glad I didn’t have children in my teens. Otherwise, I would’ve named them [name]Phoenix[/name], [name]Lilith[/name], and Dragon (no joke, these were actual names on my list).
[name]Phoenix[/name] is beautiful and spunky, and it’s a great mythological creature, but as a first name it’s sooo much!
I did know an adult [name]Phoenix[/name]. They were genderqueer, female-assigned-at-birth. But they chose the name [name]Phoenix[/name] for themselves, and it was okay for them because they ran in alternative crowds (you know, the tattooed lot, activists). Worrying about getting a job at a law firm wasn’t a concern. Maybe use it as a nickname? Or a middle?
