Hello, everyone! Here’s a challenge for you all: what names can be associated with specific organs, ex: lungs, liver and pancreas?
I’m currently writing my second novel that is about a genetic engineering experiment. Before getting genetically ‘perfect’ humans, the laboratory that runs the experiments created seven failures, each of whom now serves as a ‘backup’ incase any of the perfect experiments begins to have problems. These seven (now 19 to 21 year olds) are each assigned an organ to forcibly ‘donate’ if something goes wrong. Six legal organ transplants that take place in the United States are the heart, intestines, lungs, liver, pancreas, and kidney. (I added brain to this list just for fun. =])
I’m looking for names that could be associated with the lungs, liver and pancreas, but sound ‘normal’ enough that the associations aren’t forced. For example, [name]Ren[/name] is latin for kidney, and still sounds like a name I could hear where I live. [name]Tess[/name] or [name]Tessa[/name] is also a common name, and can still be associated with intestines because of the similar sound.
Lungs
[name]Abel[/name] - means “breath”
[name]Eve[/name] - derived from Hebrew word “to breathe”.
Liver
[name]Oliver[/name]
[name]Gulliver[/name]
[name]Tolliver[/name]
All the names above have liver in them. OK, let’s me sneaky!
[name]Olivia[/name] / [name]Livia[/name]
[name]Bo[/name] - derived from Old Norse meaning “to live”
Pancreas
Pancras - saint name and railway station in [name]London[/name]
[name]Pandora[/name]
[name]Pansy[/name]
[name]Cressida[/name]
Sounds like an interesting story! [name]Happy[/name] writing!
Regards,
[name]Mischa[/name].
What about the names of the surgeons who performed the first transplant?
[name]Christiaan[/name] [name]Barnard[/name]: first heart transplant
[name]Ralph[/name] Deterling or [name]Richard[/name] Lillehei (depends on who you ask): first intestinal transplant
[name]James[/name] [name]Hardy[/name]: first lung transplant
[name]Thomas[/name] Starzl: first liver transplant
W.D. [name]Kelly[/name] and [name]Richard[/name] Lillehei: first pancreatic transplant
[name]Joseph[/name] [name]Murray[/name], J. [name]Hartwell[/name] [name]Harrison[/name], and [name]John[/name] P. [name]Merrill[/name]: first kidney transplant
What about [name]Paloma[/name] for the lungs? It’s sort of similar to pulmonology.
Quorra - heart in Italian
[name]Thaddeus[/name] or [name]Tadeo[/name] - heart
[name]Samuel[/name] - God’s heart
[name]Cordelia[/name] - heart
[name]Cordis[/name] - heart
Kokoro - heart in Japanese
I came across this page while looking for the same thing. [name_f]May[/name_f] I ask if you publish on any writing site? Like Wattpad? I would love to read it!
I think that the doctor idea is kind of genius! I would go with the first patient ever having a successful transplant/ first person to ever have their organs successfully taken from them and transplanted. I love the idea because it’s so subtle nobody will realize what you’ve done unless they take it upon themselves to research it— which if they love the book, they will! Tell us if you ever get this published, interesting idea
