Owen...too popular-need alternates

We just found out that we are expecting a boy (as I suspected). I’ve been kicking around (no pun intended) a few boys names such as [name]Declan[/name], [name]Ewan[/name] and [name]Oliver[/name]. We have a daughter named [name]Beatrice[/name] and want to keep with a classic name like that. We love [name]Owen[/name], but hate the popularity (in [name]America[/name] it is in the 30s in rank). Any suggestions for similar classic names? Thanks for the help!

Dangit! I had a bunch of names and I accidentally hit a button and lost it all! :frowning:
Lets hope I can remember most of the names!

I really like [name]Declan[/name], and at #349 I don’t think that’s too popular. However, the similar [name]Devlin[/name] is much less popular (it didn’t have a number here)

Here’s a few classic sounding names…(at least to me they do!)

[name]Chauncey[/name]/ [name]Chance[/name]
[name]Howard[/name] (nn [name]Ward[/name])

My favs: [name]Hugh[/name], [name]Conrad[/name], [name]Howard[/name] ([name]Ward[/name]), [name]Felix[/name]

PS - I sort of strayed from “classic” on some of these, but they’re all “older” sounding. Sorry if I got waaay off base here!

I love [name]Beatrice[/name] and [name]Oliver[/name] together! I know that [name]Oliver[/name] is moving up, but it’s definitely in the classic camp for me, so I don’t think it will sound dated. I’m also a former [name]Owen[/name] fan, but was scared off by its popularity :frowning:

I [name]LOVE[/name] ricamaca’s suggestion of [name]Arthur[/name]. Here are a few others to think about…

[name]Edward[/name] (#145)
[name]Emmett[/name] (#576)
[name]Philip[/name] (#364)
[name]Dexter[/name] (#824)
[name]Jasper[/name] (#471)
[name]Elliott[/name] (#389)
[name]Frederick[/name] (#531)
[name]Walter[/name] (#378)

I totally agree with the previous posters about [name]Declan[/name] and [name]Oliver[/name], and I think your daughter’s name, [name]Beatrice[/name], is great!

[name]Beatrice[/name] and…
[name]Colin[/name] (although it may be too popular for you in the low #100’s)
[name]George[/name] (#147 may be too popular for you, though)

Good luck, and welcome to Nameberry!

I love [name]Oliver[/name]!

I also love [name]Hugh[/name] that someone suggested.

A couple more:

I adore [name]Beatrice[/name]! Here’s some of my favorites for boys that you might like.

[name]Julian[/name], [name]Julius[/name]

P.S. I also love the suggestions of [name]Arthur[/name], [name]Emmett[/name], and [name]Simon[/name]!

Considering your daughter’s name is [name]Beatrice[/name] (so lovely!), my favorites of everyone’s ideas are [name]Declan[/name], [name]Arthur[/name], [name]Kenneth[/name], and [name]Edward[/name]. You could name him [name]Otis[/name] instead of [name]Owen[/name].

Other ideas:
[name]Harvard[/name] nn [name]Harvey[/name]

I had to chime in because I have a [name]Beatrix[/name]. Her older brother is [name]Ronan[/name] [name]Edgar[/name]. (My surname is [name]Kelly[/name], so I really wanted to go the Irish route with him.)

I also love [name]Declan[/name]!
Good luck,

My youngest son is named [name]Owen[/name], after his Irish grandfather. [name]Owen[/name]'s popularity is mostly due to its similarity to such surname-names as [name]Rowan[/name] and [name]Logan[/name], I think, so if you want similar but less popular, I’d recommend going to [name]Owen[/name]'s classic Welsh or Irish side. (The name really is Welsh, but used frequently in [name]Ireland[/name] where it’s often spelled [name]Eoin[/name] or [name]Eoghan[/name].) The nameberryites as usual made lots of amazing suggestions along those lines. Search by origin for other Welsh or Irish names that may connect. Let us know what you decide!

Thanks for everyone’s suggestions! I love [name]Felix[/name] (I was a big Avonlea fan when I was younger), [name]Hugh[/name], [name]Emmett[/name], [name]Ewan[/name] and [name]Arthur[/name] and [name]Linus[/name] (do you think that name can shake the Peanuts reference?). Thanks again to all who suggested names!

I would suggest [name]Colin[/name]/[name]Collin[/name] or [name]Olin[/name] - I love [name]Olin[/name] - have a friend who used that for her baby boy. Has a similar sound but is not common.

I have a friend names [name]Olin[/name] which i looove …and its close to owen

Perhaps [name]Warren[/name] (similar sound) or [name]Gilbert[/name]. Someone mentioned [name]Philip[/name], and I can recommend that one; it served my brother well.

[name]Owen[/name] is my favorite boy name…here’s what else I love

don’t love as much but throwing them out there:

As mom to a [name]Rowan[/name], I have to suggest that!
I also love [name]Ewan[/name] and [name]Declan[/name] (love the possible meaning of “full of goodness”).
I think [name]Linus[/name] can transcend the peanuts reference (DH did not). I love the mythological story of [name]Linus[/name] teaching the gods music!
