This is the name of one of my client’s baby boys. I don’t remember his middle name (it was something clearly Welsh though). Anyway, just thought I would share. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you feel about this? Is it really any different than say [name_f]Wren[/name_f] or [name_f]Lark[/name_f]?
I don’t think it is much different than [name_f]Wren[/name_f], [name_f]Lark[/name_f], [name_u]Robin[/name_u], etc, but I don’t care for the sound of it. If it was the middle name and it flowed smoothly, it could sound pretty/handsome. It is a great idea though. I like [name_f]Oriole[/name_f] for a middle name, for a girl*, so I cannot judge the concept or usage of Owl as a name.
Hmm. Interesting. Where I’m from, we hang things on our gutters to keep the pesky owls away, so my connotation is bad, but I get the appeal. “As wise as an owl,” maybe?
I don’t think it flows nicely as a name I mean it may not be any different conceptually than naming your child [name_f]Lark[/name_f] or [name_f]Wren[/name_f], but audibly it is much different. Like car names…[name_f]Porsche[/name_f], [name_u]Bentley[/name_u], [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] and [name_u]Lexus[/name_u] aren’t technically any different than Toyota, Honda and Volkswagen, but they don’t all work when it comes to naming a human.
Lol. Yea, I want to like it, but it just conjures up the memories of the one time I was stuck in barn at night with a huge barn owl as a child. Beautiful animals and I like them in general (other than barn owls), I am just on the fence. Obviously, it’s not my child so my opinion really doesn’t matter.
I think it’s cute. I’ve always thought Owlette for a little girl would be adorable. To be fair, owls are my favorite animal.
Owl sounds too much like howl or oww.
It will always remind me of [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] the pooh
Sorry that’s a foolish name and the poor kid that will have to spend his life explaining it will not thank his parents for sticking him with it.
A bit harsh for me- like someone else said above, there’s a difference between [name_u]Bentley[/name_u] and Volvo LOL
Owl is the same as Volvo … And doesn’t really work. But I’m sure if a celeb uses it - it will rocket in popularity
It works as a name, but it just doesn’t have the most pleasant sound.
I guess in theory its no different than [name_f]Lark[/name_f], but the difference is as others have pointed out it doesn’t sound good. I wonder what inspired the parents.
If I didn’t see it written out, I might think someone was saying ‘[name_m]Al[/name_m]’. I know there is a difference between Owl and [name_m]Al[/name_m] but they sound very similar. I could see it as a cute family nickname for [name_m]Albert[/name_m] or [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] but I don’t like it as a name by itself.
Owls are my favorite animal but I wouldn’t name my kid owl. There are plenty of options if you look into the scientific names or names that mean owl that you don’t have to be so literal. I get what they were going for and it’s a nice reference, though I wouldn’t want it as my name.
I like owls, and I like the idea of it, but the sound of the word is one I don’t really love or would ever use on my child.
This exactly. I love owls, but the similarity to howl and oww would put me off, it’s just not a pleasant sounding word.
Maybe the word owl in another language is more pleasant sounding.
someone in that kids life at some point in time will follow him around making hoot sounds.
I can hear the teasing now.
[name_m]Hi[/name_m], I’m Owl
Who, who?
Some bird names work and some just don’t. This bird has flown into the latter group.
