So I’ve always liked [name]Patrick[/name], but mainly as a middle name ([name]Samuel[/name] [name]Patrick[/name], [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Patrick[/name]) but I’ve been liking it more and more as a first name. I’m a bit hesitant to move it though for a few reasons.
I’m not Irish in any way, would it be weird to use an Irish name if I’ve no heritage?
[name]How[/name] inevitable is it that he’ll be nicknamed [name]Pat[/name] at some point in his life? I see it as a girly nickname as all the [name]Pats[/name] I know/of are [name]Patricia[/name] nn [name]Pat[/name].
What other nicknames, besides [name]Paddy[/name] and [name]Ricky[/name], can you come up with? I like both but don’t love either.
I like [name]Patrick[/name] a lot! I wouldn’t be concerned–at least here, [name]Patrick[/name] is considered more classic, I mean it’s Irish, but very usable for any nationality. I’ve known several Patricks, and there’s only one that I know for sure that had Irish ancestry. [name]Pat[/name] is what worried me, too, haha. I don’t like [name]Pat[/name] at all, but I figured if he needed a nn I could use [name]Pax[/name], which I think is super awesome. I love that it means “peace”, too. I’ve also heard Trick for [name]Patrick[/name], which I think is cool, but not really my style. I do like [name]Paddy[/name], too, though.
I don’t really think of it as an Irish name. It has had such widespread use that it’s more of a general nondescript heritage name. So, I wouldn’t see an issue at all with a person without Irish heritage using it.
That’s funny. I’m a [name]Patricia[/name] and all the [name]Pats[/name] I know are Patricks. I’ve always been [name]Pia[/name].
I don’t really know any “legitimate” nicknames outside of [name]Pat[/name], [name]Paddy[/name], and [name]Ricky[/name] for [name]Patrick[/name]. I do know a [name]Patrick[/name] who has the nickname [name]Trip[/name]. [name]Kinda[/name]’ random, but I guess it has the letters.
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Patrick[/name], and i think it’s totally usable on anyone. If you wanted to spell it [name]Padraig[/name] it would be kind of weird, but at this point its what you could call a mainstream ethnic name. if [name]Kevin[/name] and [name]Connor[/name] are ok on non-Irish kids, so is [name]Patrick[/name].
I read a book where a character named [name]Patrick[/name] was nicknamed Patch, i always thought that was really cute.
[name]Patrick[/name] is on my short list and I love it. I am very worried about the nickname aspect but the trend seems to to call by full names and hopefully everyone will follow my lead if that is all we call him.
I dont think you have to be Irish to have a [name]Patrick[/name], we are becoming such a melting pot. If we use the name my son will be [name]Patrick[/name] [name]Anthony[/name] [name]Friedman[/name] – a nice Irish/Italian/Jewish (with some French and Native American mixed in) boy being raised Catholic!
PS I also think it sounds refreshing in the sea of [name]Aidan[/name]'s and [name]Liam[/name]'s in the US and so many of them are definitely not Irish.
You can totally use [name]Patrick[/name], I knew a [name]Patrick[/name] in HS who wasn’t Irish…at least I don’t think so, his mom was white, but his dad was black, so maybe his mother was, but I highly doubt it, and no one else certainly thought so.
You can use just [name]Rick[/name]/[name]Ric[/name], or [name]Tre[/name] ([name]Tri[/name] —> [name]Tre[/name])
I love [name]Patrick[/name]! I wanted to use it for our son, but my DH was so afraid he would be called [name]Pat[/name], that we used [name]Patrick[/name] in the middle.
I know of two Patricks - one age 15 and one age 8 - both go by [name]Patrick[/name] only - no nn.
[name]Patrick[/name] stands well on its own, however, if you desperately want a nickname, I’d suggest Trick/[name]Trix[/name]. My cousin [name]Patrick[/name] went by this through school and it still works for him. Other cute ones for a little [name]Patrick[/name] is Patch. What about [name]Rico[/name]? [name]Just[/name] some random suggestions to mull over
I strongly dislike the name [name]Patrick[/name]. It is soooo common where I live (not everybody is Irish either, mostly French actually). [name]Every[/name] single [name]Patrick[/name] I have ever met (probably over 15 of them) goes by [name]Pat[/name] as a nn. So do the [name]Patricia[/name]'s I know too. That makes a lot of [name]Pats[/name]!
I love patrick! My son is [name]Josef[/name] [name]Patrick[/name] [name]James[/name]… but now that we are TTC with a second I really wish I had saved [name]Patrick[/name] in case we have another boy!!!
I think [name]Paddy[/name] or Trick is neat for a nn.
I love [name]Patrick[/name] at a whole but I would never use it because I cannot stand nn [name]Pat[/name]. I think Patch is really cute though. It sounds more of a childs nn now, but as he grows his nn wll likely grow with him. I know a grown man that goes by [name]Chip[/name]…his real name is [name]Sidney[/name]…and my dad just turned 50 but the majority of people still call him [name]Bobby[/name] (his name is [name]Robert[/name]).
