We are struggling with naming girl #2. Our four-year-old is [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_u]Lindsey[/name_u] (shes’s Usually called [name_u]Penny[/name_u]). Agreeing on her little sister has been difficult.
My favorite: [name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
My husband jokingly sings “[name_f]Lydia[/name_f] the tattooed baby” like the [name_m]Marx[/name_m] Bros. song “[name_f]Lydia[/name_f] the Tattooed Lady” every time I bring it up, he doesn’t take it seriously.
Husband’s favorite: [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]
I dislike the demon folklore meaning of the name. There’s a story about her being [name_m]Adam[/name_m]’s first wife before [name_f]Eve[/name_f], cast out of [name_u]Eden[/name_u] for refusing to obey him. She’s been demonized by the church, folklore, often the name of vampires and other negative supernatural beings.
Other names discussed:
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] ([name_f]Winnie[/name_f])
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_f]Zelda[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] or [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]
My first thought was [name_f]Lilia[/name_f], which is a Latin name for lily and is actually a pretty cute combo of [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]. Also, [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] & [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] sounds adorable to me!!
I myself am not a big fan of [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] and although [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] does sound cute, I always jump back to the whole demon thing.
My first thought was also [name_f]Lilia[/name_f]! Sounds like [name_f]Lilith[/name_f], [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], and [name_f]Lily[/name_f], all on your list. My favorite from your list is [name_f]Winifred[/name_f]. [name_u]Penny[/name_u] and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] is just too cute. I like [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] as well
I wouldn’t worry too much about the meaning of [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]. It’s a beautiful name that I really love, and it isn’t like every person baby #2 encounters will immediately recall the less-than-ideal meaning. Then again, I’ve never been too hung up on name meanings, so that could just be me! My other favorites from your list are [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], [name_f]Greta[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], but I think [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] is the best sibset!
I like [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]! If I had to choose between [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] and [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], I’d go with [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], mainly because of the demon.
My choice would be [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]. And…instead of [name_f]Lillith[/name_f]…[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] or [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]? [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] is so beautiful!
I feel [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] is too old school. I have a neighbor in her mid 70’s named [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] as well as a great aunt about 70 …so maybe that’s why I associate it with an older crowd. Also [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] and [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] give me that vibe.
Some other great sibs for a beautiful name like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] are:
Between [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilith[/name_f], I like [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] better with [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. I do like [name_u]Penny[/name_u] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] as sisters though. While I like the suggestion of [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], I’d love to see [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] with [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. From your other suggestions, I really like [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] too.
I think [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] or [name_f]Lily[/name_f] go best with [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] nn [name_u]Penny[/name_u]. Also love another poster’s suggestion of [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] for you!
You have a great list. I like [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] and have never heard that song. I think it’s a feminine classic. I guess my first association is the sister in Pride and Prejudice. I think [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] is OK unless you are religious. I think of [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] Fair. With [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] I love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f].
Maybe:
[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]
[name_f]Junia[/name_f]
[name_f]Juno[/name_f]
[name_f]Liliana[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Luciana[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lula[/name_f]
[name_f]Winona[/name_f] nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]
[name_f]Zoe[/name_f]
I like [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] with [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. I also really like the suggestions of [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] and [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]. I would also suggest:
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] nn [name_f]Bea[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] nn [name_f]Dottie[/name_f]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Miranda[/name_f]
While [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] doesn’t make me think of the [name_m]Marx[/name_m] Bros. song, it does make me think of the [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] sister from Pride & Prejudice, who wasn’t the nicest character. I’m not religious, so I have no objections to [name_f]Lilith[/name_f].
W/[name_f]Penelope[/name_f], I like a longer name, so as much as I like [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], it seems short next to [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. Maybe…& apologies for repeats:
I like the name [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] and think of her as more of a feminist hero
But if it concerns you I think [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] or [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lila[/name_f] or [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lily[/name_f] would be darling with [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] nn [name_u]Penny[/name_u]
Of your options so far, I like [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f]/[name_f]Lillian[/name_f], and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]/[name_f]Lucille[/name_f]. I’m personally not a fan of the name [name_f]Winifred[/name_f], but I do think [name_u]Penny[/name_u] and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] would be adorable sister names!
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] is the only one I’d specifically avoid as it’s very matchy with [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. If you want to stick to Greek, ends-in-E names, I rather like [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] with [name_f]Penelope[/name_f].
I also love the suggestion of [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f], and I think [name_f]Wendy[/name_f] would be a cute nickname!
Well you both like similar names!
I prefer [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] but you definitely have bad associations.
Maybe other Li names;
[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]
[name_f]Lillias[/name_f] - fav for you!
[name_f]Linnea[/name_f]
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f]
I like all your other names! Special mention to [name_f]Greta[/name_f] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
From your list I really like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] / [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], you could even go with [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] and call her [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]? I also like [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] and agree that [name_u]Penny[/name_u] and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] would be very cute! And [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] also sounds really cute and could also be called [name_f]Lily[/name_f]?
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilian[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucia[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Viola[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Sarai[/name_f]
My favourites from your list are [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]. I love the name [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] but I agree with you that the meaning is offputting.
We considered [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] for our daughter. She ended up being [name_f]Violet[/name_f] which I think is similar in style. If we were to have another daughter, she would also probably be [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] or [name_f]Penelope[/name_f].
I really love your list!
Out of [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] I think [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] goes better with [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]! I do understand why the demon association of [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] turns you off. I also agree that [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] would be the perfect compromise. or spelled [name_f]Liliah[/name_f]?
Of your list I love [name_f]Winnifred[/name_f] nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] that’s so cute with [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]! Also [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]/[name_f]Lucy[/name_f].
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] gives me such greek name vibes so maybe another name of greek origin might be good? especially if longer with cute nicknames! they might not be your style though, & sorry for any repeats!
how about:
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] ([name_u]Ari[/name_u])
[name_f]Callista[/name_f] ([name_f]Callie[/name_f])
[name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] ([name_f]Cassie[/name_f])
[name_u]Damaris[/name_u] ([name_f]Mary[/name_f])
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Demetria[/name_f] ([name_f]Demi[/name_f])
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] ([name_f]Dodie[/name_f])
[name_f]Eulalia[/name_f] (Eulie, [name_f]Eula[/name_f], or Laylie)
[name_f]Eliana[/name_f] ([name_f]Ellie[/name_f])
[name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] (Hya)
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f]
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f] (i’ve always loved the nickname Panda)
[name_f]Phaedra[/name_f] (then you can use “[name_f]Fay[/name_f]” as a nickname)
[name_f]Zoey[/name_f]
