[name_f]My[/name_f] guilty pleasure list is big, but the name that keeps coming up is the name [name_f]Peony[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]. Is [name_f]Peony[/name_f] really worth taking off the GP list and adding to the list of names worth while to consider as a first name ? Thoughts? Would you like to meet a little [name_f]Peony[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] in person or not?
I do love it and peonies are my favorite flower. I would love to meet a [name_f]Peony[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] in person! I’ve actually been thinking about the name [name_f]Peony[/name_f] and was struggling with this myself. It sounds so sweet as a name. I think you should take it off the guilty pleasure list! Go for it!
Thank you for your insight. Peonies and Hydrangeas are my favorite flowers too, but I couldn’t picture a hydrangea. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband suggested [name_f]Peony[/name_f] and and stuck with me. The names sounds so sweet and elegant to my ears!
The two other “Normal” names under consideration are [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] and [name_f]Nanette[/name_f]. [name_m]Both[/name_m] are from women whom affected my life significantly. [name_f]Nanette[/name_f] is an Alternative to [name_f]Nancy[/name_f] and [name_f]Ann[/name_f], which is a diminutive for [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] and in Hebrew means grace. The feedback on [name_f]Nanette[/name_f] hasn’t been positive nor [name_f]Virginia[/name_f]. However, with [name_f]Peony[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f], [name_f]Anne[/name_f] being in the middle would allow me to honor one of the women while having a Gp name that both my husband and I adore. It seems to be the best solution and everything seems to fit into place.
Sorry Vespertine, I think [name_f]Peony[/name_f] is perpetually ill suited to be a girls name no matter how lovely the flowers. I can’t imagine anyone under the age of twenty taking someone named [name_f]Peony[/name_f] seriously. It just doesn’t seem a proper sound for a name.
I actually love the name [name_f]Peony[/name_f]! It’s so fresh compared to beautiful but a bit overused [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], and even [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]… I was also thinking about Hydrangea because of the sweet image, but if I use Hydrangea, it will probably be in the middle, just like [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f], another long floral name I love (I have a list of eccentric floral names on nb!). [name_f]Peony[/name_f] is like [name_f]Azalea[/name_f], [name_f]Begonia[/name_f], and [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f] because it is easily accessible, meaning [name_f]Peony[/name_f] is more a person-name than Hydrangea will ever be. [name_f]Peony[/name_f] is unexpected and unusual but can easily be pronounced, which is usually the issue with underused names. Peonies are so soft and delicate but a little overpowering. There are definitely qualities in a peony that are aspirational characteristics. You should go for! Not quite sure about the [name_f]Anne[/name_f]… sort of feels like I’m gnawing at something when I say the name [name_f]Peony[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]. Other than that, love the name and move it over to your useable name list! It’s worth it!
[name_u]Love[/name_u] it, more substantial to me than [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] or [name_u]Piper[/name_u] but in the same vain. Not as overused as [name_f]Rose[/name_f], and [name_f]Lily[/name_f] but just as legit! I’d love to meet a [name_f]Peony[/name_f].
Thank you for you thoughts, I have consider a very BIG multiple-middle name option instead of [name_f]Anne[/name_f], it really oozes lavishness and femininity. Tell me your thoughts?
[name_f]Peony[/name_f] Esclarmonde [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Leonie[/name_f]. [name_m]Both[/name_m] my dh and I have french in us, Esclarmonde and [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] honor it, and [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] stands for lion which was my mother’s surname before her adoption. But I love the meaning attached to [name_f]Anne[/name_f], but it does come across rather plain [name_f]Jane[/name_f] maybe even incomplete?.
I would definitely feel quite sorry for a girl with the name of [name_f]Peony[/name_f]. There is still horrible ways of bullying in school and I could only feel this child’s name would be the brunt of many cruel jokes. I love peonies and Hydrangeas, but not in a name!
I had never thought of [name_f]Peony[/name_f] as a person’s name until I came across a blogger named [name_f]Peony[/name_f] [name_m]Lim[/name_m]. I think [name_f]Peony[/name_f] is such a pretty name. If we can use [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] and [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] as first names why not [name_f]Peony[/name_f]? I’d love to meet a [name_f]Peony[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f].
This 100%. Most flower names give off the same vibe to me, so I don’t understand why [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is seen as normal and attractive while [name_f]Peony[/name_f] is considered weird. [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] has similar teasing potential, but is used.
vespertinerose, I actually new a woman named [name_f]Nanette[/name_f], so I think it’s a great name. I just wanted to mention it because I saw the name and it made me smile
I think it is a lovely name, but I think teasing potential (pee on me? Sorry) is too high. I love unusual names too, I’m just going off the first thing that my little sister said when I first mentioned this name to her, about a year ago. It is still gorgeous, and kids can find a way to tease someone for their name no matter what, but I just thought I would give you a heads up.
I like it, but only as middle or a character name. It’s definitely a guilty pleasure which would be hard to wear as a professional. She also might get pee-pee jokes at school.
I can’t see it working on anyone past the age of 5 to be honest.
I love it! [name_f]Peony[/name_f]'s a special one for me, so I’d like to think I could use it, but, you may want to look over my thread about it from [name_u]January[/name_u]. https://nameberry.com/nametalk/threads/144593-Peony
I’d love to use it, but I think I’ve been talked out of it haha.
I think [name_f]Peony[/name_f] fits in with the old-fashioned floral and nickname-names popular in [name_f]England[/name_f] right now! It might elicit some nonsensical childhood teasing with “pee” as the first syllable (I’m talking about when kids are really little) but… kids can do that with any name.
I’ve started to love [name_f]Anne[/name_f] as a middle name. It sounded really “generic filler name” for a long time, but it doesn’t get used as much in the middle these days so it sounds quaint and, well, nice. Your longer [name_m]French[/name_m] middles were pretty but it almost feels like gilding the lily. [name_f]Peony[/name_f] is pretty because it’s so simple and direct and [name_f]Anne[/name_f] is great with it.
FWIW, I like [name_f]Nanette[/name_f] and [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] too. [name_f]Nanette[/name_f] isn’t my first-choice [name_f]Anne[/name_f] diminutive - I actually really like [name_f]Nancy[/name_f] - but it’s cute.
I do agree that [name_f]Peony[/name_f] is a beautiful flower but honestly, I think you would just be asking for your little girl to get teased :(. I am often one to say “Hey, any name has teasing potential! Kids can make something up about anything.” But [name_f]Peony[/name_f] just makes it too easy.
I love [name_f]Peony[/name_f], I think it’s really pretty and she would definitely fit in with all the other flower names, [name_f]Peony[/name_f] is no different to calling your child [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] or [name_f]Lily[/name_f] or [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], but it is still unusual and fun. I can imagine it on a person of all ages and I really think it needs to be used by more people.
I adore [name_f]Peony[/name_f]!!
[name_f]Peony[/name_f] is such a delicate, fragrant & luscious floral that symbolizes romance, a happy marriage, fecundity, prosperity etc…it would make a very pretty & feminine first name. And [name_f]Anne[/name_f] is nice too, though plain in comparison.
Cheers
[name_m]How[/name_m] are you saying it? I’m from the south, and I’ve always heard P Oh Nee. On here, I’ve seen it as PE uh nee. Regardless, while the flower is floral perfection, I can’t get behind it as a name. I also agree with PP, it sounds close to Pee on me or pee on knee.
Also, I love [name_f]Nanette[/name_f], and I have [name_f]Nanetta[/name_f] in my signature for a very similar reason to you (my mother’s name is [name_f]Ann[/name_f]). I also called my grandma [name_f]Nana[/name_f], but in my particular area, the vast majority of people call their grandma just that, and [name_f]Nancy[/name_f] is perfectly acceptable, so I think it would work beautifully. I don’t think [name_f]Peony[/name_f] is a viable option, though it is very pretty, but perhaps you could consider Paeonia? It is the scientific name for peony’s, and whilst it might not be your style, I just thought I would mention it.
Paeonia is pronounced py-OWN-nee-uh, which would eliminate the obvious teasing potential.
