Peregrin?

Would it be absolutely ridiculous to use [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m] with a big sister named [name_f]Arwen[/name_f]? I feel like most people won’t make the connection between them. I mean the majority of people do not recognize where [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] alone came from. Is it still weird?

At first I thought that most people will make the connection, but I’m not so sure anymore, especially since [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m] is mostly referred to as [name_u]Pippin[/name_u].
Either way I don’t think it’s absolutely ridiculous. Maybe not ideal, but merely appearing in the same work shouldn’t rule sibling names out completely. It might be different a) if the names only existed inside that universe, but peregrine is a real word and [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] is a real Welsh name or b) if they were siblings, lovers or enemies in the story.
Also, if I understand correctly they wouldn’t be the only siblings, so that would also help.

Yes, there are other siblings, [name_m]Benton[/name_m] and [name_u]Raven[/name_u]. Does [name_u]Raven[/name_u] also being a bird make it that much more awkward? lol [name_m]Benton[/name_m], [name_f]Arwen[/name_f], [name_u]Raven[/name_u] and [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m].

Is it?

I’ve not read LOTR, so I didn’t know there was a [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m], but it would be a bit odd. Either way, I’d spell it [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u].

At least it says so on its Nameberry page :person_shrugging:

There’s definitely some debate about whether [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] is a legit Welsh name or just a name made up by [name_m]Tolkien[/name_m] to appear Welsh.

I’ve never read or watched the LotR and I would know that both of these names were used in that? Is that because I’m into names? Maybe. But I wouldn’t know what relation the two characters had to each other.

A thought I’d never have but my husband pointed out: He’d read favoritism into that because [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] is an all-positive character while [name_u]Pippin[/name_u] is unimportant and annoying (his opinion not mine don’t @ me)

Yeah, I don’t agree with your husband’s assessment at all. [name_m]Faramir[/name_m] would have died had it not been for [name_u]Pippin[/name_u]. I think he’s a great example of an annoying youngster growing up and acquiring wisdom. But that’s ok! I can see how he could think that. I honestly kinda feel the opposite. [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] is such a minor character while [name_u]Pippin[/name_u] is throughout the books. I would have loved to have named her [name_f]Galadriel[/name_f], but [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] is more wearable in real life. lol

I don’t think it’s ridiculous but I would immediately assume you are both big LOTR fans. (Not a bad thing)
Something to consider is that it’s probably inevitable that there’s another remake at some point. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if the franchise seems to have died down for a while I’m sure it will be back.

Ahhh see it took me a second to make the [name_m]Lord[/name_m] of the Rings connection because I actually forgot that Pippin’s full name is [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m]. I think the connection is not too obvious, I think most people will not get it especially the younger they are. I see no reason not to go for it, if it remains a worry perhaps choose the [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u] spelling over [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m] & perhaps steer clear of the nickname [name_u]Pip[/name_u] or [name_u]Pippin[/name_u] (because that is a smack in the face it’s so obvious) I would pick something like Grin instead.

I love [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m], with or without the E! I have a friend who used it and calls her son [name_u]Pippin[/name_u] (says she intended a different nn but he was just a Pippin.)
I don’t think it’s ridiculous. I believe my private thought might be, on meeting this set, “Oh, that kinda leaves [name_m]Benton[/name_m] out!” because [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m] have the LotR connection, and [name_u]Raven[/name_u] and [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m] have the bird connection. They do all have the N-ending you’ve mentioned before, though.

I read LOTR a loong time ago and would not make the connection. If anything I would assume a Welsh connection as [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] just sounds like a Welsh name to me. You/your kids will obviously encounter lots of people who don’t know LOTR. Also obviously your kids will have these names their whole lives and won’t always introduce themselves as a sibling set! So I think you should definitely make sure you like the name [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u] on its own terms and don’t require others to get the LOTR reference. Fwiw I love [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u] - I think of the bird, and the romantic meaning (traveller in Latin). I like the nickname [name_u]Perry[/name_u]. However in the UK the name [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u] sounds very stereotypically aristocratic
and my husband ruled it out for our son on the basis he thought it sounded pretentious. I still really like it but just a thought about connections some people might make. There is also an old character called [name_u]Perry[/name_u] (Peregrine) [name_u]Mason[/name_u] which people of a certain age will associate with the name.
