Peridot!

We’re thinking of [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] (Hubby and his late father’s gemstone). I think it’s spunky and has cute nick name options ([name_u]Perry[/name_u], [name_f]Dottie[/name_f], [name_f]Dot[/name_f]). We pronounce it perry-dot. Though I hear some pronounce it perry-doe.

What do you think of [name_f]Peridot[/name_f]? And how would you pronounce it?

I have always pronounced [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] as perry-doe.

Not a name I would use, but I do like [name_u]Perry[/name_u] & [name_f]Dot[/name_f].

I pronounce the gem as pear-uh-dough. Since there are so many different pronunciations that are argued to be the correct one, I don’t know if this works well as a first name.

I also pronounce it as [name_m]Per[/name_m]-ih-doe. If you don’t mind pronunciation discrepancies, then I don’t think it’s a bad name at all.

[name_m]Man[/name_m], I guess the doe ending is more common than I thought. I wonder how our families and extended families pronounce it. It’s not like the word [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] is regularly said in conversation, so I really have no idea, ha. I can see it being awkward. Though I still love this name.

I would have pronounced it [name_u]Perry[/name_u]-dot too (though I really like the [name_m]Per[/name_m]-ih-doe pronunciation!) I think it’s a lovely name - It’s adorable and you’re definitely right about the brilliant nicknames, no matter what pronunciation you use

To my knowledge, [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] is always pronounced as per-ee-doh. I would personally save it for the middle spot because of the potential pronunciation issues.

I would pronounce it perry-dot. I usually don’t like it as it is my birthstone but the significance of it in your family is lovely. I think it really suits your description.

I say perry-doe. Never heard it said any other way.

I thought it was pear uh dot.

This is an interesting article

Seems there is no right and wrong way to pronounce it. unfourtantly having a name with multiple pronunciations can be such a headache. I’ve asked a few friends, they all also say perra-dot which makes me feel better.

My sister’s birth stone is a [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] as well. My family had always pronounced it with ‘doe’ on the end instead of ‘dot’. I always then assumed this was the correct pronunciation, so that’s how I’d pronounce it.

Any one else want to chime in?

I’ve never heard it pronounced any way other than [name_m]Per[/name_m]-uh-doe / [name_u]Perry[/name_u]-doe, so I’d save it for the middle spot if you’re set on using it.

[name_f]Peridot[/name_f] is a current character on the children’s cartoon [name_m]Steven[/name_m] Universe. They pronounce it per-ih-dot, so the kids watching it are going to get used to that pronunciation, which might make it more common. It’s a really cute name, but if you end up using the per-ih-doh pronunciation, you and your child might have to endure other people pronouncing the name phonetically with the hard T or spelling the name incorrectly because they don’t hear the T.

From my previous research into the correct pronunciation, both are considered right. Which means you can choose and it’s nobody’s business to argue. I’m assuming it started as a regional/dialectal difference, but both pronunciations are accepted.
I waver between the two depending on the flow with in a combo, but the possibility of [name_f]Dot[/name_f] tips it slightly in favour of the per-ih-doe pronunciation for me. I don’t like any of the traditional ways to get [name_f]Dot[/name_f].
[name_u]Perry[/name_u] is unappealing to me, but would totally go for Peanut or [name_u]Poe[/name_u] or [name_f]Dottie[/name_f].

I pronounce it PAIR-i-doe. I think it could work as it is similar to [name_f]Margot[/name_f] and other -o/-ow ending names. [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] with a more common middle would be perfect:)

I always thought it was PAIR-uh-doe.

Either way, the nicknames are cute.

I totally forgot about the kid’s cartoon [name_m]Steven[/name_m] Universe! I saw that when googling [name_f]Peridot[/name_f]. Maybe the other kids her age will think her name is cool if that show is still around then  good susgestions for it being placed in the middle, I do have a few name combos I’m toying with using [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] for the middle spot.

I always pronounced it Pair-a-[name_f]Dot[/name_f], but I do hear it with the [name_f]Doe[/name_f] ending often as well.
