Persephone?

I actually got hubby to discuss names with me a bit earlier and he surprised me with [name]Persephone[/name]. He’s really into Greek mythology and loves this name with the nickname Seph or Sephie. I don’t know, I just can’t get into it. I like that it is soft sounding and rolls off the tongue quite nicely and the nn’s possibilities aren’t bad, but something about it seems unusable to me. Is it just me? I know here on Nameberry it is a very well-liked name but I’ve never in my lifetime met a Persophone. So what do you all think? Is it too much name? [name]Do[/name] you think there is teasing potential? Would you personally use it? Please be brutally honest. Thanks

I think it’s awesome. I would absolutely name my daughter after the queen of the underworld (resident mythology experts, I apologize if that’s inaccurate). It’s a gorgeous name with great connotations and nickname possibilities. I say go for it.

To be brutally honest, I really dislike it. No, I am not afraid of using such highly unusual names but [name]Persephone[/name] just isn’t appealing in my opinion. It is so long and a bit mouthful, contains the word “phone”, may be difficult to pronounce for somebody and sounds strange to my ears. I also don’t like Seph or [name]Percy[/name] for nickname. [name]Persephone[/name] is not my thing at all and I wouldn’t use it. I much prefer [name]Hermione[/name] or [name]Penelope[/name].

I wish I could get on board with it, because I love [name]Penelope[/name] and like [name]Phoebe[/name], but I just don’t care for it. Granted, I have fairly conservative/classic naming taste, but it just feels like a bit too much for me. Plus it may be hard to avoid the nn [name]Percy[/name]. A lot of the Greek mythology names, while definitely cool, are too bold for my taste.

[name]Persephone[/name] isn’t any more or less wearable than [name]Penelope[/name]. I think [name]Persephone[/name] is a pretty, unusual choice. It may not be my style, but I’d love to see it on someone else’s daughter.

I would definitely use [name]Persephone[/name] for my daughter! Its a stunning name!! I think there is potential to be teased in every name so I wouldn’t worry to much about it. Although I would use [name]Percy[/name] as a nn ,all the are actually really cute!

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Persephone[/name] and the nicknames associated with it. I did have it on my list until I found out it meant ‘bringer of death’. Apart from that, its perfecto!

I love [name]Persephone[/name] and would totally use it one day if SO was on board. While I also prefer the nn [name]Percy[/name], Seph or Sephie are also cute.

Exquisite name! [name]Peri[/name] is another nn option.

I do think it’s pretty, but my main problem with it is that people will mispronounce it purse-a-phone rather than pur-seph-uh-knee

For nn’s I like just [name]Penny[/name]

I think [name]Persephone[/name] is a lovely name! I like the nicknames Sephie, [name]Percy[/name], [name]Posey[/name], [name]Poppy[/name], & Fi([name]FiFi[/name]). I would definitely use it in real life.

I think it’s beautiful - but that is why my cat is called [name]Persephone[/name]… (the other one is called [name]Antigone[/name]). Sephy and Tiggy for short.

No-one can [name]EVER[/name] pronounce their names correctly unless they have a degree-level education, and sometimes not even then, so I can imagine that for a child it would be a real pain constantly correcting people.

So I can see your husband’s point of view in that it’s beautiful and lovely, but equally sympathise with you not wanting to use it.

I adore [name]Persephone[/name]. It’s actually one of the names on my list ([name]Persephone[/name] [name]Kate[/name]). If you don’t want to call her [name]Persephone[/name], how about Sephie, or even [name]Sophie[/name]? Persy, [name]Honey[/name], or [name]Ursy[/name] would work too. [name]Just[/name] some suggestions. Good luck!

I love [name]Persephone[/name]. I once met a [name]Persephone[/name] who was in her late 30’s/40’s. This was about 5 years ago. She seemed to like her name and was happy that I could pronounce it.

I find it quite pretty, and is one of the few mythology names I like, the others being [name]Echo[/name] and [name]Daphne[/name]. I love it’s soft syllables and just the overall feel of the name. I honestly think that pronunciation wouldn’t be a huge deal since her story is more well known than other myths, and in my area, at some point of middle school or high school, we all have a unit of mythology in English class. In the case that people do mispronounce her name, it’s not a big deal to correct them.

I actually know a [name]Persephone[/name]. She is a very spunky vivacious little girl. It certainly is a unique name, you may not be able to. Buy per made items with that name, but if that doesn’t bother you I say go for it. Good luck to you and your hubby.

Not a fan.

I really like it as an alternative to [name]Penelope[/name]!

Greek Mythology is more popular than it has ever been. Currently, in my state Greek mythology is a major part of the language arts curriculum in middle school. Movies and books based off the stories are in demand (Clash of the Titans, [name]Percy[/name] [name]Jackson[/name] and many myth books for children). Since [name]Persephone[/name]'s story is well known, most teachers should be able to pronounce her name right (kids might have problems, but a nickname makes this so much easier).

[name]Persephone[/name] is a great, unusual alternative to [name]Stephanie[/name] and [name]Penelope[/name]. [name]Persephone[/name] also comes with a wide range of unusual nicknames, like Seph/Sephie, [name]Peri[/name]/[name]Perri[/name], [name]Percy[/name]/Persey, Fi, Seffa, [name]Posey[/name] and [name]Poppy[/name].

I love [name]Persephone[/name]…for its sound, history and pretty look…

However, the only thing I have against it is its myth. Now I am in no way an expert on Greek myths so feel free to correct me but [name]Persephone[/name] was kidnapped and forced to marry Hades. Some sources I have read have gone so far as to say Hades raped [name]Persephone[/name]…

That I have a hard time with. [name]How[/name] would I explain to my eight year old my reasoning to name her after a mythological figure who was kidnapped and forced to marry against her will (and possibly raped)? I truly understand the appeal of the sound but the myth just makes it difficult to use (in my opinion). I’m sure there are more (more child friendly) myths about [name]Persephone[/name] but that is the best known one…

I love it too much to drop it completely though, so I may still use it for a middle name.
