Peter

Thoughts on Peter? It’s a family name (but through another language variation) and we like that it’s solid with history, but not too common. We don’t love the nn Pete, but I don’t think Peter really needs a nickname anyhow.

If not Peter, any suggestions for solid, works in many languages, not too popular?

Oh, [name_m]Peter[/name_m] is wonderful! So underused and doesn’t get enough appreciation. It was on our list, too (we went a different direction, but I would love to have a grandson named [name_m]Peter[/name_m] someday!).

Peter is my #1 boy name right now! It is so classic and lovely! I think Pete is definitely avoidable. I would put Philip, Dominic, Cedric, Leon, Edward, and Frederick in the same category.

Peter is on my list as well… I love it, but I’m not sure if I will get to use it.

Pete is definitely avoidable, while little one is young.

Example 1

I have a friend named Peter who puts _____ Pete on his business card (name of his company), but he primarily gets called Peter. He just thought that _____ Peter didn’t sound quite right. He almost always goes by Peter unless someone is reading his business card or truck.

Example 2

There was also a neighbour who went by Peter 100% of the time and still does. He has never gone by Pete and people get corrected to that fact quickly.

Example 3

I have a third friend who goes by Pete. He likes it so that is his choice. It’s what he goes by daily and I don’t think many people call him Peter anymore. He went exclusively by Peter through the 8th grade, but chose differently as he got older.

Example 4

My cousin and his then wife chose their daughter’s name as Elizabeth. Told everyone she would only be known as Elizabeth and never anything else, especially not Lizzie. She started school and was one of 4 Elizabeths in her class. She decided then and there she was going to be called Lizzie. Though today she is primarily called Lizzie, she also now answers to Elizabeth regularly as well.

I guess my point is that it’s a matter of choice. You can choose not to use Pete while little one is young, but eventually your little one will grow up and choose a preferred name for themselves. Some even choose their preferred name while in elementary school. And some will choose to go by one name personally and another name professionally. Even if you can’t stand Pete, you may have to prepare yourself for hearing it regularly down the road.

Such a handsome name with tons of great history that feels charming and sweet. [name_m]Peter[/name_m] is a wonderful choice and I really do not think [name_m]Pete[/name_m] needs to be used he can definitely just be [name_m]Peter[/name_m].

The only thing is that [name_m]Peter[/name_m] can be slang for penis.

I love the name [name_m]Peter[/name_m]! I also don’t find he really needs a nickname per se, and I think he works so well on so many boys. Feels gentle and warm whilst also spunky and powerful. Huge fan

[name_m]Peter[/name_m] is great. Charming, familiar and classic  I think [name_m]Pete[/name_m] is not inevitable, and [name_m]Peter[/name_m] is short and strong enough. I mean, [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_u]Alex[/name_u] or [name_m]Samuel[/name_m], [name_u]Sam[/name_u] are more obvious than [name_m]Peter[/name_m], [name_m]Pete[/name_m]

[name_f]My[/name_f] nephew is [name_m]Peter[/name_m] and he’s always been called [name_m]Peter[/name_m] (except when he was a toddler and we called him [name_m]Petey[/name_m] the Horrible lol).

I think it’s time to bring back the strong, classic names.

I really like [name_m]Peter[/name_m]! (though I’ll admit it’s largely because of [name_m]Peter[/name_m] Parker). I agree it doesn’t need a nickname.

I’ve always been huge for [name_m]Peter[/name_m], it’s such a strong, handsome name, and the NN [name_m]Pete[/name_m] is cute, but I prefer [name_m]Peter[/name_m] just on its own.

Funny enough, I did this very thing to my parents when I was young. I decided to go by a nickname that they really didn’t want. In the end, family called me by my first name - always - and friends called me by the nickname. As I grew up, I reverted back to exclusively using my full name. So I think we’d be fine with anything he decided to go by, since we could always just call him by [name_m]Peter[/name_m] at home

Thank you!

I’ve heard this too, but not often. I figure that [name_m]Peter[/name_m] is such a well-established name, that the slang hopefully won’t matter too much (then again, the slang definitely killed “Dick” as a nickname for Richard…

Thank you, everyone!! It’s very reassuring to hear all of the love for [name_m]Peter[/name_m]! Your sentiments mirror ours so well!
