I’m naming my son [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] - due in just a few weeks! So our name choice is out there now as I’ve had things personalized and I’m trying to call him by his name so I get used to it. I love [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_u]Reese[/name_u] as a combo but the name [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] itself has been a little foreign feeling to me so I’m trying to get used to it! Throughout my entire pregnancy I have loved it one day and been unsure about it the next. But its the one name my husband liked and its very versatile I feel. And I’m in love with [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_u]Reese[/name_u] with our last name.
But… friends and family keep bringing up [name_m]Pete[/name_m]’s Dragon, the Disney movie. I haven’t watched the movie in years so I am actually going to watch it right now. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband’s stepmother even got us an [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] dragon stuffed animal and a friend of mine brought the reference up as well. I just didn’t realize this movie was that popular? They already did the remake so I feel like its not a reference that will continually come up - but yet it does? Again, I remember loving the moving as a kid but I haven’t watched it in years so rewatching today to see how I feel about it! But should this association bother me about my name choice? Its just a little odd to me that people’s first thought is a fictional dragon when they learn my son’s name. And doesn’t help that I’m still trying to get comfortable with our name choice! Im just a little annoyed! But I know every name has some association and I’m pretty sure this is a good one even though a bit odd. I enjoy Disney stuff but I’m not a fanatic about it like I guess a lot of others are! Would this bother you?
I’ve never even heard of the movie. People are probably just excited that they can buy something that has a specific relation to the baby, like people always get my friend [name_f]Michayla[/name_f] [name_u]Micky[/name_u] Mouse stuff because that’s her nickname. [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] is a fantastic name, and common enough that even if that movie is super popular and I somehow missed it, it’s not like that’s most people’s automatic association (unlike, say, [name_f]Cersei[/name_f] in GoT or something).
Elliot is an amazing choice, don’t let this discourage you!
Elliot is great, and I don’t think the association is too much. The movie wasn’t really that popular, and by the time little [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] is going to school no one close to his age will have much of an association with it. I also think that once [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] is born, everyone will just associate the name with him because he will be in the world and a lot more relevant than some movie
I agree with other posters, the movie isn’t a bad association. This could be an age thing, but when I think of children’s movies that have a character named [name_u]Elliot[/name_u], I think of E.T. Either way, both Elliots are kind and speak up for others. DH and I both have families that are very pop culture oriented and I can imagine them trying to connect a baby name to reference they know. [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] [name_u]Reese[/name_u] is a wonderful name and I don’t think you have should worry.
I’ve seen the movie and I never thought of that when I read your combo. Given that the remake is relatively new I think all the references will fade out, even then the association isn’t that bad since the story is really sweet.
I’ve never heard of the movie. And I guess when [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] is older, kids will be more interested in new movies.
If I were a kid I’d love having a name associated with something like that. It would be cool.
I don’t think [name_m]Pete[/name_m]’s Dragon is really that popular I think people just get desperate for ideas on how to relate to and welcome the baby lol. I’ve heard of the movie but I’ve never seen it or had other people really bring it up. I didn’t even know they made a remake.
Ok you guys make me feel better. Disney Plus keeps freezing on me so I wasn’t even able to even watch the movie but I am sure its a good association. I just find it really strange how many people have brought it up. I would have also thought ET would come up more too. It has come up a couple times but not as much as [name_m]Pete[/name_m]’s Dragon so that one hasn’t bothered me yet.
I didn’t think it was a very popular movie, I wouldn’t have made the association.
I don’t think you should let it put you off. When I first had my daughter [name_f]Olive[/name_f] a few people mentioned [name_f]Olive[/name_f] Oyl (popeyes girlfriend) which was kinda weird, but no one has since. I think its just a weird habit people have when they first hear a name haha
I remember seeing the movie as a child, and have NO recollection of that character’s name (and if it matters I’m usually pretty good with remembering names of people, real or fictional).
Honestly I’m the first to shy away from a name with an overly obvious media connection, but don’t think a ton of people are likely to make that connection. And even if they were, [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] is a well known enough name that I don’t think it’ll be a problem. Now if you were naming your kid [name_m]Frodo[/name_m] or something… (not picking on [name_m]Frodo[/name_m], just the first example of a name that couldn’t shake its tie to a movie!).
I love the name [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] and I think you’re good to go if that’s the only thing you’re worried about.
I remember your post that was fairly recent with the same concern.
Perhaps this is bothering you too much to commit to the name? Only you can answer that. Everyone has different comfort levels when it comes to associations.
I Honestly considered naming my first child after [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] the dragon. And she was a girl. It was my favourite movie as a child . [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] is not an unusual name and has many other references.
You could go [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] but then you would get like [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] wood or Vampire diaries
Or [name_u]Eli[/name_u] could be [name_u]Eli[/name_u] from Greys anatomy.
It doesn’t matter what name you choose someone will always make a connection to something else.
Well more people keep bringing it up and it kinda does make me take pause because I didnt think so many people would make this particular association. That is why I am asking again.
We are set in stone on using [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], thanks. But I feel like you should be aware of the associations a name has. As I mentioned I dont remember the movie, but glad to hear its a very sweet story.
I’m not like thrilled people keep making this association but its not a bad one. I agree - it reminds me of naming your daughter [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and people keep bringing up Pop Eye. Not bad characters but specific!
But as people have mentioned there is an association to every name so will it stop me from using the name at this point? Probably not. Husband really loves the name and we started calling the baby by name already. So it feels pretty well decided on at this point. Im just checking in with the world on any potential associations that could be problematic and yes it does kinda annoy me but this group has helped me to realize that [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] is well known beyond the one character people keep bringing up!
The first association that comes to my mind is a sweet boy named [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] that I grew up with. I wasn’t aware of the [name_m]Pete[/name_m]’s Dragon reference (though I think that’s an excellent association), and in time I might have connected the E.T. dots (also not a bad association).
I think that no matter what name you’ve chosen, people will make connections to things that are most familiar to them. Be that name [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], [name_u]Harry[/name_u], or [name_u]Robin[/name_u]. Once they’re charmed by your little [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] though, he’ll come to be the most prominent [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] in their memory.
This coming from a mother to [name_m]Bruce[/name_m]. [name_u]Lee[/name_u], [name_m]Wayne[/name_m], Springsteen. I get it!
