Philadelphia?

Never thought of it as a name before but saw it in the list of Greek names and I kind of like it! I have lots of personal connections to the city (the one in the US) so it would have meaning for me. What do you guys think? Nickname ideas? [name]Pippa[/name] maybe?

I’m not sure about it. [name]Philly[/name], Hila, [name]Delphi[/name], Phia, [name]Adelle[/name], Phidel…

I’m not in the camp that thinks ‘meaning’ trumps other factors. I think [name]Philadelphia[/name] is an awful mouthful for either a boy or a girl. Sorry.

I think it’s pretty but be wary as in the UK it’s the leading brand of soft spreading cheese…

It’s quite a mouthful, but not much more than [name]Philomena[/name] (which I do prefer). I think it can work. The cream cheese connection would make it an unfortunate choice for a chunky girl. I think if you don’t live near the city, cream cheese might come to mind for most people. Or the [name]Tom[/name] Hanks film, which I have never seen, but I know it has to do with AIDS. I do think there’s a lot of teasing potential.

My best friend lives in [name]Philly[/name] and it isn’t a very beautiful place imo. And it is generally a lot of things most people find questionable, high crime rates, a lot of empty buildings & storefronts, ect.

It could work though and of course, like most names, a beautiful & dynamic girl could pull it off wonderfully. Nicknames like [name]Pippa[/name], [name]Pip[/name], [name]Della[/name], [name]Dellie[/name], [name]Fifi[/name], [name]Philly[/name], ect are cute options.

I can’t help but want to say Pennsylvania after it… I don’t even think it would work as a middle, it’s just not a pretty name imo

I think [name]Philadelphia[/name] is ok, It’s a little heavy feeling though and already comes with all the associations people have of the city. Personally I would go with the shorter form [name]Delphia[/name]. That way you still have the connection to the city but not so blatantly as to bring all those other connections. And with it’s similarity to [name]Delphine[/name] it seems a more legit name rather than a place name.

I agree with the above poster who suggested [name]Delphia[/name].

I think [name]Philadelphia[/name] is much too much, and very awkward for a person’s name.

It’s on my ‘guilty pleasures’ list. I love the nickname opportunities ([name]Pip[/name], [name]Pippa[/name], [name]Delphi[/name], [name]Della[/name] etc.) and it makes me think of other people with long place names, like [name]Tennessee[/name] [name]Williams[/name], which I like. I don’t think I’d ever be brave enough to use it though. It might just be a bit too ‘out there’. And I doubt is use it in the middle, because then I wouldn’t be able to use the nicknames.

Maybe because I live an hour away from that city, but um… no. It’s not a name to me, it’s a place, and not even an attractive place (to actually visit OR the sound of it). I like the suggestion of [name]Delphia[/name].

I don’t think it works as a baby name [name]IRL[/name]. It reminds me too much of the place and cream cheese.

[name]Philadelphia[/name] was a fairly popular girl’s name in [name]Britain[/name] during the Georgian era, but I don’t think it’s very wearable today. Nearly everyone will think of the city. Maybe as a middle name if there’s significant meaning?

I grew up about an hour away from [name]Philadelphia[/name]. So no, I don’t find it usable at all. I recently read a book (okay, two thirds of a trilogy) where the father of the main character was so patriotic that he named all his children after states (it was back in the 1800s during the [name]Andrew[/name] [name]Jackson[/name] era, and it’s actually sort of cool in the book. Not so cute in real life, though)–[name]Maine[/name], [name]York[/name], [name]Carolina[/name], [name]Virginia[/name], Maryland “[name]Mary[/name]”, Pennsylvania “[name]Penny[/name]”, Massachusetts, [name]Tennessee[/name], [name]Georgia[/name]… I mean, [name]Philadelphia[/name] could be [name]Fia[/name], [name]Pippa[/name], or [name]Adele[/name], but would she really want to be [name]Philadelphia[/name]? I mean, there are some cool places in [name]Philadelphia[/name] to visit, and I don’t think I’d mind living there, but I definitely wouldn’t want it as a name! Plus, I think of the cream cheese, too. I do like the suggestions of [name]Delphine[/name] (or even [name]Delfina[/name], although I’m not crazy about just [name]Delphia[/name]) or [name]Philomena[/name], though.

Yep. [name]Philadelphia[/name] sounds ridiculous on a person, sorry. Also, it immediately brings to mind cream cheese, Phillies, Flyers, and [name]Will[/name] [name]Smith[/name] all rolled into one. I like the suggestions of [name]Delphia[/name] and [name]Delphine[/name].

Now that I think of it, I think [name]Daphne[/name] would be a nice alternative to [name]Philadelphia[/name], too…
