Philip vs Phillip

Which spelling do you prefer? And why?

[name_m]Phillip[/name_m]. It looks more complete. Although I do like [name_m]Philip[/name_m], as it’s the start of [name_f]Philippa[/name_f].

I prefer [name_m]Philip[/name_m], I think it looks cleaner.

I was going to say exactly this.

I definitely like [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] better. I both looks nicer and is the more popular spelling.

I honestly don’t know! I don’t care for the name so I think that affects my feelings about the spelling! I think I like the look of [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] more.

This is a question I’ve asked myself without a completely clear answer. I always assumed it was [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] when I was younger, but then when I discovered [name_m]Philip[/name_m] was a legit spelling, I’ve sort of come to prefer that I think. As someone else said, it looks “cleaner,” maybe more refined/elegant to me? But it’s a great name either way. And the [name_m]Duke[/name_m] of Edinburgh spells his name [name_m]Philip[/name_m] with one ‘L’ so I think that adds to its regal image for me!

[name_m]Philip[/name_m] is much nicer and the older spelling. [name_m]Both[/name_m] are pretty retro at this point but if one is going to come back I hope it’s [name_m]Philip[/name_m]. [name_f]My[/name_f] feelings on it are similar to my feelings for [name_m]Alan[/name_m] - I like [name_m]Alan[/name_m], can’t deal with [name_m]Allen[/name_m]/[name_m]Allan[/name_m].

[name_m]Philip[/name_m] is the first name. [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] with two l’s is a surname. I much prefer the one “l” spelling.

This is one of those names that I always feel like I’m spelling incorrectly, no matter how I write it, so I’m glad to know there is more than one legit spelling. :stuck_out_tongue: To make matters more complicated, the former captain of the [name_m]German[/name_m] national soccer team’s first name is spelled [name_m]Philipp[/name_m]. I still prefer the [name_m]Philip[/name_m] spelling as it looks simpler to me.

[name_m]Philip[/name_m]. But really, either works. [name_m]Both[/name_m] sound the same. I think it’s ready for a comeback!

I like [name_m]Philip[/name_m] more! [name_f]My[/name_f] reason might be a little silly but when I see it spelt with two L’s it gets confusing because the I’s can get mistaken for L’s, if that made any sense! I just think when there is only one L, it looks so much more readable and it makes so much more sense to me!

FYI - Not as complicated as you imagine. For English speakers, it’s [name_m]Philip[/name_m] or [name_m]Phillip[/name_m]. [name_m]Philipp[/name_m] with two p’s is the [name_m]German[/name_m] spelling of the name. Unless the poster lives in a [name_m]German[/name_m]-speaking country or wants to honour her [name_m]German[/name_m] heritage, this third option shouldn’t be an issue.

Really? That would make more sense. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you know where to find more info on that distinction?

[name_m]IRL[/name_m], I know a [name_m]Philip[/name_m] who often has his name misspelled and he sometimes specifies “one L.” But one time he got mail addressed to “[name_m]Phillip[/name_m] Jaunell lastname” – still I prefer the single L spelling if only for the reduction of straight lines in the middle of the name. [name_m]Philip[/name_m] just looks more rounded and easier to distinguish than [name_m]Phillip[/name_m].

Another vote for [name_m]Philip[/name_m]. I almost always prefer the “minimalist” spelling, and [name_m]Philip[/name_m] is no exception.

In my experience, more Americans seem to use [name_m]Phillip[/name_m], whereas more Brits/Europeans use [name_m]Philip[/name_m].

It’s one of those names that looks misspelled to me no matter what the spelling.

Can’t say I’ve heard that rule, but, learn something new every day I suppose

I know a vile [name_m]Phillip[/name_m], however, it’s the spelling I’m most familiar with. I prefer the [name_m]French[/name_m] [name_m]Philippe[/name_m] though

I initially want to say Philip as I know a Philippa so the spelling looks more correct to me, but I know a Phil who spells his name Phillip… so I’m unsure but I’ll say Phillip as it seems to be the more popular spelling.

I have an Uncle [name_m]Philip[/name_m] and my brother’s middle name is [name_m]Philip[/name_m]. [name_f]My[/name_f] mom and grandma saw [name_m]Philip[/name_m] is a first name and [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] is a surname. [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] is the first spot looks strange to me.

I definitely prefer [name_m]Philip[/name_m]. In all the combos I’ve considered with him in it, I’ve always preferred the [name_m]Philip[/name_m] spelling. Maybe because it seems less predictable, a little more spunky? I like that it also reminds me of international variants, like the [name_m]German[/name_m] [name_m]Philipp[/name_m] and the [name_m]French[/name_m] [name_m]Philippe[/name_m]. That, and there’s a company (at least around here) called [name_m]Phillips[/name_m], and so [name_m]Philip[/name_m] seems more like a name and less like the company, to me. I admit to really loving the [name_m]German[/name_m] [name_m]Philipp[/name_m] lately, though!
