Personally I love the name [name]Penelope[/name] but hate the name [name]Phoebe[/name]. I think [name]Penelope[/name] is beautiful but [name]Phoebe[/name] is just annoying (sorry if that offends anyone). But, i find that most people disagree with me. Everyone I know love [name]Phoebe[/name] a lot more…
So what do you think? [name]Phoebe[/name] or [name]Penelope[/name]?
[name]Phoebe[/name]! I adore [name]Phoebe[/name]. For some reason, [name]Penelope[/name] sounds slightly ridiculous to use on an actual person. I don’t know; it seems kind of cartoonish-- ‘puh nella pee’. Probably because I’ve never actually met someone named [name]Penelope[/name]… I bet if I did, my opinion would change.
I pretty much completely agree with you. I love the name [name]Penelope[/name] but find [name]Phoebe[/name] a little annoying.
[name]Penelope[/name] is fun, pretty, classic, and cute. While I love the name [name]Phoebe[/name] only because of the book Catcher in the [name]Rye[/name], I still am a little bothered by it. [name]Penelope[/name] is much better.
I find that I love them both equally. I find good AND bad qualities in both of them.
With [name]Phoebe[/name], I love its spunkiness and the possibility of the nn [name]Bee[/name]. When I hear it, I see intelligence and kindness. However, I also find it to be a bit “old lady-ish”. I’ve never heard of/met a [name]Phoebe[/name] that wasn’t over 60!
[name]Penelope[/name]…it’s beautiful. I love the mythology connections and the possibility of the nn’s [name]Nelle[/name]/[name]Poppy[/name]. It just sounds so elegant to me. On the other hand, I agree that I can’t really see it on a human child/person. I’ve never met one, and I’d be more likely to name a pet [name]Penelope[/name] than a daughter. I also have a great dislike for the nn [name]Penny[/name] (don’t like the sound at all), and that’s what a [name]Penelope[/name] is generally shortened to. People outside of this community don’t think of [name]Nelle[/name] or [name]Poppy[/name]. I am also really, really put off by the meaning of the name- “duck.” It bugs me so much that I could never, ever use this name. =(
[name]Penelope[/name]- hands down. I know a [name]Penelope[/name] (she goes by [name]Penny[/name]) and she is awesome. I met her when I was 18 and she was around 40, we were in a play together. She had two sons and always talked about how she was going to go home after rehearsal and have sex with her husband. But she talked about it in a very funny way, not a creepy way. She’s British. She’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever met and everyone loves her. I also think of [name]Penny[/name] from Lost and [name]Penny[/name] from Pee-wee’s Playhouse, haha. I know a lot of people on here don’t love [name]Penny[/name], but I love it a lot more than [name]Poppy[/name]. Though I do like [name]Polly[/name] as a nn for [name]Penelope[/name].
[name]Phoebe[/name] is cute, but it’s quite little-girlish to me. I think of The Catcher in the [name]Rye[/name], Mystic Pizza, and [name]Phoebe[/name] in Wonderland. The only adult [name]Phoebe[/name] I’ve seen is in Friends, and she wasn’t exactly adult-like. I do think it’s cute, but I don’t really like saying it “Feee-beee”, it also reminds me of Mr. [name]Feeney[/name] from Boy Meets World.
This is just the way I feel about [name]Penelope[/name] and I have felt like this for a very long time. I think it is an ugly name and the lope part reminds me of a wolf.
[name]Penny[/name] though is a lovely sweet name and very usable.
I think [name]Penelope[/name] is elegant, if a little over-the-top, and it could definitely work with a cute nickname. [name]Nelle[/name] and [name]Poppy[/name] are adorable, as emrasmus suggested, and I even like the more tame [name]Penny[/name].
I have never liked [name]Phoebe[/name] at all. It sounds and looks awkward and nerdy to me.
I agree with you. [name]Phoebe[/name] is a bit to much for my taste. Plus all I can think of is [name]Phoebe[/name] from Friends. [name]Penelope[/name] is not a personal favorite of mine, but it is a nice name and the nn [name]Penny[/name] makes it super cute.
I love the name [name]Penelope[/name]. I think it has a great background, wonderful nicknames ([name]Penny[/name], [name]Poppy[/name], [name]Nell[/name], [name]Nellie[/name]) and yes, it is a bit eccentric and quirky, but that makes the name unique. [name]Phoebe[/name], to me, is an okay name. I wouldn’t personally use it but I don’t hate it. When writing it out, it unfortunately makes me think of phobia (as a pysch major in college that isn’t surprising…) and the nickname [name]Fifi[/name] turns me off. That being said though, I don’t think it’s a terrible name, just not the greatest.
I love [name]Penelope[/name] for the reasons most mentioned - the great nicknames ([name]Poppy[/name], [name]Penny[/name], [name]Nelle[/name]) and because it’s a classic. I also think of the children’s book [name]Penelope[/name] Penguin that I always read as a child, and my mum still refers to to this day, haha. It’s such a great name.
[name]Pheobe[/name] on the otherhand is cute, but childish. I like it but would never use it myself. [name]Penelope[/name], I might.
Well, [name]Phoebe[/name]. =).
I like [name]Penelope[/name] too, but personally I prefer snappier, less frilly names. [name]Phoebe[/name] is just more usable to me. I also like [name]Daphne[/name], but am not fond of [name]Chloe[/name] and [name]Zoe[/name].
I find [name]Phoebe[/name] to be a very spunky name. I’ve never met another child other than my daughter named [name]Phoebe[/name], and always get complimented on it. I like the weird spelling, because I think it is a built-in popularity deterrent. (at least I hope so!!)
Between the two I like [name]Penelope[/name]. I used to work with a woman named [name]Penelope[/name] be and she was a strong, hard working, and deeply respected woman.
[name]Phoebe[/name] alwys makes me think of Friends. Also, for some reason I see it more as a name for a cat than a little girl…wasn’t there a [name]Saturday[/name] [name]Night[/name] Live scene with a cat named [name]Phoebe[/name]?
I love both [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Penelope[/name] so much. Their quirkiness is so appealing. I think a lot of people get put off by the letter “P” which is quirky in itself. But, hey, make a muscle and be original. [name]Phoebe[/name] is a classic Greek name, and so is [name]Penelope[/name]. I love those classic names - lots of history.
Yes, [name]Phoebe[/name] ends in an “ie” sound, but it’s different because the sound is spelled “e”. For me, that changes everything.
If you love [name]Penelope[/name] and hate [name]Penny[/name], it’s not so hard to get people to use an original nn like [name]Poppy[/name] or [name]Polly[/name] or [name]Nell[/name]. I would just say, her nn is [name]Polly[/name] - that’s the nn I would use by the way.
I think of the two, my fave of the monent is [name]Penelope[/name], but it’s a hard call.
