[name]Do[/name] you like this name? Is the nickname substantial enough or do you like the full name for a given name? [name]Do[/name] you think my daughter would absolutely hate it? It’s the name of the littlest daughter in Five [name]Little[/name] Peppers and [name]How[/name] They Grew.
The nickname is not at all substantial enough, it sounds silly and sort of frivolous on its own. If i were called Phronsie, i’d definitely want [name]Sophronia[/name] to fall back on.
It’s very quaint. Resembles [name]Fonzie[/name]. I like [name]Sophronia[/name] but i don’t think i’m sold on Phronsie in real life.
Is it substantial enough? Absolutely not. On the other hand [name]Sophronia[/name] is stunning.
Yep, thought of [name]Fonzie[/name].
Very much dislike Phronsie, despite the book. Looks like some obscure branch of neurology. But [name]Sophronia[/name] is spectacular; very interesting literary/historical namesake, extremely uncommon, but close enough to [name]Sophia[/name] to be wearable.
I have a soft spot for nicknames as given names. I like just Phronsie. I have a ton of nicknames on my list of favorite names, and I think they have a vintage vibe to them. Lots of girls used to be given the names [name]Essie[/name], [name]Millie[/name], [name]Addie[/name], etc., without having a “full” given name. I think it’s charming. Besides, if Phronsie is what she would be called, then it is my opinion that Phronsie is what her birth certificate should say. Would she hate it? I think everybody hates their name at some point, but you could foster in her a love for her name from a young age by telling her how much YOU love it and why.
[name]EDIT[/name]: I’ll add that many people feel it is a disservice to your child to give her only a “nickname.” This could be problematic in the professional world on resumes and the like. Still, I think that in this upcoming generation, almost anything goes in terms of names, and different styles will be much more widely accepted.
[name]Sophronia[/name] is way cool. It’s both sober and ornate. Phronzie egads no! [name]Sophie[/name] is the natural nickname, and it’s a nice one. I think [name]Sonia[/name]/[name]Sonya[/name] is also pretty and velvety, a trimmed-down everyday option for [name]Sophronia[/name].
I actually don’t like [name]Sophronia[/name] very much - the only reason I would give the name [name]Sophronia[/name] is for the “resume name”. Phronsie is the name I like a lot, but not sure about.
I agree with everyone else, but would like to ask what’s wrong with [name]Sophie[/name] as a nickname?
I would punt my parents in the face if they gave me the full name Phronsie. It reminsd me of [name]Fonzie[/name] and is really, really terrible.
[name]Sophronia[/name] is lovely though. [name]Sophie[/name] also makes a nice nickname, or [name]Ronnie[/name] (not my thing, but people like it), or [name]Nia[/name].
Still not sure about Phronsie after the [name]Fonzie[/name] comments? Sorry to come down hard on you about it… but I think it’s just vile, really. Maybe if your daughter were going to be a big furry monster with a deep muppet voice and fern-fronds growing out of her head… then I’d give Phronsie a thumbs-up.
Nicknames as full names are all right, I think (nobody bats an eyelash at [name]Molly[/name] or [name]Jack[/name], do they?!), but Phronsie is unfamiliar enough to most people that it could become an annoyance to your daughter. [name]One[/name] of my great-grandmothers was a Sophrona (called both Phronsie and Phrona), a variant that had a fair amount of use in the 19th century. Dropping the i seems to make it a little more approachable as a name.
There’s also Sophronisbe / Sophronisba, but that might be compounding the problem
Uh oh! Sorry to insult your great-grandma’s actual name [name]Maple[/name]. I’m amazed that it was a real nickname for [name]Sophronia[/name] though. It really is a fine line with those funny old nicknames… [name]Hattie[/name] for [name]Harriet[/name], [name]Flossie[/name] for [name]Florence[/name], [name]Dot[/name] for [name]Dorothy[/name], [name]Lottie[/name] for [name]Charlotte[/name]… I like those. But then there’s [name]Fanny[/name], and Phronsie.
My name is Phronsie. I haven’t had any issues with it and most people like the originality of my name. It’s substantial enough as a standalone name. No, you can’t get personalized items that are pre-made with the name on them, but it’s not that big of a deal.
I personally wouldn’t want my full name to be Phronsie. It does kind of sound like a Muppet. [name]Sophronia[/name] is lovely though.
