Piccolo As a Name?

So I’ve thought of how Piccolo could work as a name, and wanted to get some opinions about it. Personally, I tend to think of it as a girl’s name, like [name]Piper[/name]. I think it’s cute, but I don’t think I’d use it to name my own child. What do you think?

I definitely think it’s very odd, and I don’t think it would be usable as a fn. Maybe as mn for the child of a musician. It does have a pretty sound.

I don’t like instrument names, so this is a no for me. Also it reminds me of Dragonball/Dragonball Z/ etc… because of the green dude named Piccolo. So to me if it was used, it would be more of a boy’s name.

I think it leads to teasing especially if the kid does play an instrument, kids will think they should play the piccolo because their name is piccolo, so if she wanted to do trumpet or trombone, it would cause a field day of “Shouldn’t you play the piccolo?”

It’s a no go for me too. There are so many pretty musical terms that could be used as names, but instruments are rarely among them, Piccolo in particular is a little too cutesy [name]IMO[/name].

I actually like it. [name]Music[/name] has always been a bit part of my life, and I think Piccolo has a cool sound. I definitely wouldn’t use it as a FN, but it makes a nice GP, or maybe even a MN. I think it sounds more boyish than girly, though, personally.

There’s a rapper out of [name]Miami[/name] named Piccalo, you might want to look up some of his videos since you may run into people who think you named your child after him

That’s a definite no for me. I would also never name my child Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, or Tuba. If I saw the name Piccolo, I would assume it was a girl, but I’m not sure why, since technically it looks like a masculine name.

This! And I think of Pinocchio.

This is exactly what I thought of when I saw it. Also, if it WERE to be used for a boys’ name, I sure wouldn’t want to be a boy named after a “little flute”, if you catch my drift. I get the feeling it would lead to teasing as he got older.

As a girls’ name I still don’t like it. There are plenty of musically themed girls’ names - maybe [name]Calypso[/name] for the -o ending? - that I think are much more wearable.

No, too strange for me. Also, I knew someone with Piccolo as a last name, and it’s all surname to me.

Nooo! It means ‘small’ in Italian! (I have no Italian heritage, nor do I even live in Europe, so I’m guessing this is reasonably common knowledge - not saying you should have known it, just that plenty of people will and he’ll get laughed at).

Also sounds like Pinocchio.

I agree with jeska, small was the FIRST thing that came to mind, and then, I thought of those mini champagne bottles, they’re called piccolos too.

I actually was aware that piccolo means “small” in Italian. It just didn’t strike me as a particularly negative meaning. But yes, it would make any trips to [name]Italy[/name] a bit awkward.

Having never watched DragonBall Z, I didn’t realize that connotation. It would probably be best for a child to not share a name with a character from DragonBall Z.

no way, NO. It’s also remind me to dragon ball. Big green dude and something…
even for boys I don’t like Piccolo.

Piccolo def does not translate well - I think a child of either gender would have an inferiority complex with this name

[name]Just[/name] in case some you are curious, I google Piccolo, and of course now only did I get piccolos, I got the green dude from DBZ, so here’s a picture in case you want to know what he looks like:

[name]Way[/name] too Dragonball Z.

As an instrument, the piccolo has never been a favorite of mine. The name seems so sugary sweet. Not my favorite.

Ha ha – thanks catloverd! I’m not at all familiar with DragonballZ, so I have definitely been wondering.

[name]Don[/name]'t like it at all. It’s not a noun that works well as a name, it just isn’t.
