I am thinking about my answer to this
I think it’s because since it’s an unusual name for a girl, I think the more traditional spelling makes it less unusual. The only other reason is, that when I search “baby Merritt” as well as “baby Merit” on social media just to see how much the name is being used, lots of baby girls pop up and they are 90% Merritt over any other spelling. So Merit feels a little off to me. However I really like the look of Wells and Merit written down and the look of Elizabeth Merit. I weighed out the pros and cons of both and I think Merritt just wins in the end. Although it’s close for lots of reasons.
