Pippin!

Hi berries!

I’ve been so smitten with [name_m]Pippin[/name_m] lately! I think he’s so quirky and fun. [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] seems the most natural path to him, via LOTR, and I do really like [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]! But I’m not sure I would pick [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] over most of the other names on my list… and I’m not sure what else he could be a nn for. So I guess I have 2 questions for you—what are your thoughts on just [name_m]Pippin[/name_m]? And if it doesn’t work for you, what besides [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] works for a more formal name for a [name_m]Pippin[/name_m]?

I like [name_m]Philip[/name_m] nn Pip/Pippin, too, but I like [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] more than [name_m]Philip[/name_m]. Maybe one day I’ll completely fall in love with [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m], but in case I don’t, I’m just testing the waters for other options.

Thank you!

I like [name_m]Pippin[/name_m]! He is very sweet and pleasantly quirky—the perfect example of a “storybook name”—perhaps a little “twee” (for lack of a better word) as a standalone, but probably not impossible to pull off either, especially considering the current popularity of [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] in the UK.

Besides [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] or [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m] (:smiling_face_with_three_hearts:) and [name_m]Philip[/name_m], the only full name option I can think of at the moment would be [name_m]Crispin[/name_m]. :fallen_leaf:

My apologies for not being very helpful! I am sure the Berries will provide you with some wonderful ideas.

I love Wendy’s idea of [name_m]Crispin[/name_m]! I think [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] could also work.

I love [name_m]Pippin[/name_m]. Maybe shortening to [name_m]Pip[/name_m] for an adult? But they’d have the full name too. I searched for names containing ‘ph’ for inspo. Without N, maybe more intuitive for [name_m]Pip[/name_m] but too stretchy for [name_m]Pippin[/name_m]:

[name_m]Alphaeus[/name_m]
Alphius
[name_m]Christopher[/name_m]
[name_m]Phelix[/name_m]

N included:

Jean-Christophe or Jean-Phillipe if you happen to be naming with a [name_f]French[/name_f] partner!
[name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]
[name_m]Naphtali[/name_m]
[name_m]Philemon[/name_m] :light_blue_heart:
[name_m]Phineas[/name_m] :light_blue_heart:
[name_f]Phoenix[/name_f]
[name_m]Stephen[/name_m]

I also did a search containing ‘pen’:
[name_m]Carpenter[/name_m]
[name_m]Penuel[/name_m]
[name_m]Spencer[/name_m]
[name_m]Spence[/name_m]
[name_m]Penrose[/name_m]
[name_m]Pendleton[/name_m]

Finally:

[name_m]Patrick[/name_m] - stretchy like a good stretch after a satisfying sleep and I love it!!

:four_leaf_clover: I hope you find your [name_m]Pippin[/name_m] companion very soon.

I like [name_m]Pippin[/name_m] as a nickname for a young child or as a general endearment – but not as a full name. It feels very elfin and mischievous because of the short, chirpy repetitive sound and ‘pip’ tending to relate to small things (reminds me of similar words like pip-squeak, pixie).

I think [name_m]Pip[/name_m] works for any ‘P’ name – I suppose [name_m]Pippin[/name_m] could sort of work as an extension of that. Better yet, P first name, P middle name e.g. [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Phineas[/name_m] called [name_m]Pippin[/name_m].

Some ideas I don’t think I’ve seen…

[name_m]Perrin[/name_m]
[name_m]Preston[/name_m]
[name_m]Pierson[/name_m]
[name_m]Paxton[/name_m]
Preben
[name_m]Prosper[/name_m]
[name_m]Peter[/name_m] (or Peter-Benjamin)
[name_m]Paul[/name_m] (or John-Paul, Paul-William)
[name_m]Kipling[/name_m]
[name_m]Kipton[/name_m]
[name_m]Cyprian[/name_m]
[name_m]Espen[/name_m]
[name_m]Campion[/name_m]
[name_f]Ripley[/name_f]
[name_m]Tripp[/name_m]

Pippin is a very sweet nickname! My first pet was a rabbit named Pippin (after the dog in a kid’s show called Come Outside).

I think any P name could lead to Pippin really! I know a Pip (whose full name is Catherine) because she was small as a toddler. So I think Pippin would work in a similar way, although I guess you wouldn’t be able to plan ahead for that specific route but I think it’s a flexible nickname that doesn’t necessarily need to have a similar full name

I like [name_m]Pippin[/name_m] as a standalone name!

[name_m]Pip[/name_m] is one of my favourite nicknames of all time and I’m a big [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] ‘Pip’/‘Pippin’ fan! Having said that I do agree with kachenka that it may not be the easiest for someone to grow up with.

[name_m]Other[/name_m] than [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] I think it works for ~
[name_m]Philip[/name_m]
[name_m]Peter[/name_m]
[name_m]Patrick[/name_m]
[name_m]Crispin[/name_m] (@Demoiselle genius!)
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m]
[name_m]Christopher[/name_m]
[name_m]Phineas[/name_m]

A+ taste in children’s tv :ok_hand:t2:

I don’t see how a lot of the suggested names would lead to Pippin…

It is cute, but I don’t know if it works as a standalone name for an adult.

Alpin
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m]
[name_m]Pepin[/name_m]
[name_m]Piran[/name_m]
Turpin
[name_m]Cipriano[/name_m]
[name_m]Cyprian[/name_m]

This is what made me wonder if it was usable! That combined with the fact that [name_m]Pippin[/name_m] doesn’t make an obvious nn for really any name.

Oh yay! Thank you! Some of the suggestions I’m struggling with tbh… I think [name_m]Pippin[/name_m] for [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] works in my head BECAUSE of LOTR, but otherwise they feel like huge stretches. It also reminds me a bit of [name_m]Pepijn[/name_m] which I think gets reasonable use in the Netherlands? If [name_m]Pepijn[/name_m] can be used, [name_m]Pippin[/name_m] feels like it can be too?

Yeah I’m struggling with that myself tbh. [name_m]Cyprian[/name_m] I can sort of see but I don’t know if I like it more than [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]. It is an intriguing idea but idk if I could use it with my beloved [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m].

All this to say, struggling to feel the tie with most of these, berries, sadly, though many of them are wonderful names! For now maybe I’ll keep entertaining [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m], just [name_m]Pippin[/name_m], and [name_m]Cyprian[/name_m], and maybe something will stick with time.

Thank you all!

[name_m]Pippin[/name_m] is sassy and zippy – playful and kind of fits in with the likes of [name_f]Vinnie[/name_f], [name_m]Jem[/name_m], [name_m]Kip[/name_m], [name_m]Mackay[/name_m], [name_m]Kit[/name_m], [name_f]Rivi[/name_f], and Tamlin… but just from a UK perspective, it does remind me of the dog from the show Come Outside

I like [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] a lot – handsome, sparkly, wild, and bright

Some others…

[name_m]Crispin[/name_m]
[name_m]Perrin[/name_m]
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m]

I don’t have much to add since I would definitely opt for Peregrine/Peregrin nn [name_m]Pippin[/name_m], just that our friend’s (she says hi!) son [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] nn [name_m]Pippin[/name_m] is 14 and still going by [name_m]Pippin[/name_m] :woman_shrugging: Don’t know if it will be a permanent nn or not!

Eeep, I miss her around here! I think she just sent me a friend invite for her kiddos’ dancing group last week, I can’t believe how big [name_f]Iolanthe[/name_f] is! :sob::sob:

And tbh, he’s why I wondered if just [name_m]Pippin[/name_m] could work. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:. I’m still thinking about Peregrine—he is lovely and my grandma loved birds so any bird name feels special.
