Please Don't Flinch

I’ve recently heard of [name]Laurence[/name] for a girl… What do you think, is it terrible? Personally, I thought it was kind of cute… Like a cross between [name]Lauren[/name] and [name]Florence[/name]. Could I get some opinions, please?

While it’s not as popular now as it has been in the past I still think [name]Laurence[/name] is firmly in the male camp, sorry. Maybe adding an a might help? I’m not a big fan of Laurenca but it sounds more feminine to me.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I thought [name]Laurence[/name] was acceptable as a girls’ name. I remember taking French for two years in high school, and they had us using French names, and such, and the activities always created people with French names. For some reason, I keep thinking that [name]Laurence[/name] was like the feminine version of [name]Laurent[/name] or something. I don’t know. I could definitely be wrong. I’m not a huge fan of [name]Laurence[/name]/[name]Lawrence[/name] on either gender, but I do think it has some cute nns for girls–[name]Laura[/name], [name]Lauren[/name], [name]Wren[/name]…

Good luck!

I agree with ashthedreamer. [name]Laurence[/name] is legitimately used for girls. Behindthename lists it as the “French feminine form of [name]Laurentius[/name].”

A [name]Laura[/name] in my high school french class used it as her in-class french name.

I think it depends on the pronunciation. [name]LAW[/name]-rence seems really masculine to me, while law-RONCE sounds like it could be feminine. I guess it has a lot of feminine nicknames - [name]Laura[/name], [name]Lara[/name], [name]Wren[/name], perhaps even [name]Lola[/name]. It could work if you really like it  You might also like [name]Laurel[/name].

I don’t know why but it just IS a male name. I can’t explain it! It really actually has feminine sound to it which is why I think you were drawn to it. Like why is [name]Lauren[/name] feminine but [name]Laurence[/name] isn’t? Doesn’t make sense but it kind of just is a fact. [name]Laurence[/name] is a male name. But [name]Lauren[/name] and [name]Laurie[/name] used to be only [name]Male[/name] names so [name]Laurence[/name] has a chance, you just have to be bold enough to go for it!

[name]Laurence[/name]= all male to me. And I hope it stays that way!

[name]Laurence[/name] is actually an acceptable name for a female in [name]France[/name]. The French male version is [name]Laurent[/name] and the female spelling is [name]Laurence[/name] (pronounced roughly “lo-RAWNS”). Depending on where you live, it may be considered somewhat odd to English speakers to hear a girl named [name]Laurence[/name].

I have a French teacher named [name]Laurence[/name], prn more like -[name]Lore[/name]-ohn-se rather than ‘lor-ence’, but I don’t think its a very nice name for a girl. [name]Laurent[/name], on the other hand, I can handle…

[name]Laurence[/name] is an acceptable girl’s name in some places, though I think with names like [name]Lauren[/name], [name]Laurel[/name], and [name]Laura[/name] we’ve pretty much got it covered. I definitely could see [name]Laurence[/name] on a girl but would prefer [name]Laurel[/name] or a variant.

[name]Laurence[/name] is all boy to me. I guess if you lived in [name]France[/name] it would be okay as a girl’s name, but really, I think there are far prettier Laur- names for girls ([name]Laura[/name], [name]Lauren[/name], [name]Laurel[/name]).

I totally agree.

I recently worked with a woman who just retired (probably in her 60’s) named [name]Laurence[/name] (prn lo-rawnce).
I think her parents maybe were French but she was 100% New Yorker. As with most names, it seemed normal to me the more I said the name, and knew the person behind the name.
