Please help! Daniella vs. Abigail

My husband and I absolutely cannot agree on the first name for our little girl – [name_f]Daniella[/name_f] ([name_u]Dani[/name_u]) or [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] ([name_u]Abby[/name_u]). Big brother’s name is [name_m]Jonah[/name_m]. This decision has put so much strain on our relationship and has been the most stressful issue in our 12 years together. Please help by telling me which name you prefer and why.
Thank you!!

Both are pretty names but [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] is more fitting with [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] - it is more classic than [name_f]Daniella[/name_f].

Best of luck in the name debacle - it happens to most of us!! [name_f]Remember[/name_f], the mom gets to fill in the birth certificate

What are the pros and cons for each name for you that are deciding between? I prefer [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] but ultimately it is your decision and only you know why you want each name. I can give you some more constructive advice if you explain a little.

[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] means joy of the father which I find very endearing. The name sounds good and has many nickname options.

[name_f]Daniella[/name_f] means God is my judge which is a bit more serious. This name also has many nickname options.

I would go with [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], because I like the meaning more and the way it sounds with [name_m]Jonah[/name_m].

[name_m]Jonah[/name_m] is lovely! I think [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] goes best with [name_m]Jonah[/name_m].

[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] is beautiful and perfect with [name_m]Jonah[/name_m]! [name_f]Daniela[/name_f] is a bit too…something. I would rather see [name_f]Danielle[/name_f] than [name_f]Daniela[/name_f]. Overall, [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] is your best bet.

A piece of advice, if you are both pulling for a different name, you may need to keep searching for something you both equally love. It was quite a challenge naming our daughter. We FINALLY found one we could agree on. I never could convince him to love my first (or 10th) choice. He only had 2 suggestions, so I had to start listing every name I even sort of liked. Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m].

Could you compromise and use both?

Such as:

[name_f]Daniella[/name_f] [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] (last name)
Or
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] [name_f]Daniella[/name_f] (last name)

If I had to pick one, I would choose [name_f]Daniella[/name_f].

Sorry in advance if this advice is just further complicating the situation, but this sounds like a serious impasse between you. Perhaps it might help to go back to the drawing board and consider other names that might lead to a compromise.

Here are some ideas that might (hopefully) unite elements of [name_f]Daniella[/name_f] and [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]:

[name_f]Abiela[/name_f] --according to nameberry a Hebrew name that means “God is my father”; kind of a mashup between [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] and [name_f]Daniella[/name_f], could it please you both? (nn. [name_u]Abby[/name_u] or [name_f]Ella[/name_f]).
Abriella–I just made this one up, which is generally not my style, but it’s another way to combine the two, and get to the nn [name_u]Abby[/name_u] ([name_f]Gabriella[/name_f] would be the more traditional pick…)

If it’s the “[name_u]Dani[/name_u]” part you want to stick with:

[name_f]Danica[/name_f] (still with [name_u]Dani[/name_u] as a nickname, but also [name_f]Nicki[/name_f] as a possibility)
[name_f]Danae[/name_f] (nn. [name_u]Dani[/name_u])

Without [name_u]Abby[/name_u] or [name_u]Dani[/name_u], but maybe still able to bridge the gap:

[name_f]Mariella[/name_f] (nn. [name_f]Mari[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f])
[name_f]Adela[/name_f] (could be nn [name_f]Addy[/name_f])
[name_f]Adalia[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Addy[/name_f], [name_f]Lia[/name_f], [name_f]Dollie[/name_f], etc)
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Ari[/name_u], [name_f]Bella[/name_f])
[name_f]Annabella[/name_f] (nn. [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Bella[/name_f])
[name_u]Darby[/name_u] or [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] as other “D” names with a “y” ending, but these don’t have the long form/nn option you seem to like
[name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] as an alternative to [name_u]Abby[/name_u] (but again no long form…)

Barring that, maybe you could go with the combo [name_f]Daniella[/name_f] [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] if she’s born on a time ending with an even number or [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] [name_f]Daniella[/name_f] if it’s odd or something totally arbitrary like that to take the decision out of your hands.

Good luck! I’d love to know what you decide on in the end!

I prefer [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] with [name_m]Jonah[/name_m]. [name_f]Daniella[/name_f] is more dated to me and [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], while so often used in the 90s as well seems more classic.

I think [name_f]Danielle[/name_f] would work better with [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] than [name_f]Daniella[/name_f]. I would vote [name_f]Danielle[/name_f].
