Please help me fall in love with nn Maddie

I love [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f]. [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f]. Such a beautiful name. I know it’s not everyone’s favorite spelling of [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]/[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] here, but that’s for another thread  Regardless of spelling though, I hesitate to use any Mad- name because I’ve never liked the go-to nn [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]. I can’t get past seeing the words “Mad” and “die” stuck together! [name_f]Maddy[/name_f] also just seems to me a good name for someone who is mad all the time. Gahhhh can anyone help me see the appeal of [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]/[name_f]Maddy[/name_f]?? [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] lovers out there please give me all the reasons to like it!

I love the spelling [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] and I love the nickname [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]! One of my best friends is [name_u]Madison[/name_u] nn [name_f]Maddi[/name_f] and I know a gorgeous 8 year old named [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] nn [name_f]Maddy[/name_f] :). I think it’s a gorgeous name and very versatile. It’s feminine but not super over the top frilly. And I personally don’t even think of Mad - Die or Mad - Y! I think it’s a very sweet name and can suit multiple personalities and ethnicities. I would go for it! [name_m]Even[/name_m] if you don’t love [name_f]Maddy[/name_f], once you’ve named her [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f], bring her home and people start calling her [name_f]Maddy[/name_f] you’ll wonder why you worried because it suits her so well!! Good luck and I hope you reach a decision that you are confident in :).

You don’t have to like [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]. If you don’t want to use it as a NN, don’t! Come up with your own creative NN. Most people will go off what you call your little one, and it will stick. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t be afraid to be unique! Good luck!

I knew a [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] who went by [name_u]Lane[/name_u]. It really suited her. I also know a [name_f]Mada[/name_f] pronounced [name_f]MAY[/name_f] da. You could perhaps use [name_f]Mae[/name_f] or [name_f]May[/name_f], or this is a stretch but maybe even [name_f]Molly[/name_f] or [name_f]Malley[/name_f].

I personally don’t love the nickname [name_f]Maddy[/name_f] either. My niece is [name_f]Madalyn[/name_f] and if I call her [name_f]Madalyn[/name_f] she flips out because she prefers [name_f]Maddy[/name_f]! (She’s a very dramatic 8 year old.) Despite not loving it, I admit it fits her well. She’s loud and spunky and full of energy. If you don’t love it, you don’t have to use it. Use her full name or call her [name_u]Del[/name_u]. Or just see what comes naturally. I think the best way for you to fall in love with [name_f]Maddy[/name_f] is to have a [name_f]Maddy[/name_f]. Perhaps [name_f]Maddy[/name_f] will never fit her and you’ll never have to fall for it. But if it fits her, or it’s a nick name she chooses herself, you’ll love it because it’s her.
At a year and a half my daughter assigned herself the nickname [name_f]Lulu[/name_f], a nickname I never loved. She turns 4 next month and still refers to herself as [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]. It’s a nick name I now consider sweet and spunky and perfect because it’s my daughter, and I consider her sweet, spunky and perfect!
Good luck.

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]! I would personally spell the full name [name_f]Madalyn[/name_f] as I’ve known two and always thought their names were so pretty, but I like [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] too. This might not help since you don’t know her yourself, but if you’re worried about the ‘mad’ thing, one of the Madalyns I’m good friends with is one of the most cheerful, energized people I know. Another way to think of it is that [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] is really just [name_f]Addie[/name_f]/[name_f]Addy[/name_f] with an M, and there’s nothing wrong with [name_f]Addie[/name_f]. You didn’t mention this in your post, but I know a lot of people don’t like common names, which could include [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] also. I think that if you go that way, it’s just a matter of making the name their own, which isn’t that hard to do. For example, my friend [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] has a very distinct personality – she loves everything about the 90s, she’s in an all-girl band that plays covers of classic rock songs, she owns five guitars, and she likes to say things like ‘groovy’ and ‘check you later’ which always makes people stop and take notice in 2018. When I hear the name [name_f]Maddie[/name_f], I don’t think of all the other Maddies out there, I think of her, because she’s so unique. Sorry this was such a long reply, but I really do love the name and I hope you eventually will too!

I love love [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], I helped name my young cousin this name; it’s gorgeous. She gets [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] but I just don’t think of Mad or Die when I hear or see her name. That said I don’t love [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] as much as the full version. One of my friends calls her [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], “[name_u]Mattie[/name_u]”. I also know a [name_f]Lainey[/name_f], and I’m sure there are other possibilities depending on the second name. I could even see [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] for [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] even if a stretch!

I really dislike [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]/[name_f]Maddy[/name_f] too! So I am no help there, oops

But I do want to suggest [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f] nn [name_f]Addie[/name_f]/[name_f]Addy[/name_f]. For some reason, [name_f]Addie[/name_f] appeals to me a lot more than [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] does. In just dropping one M, you could get the same structure and sound as [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f], but without the Mad connotations. [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f]

I don’t like it either. There are other nickname options, but most people’s go-to nickname for it is going to be [name_f]Maddie[/name_f], unfortunately.

I’m a longtime teacher and if I never meet another [name_f]Maddie[/name_f], it will be too soon.

Sorry! Cute enough nn, just millions of them out there.

I adore the nn [name_f]Maddie[/name_f], but realize there are a lot of them out there. My friend’s daughter is [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] and they call her [name_f]Linnie[/name_f] (or Lynnie?) which I think is very sweet. You can also just call her by her full name!

I don’t think you necessarily need to settle on [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] as the nickname. Between the popularity of [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f], [name_u]Madison[/name_u], and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], there are a LOT of little girls going by [name_f]Maddy[/name_f], so I think it would be best for you to use a different nickname, especially as you’re not a huge fan of [name_f]Maddy[/name_f]. Perhaps: [name_u]Mandy[/name_u], [name_f]Mindy[/name_f], [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], [name_f]Milly[/name_f], [name_u]Lynn[/name_u]/Lynnie, [name_f]Lina[/name_f], “M” > “[name_f]Em[/name_f]” or “[name_f]Emmy[/name_f]”, [name_f]Della[/name_f], [name_f]Aly[/name_f], [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] or [name_f]Magda[/name_f] (from the meaning ‘woman of [name_f]Magdala[/name_f]’)

And you can always use the middle name too in combination with the first name [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] to come up with a nickname. For example - [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] could be nicknamed [name_f]Macy[/name_f].

You could choose [name_f]Maddy[/name_f] or [name_f]Addy[/name_f] instead.
