Hi,
I have a request: a name for a fictional kingdom. I’m not sure if I’m allowed to ask this here but I’m desperate.
I want to apologize beforehand for the long description below. If you survive to all the prattle, could you please suggest name(s) for the kingdom? And can you tell me what you think of the names I’ve considered?
So, roughly, this is a fantasy story about a lost kingdom, its survivors and allies struggling to free themselves from a powerful enemy who’s the king of their former brother country, their west neighbors. They think they were betrayed and now the kingdom is believed lost, but everything his a tad more complicated. The mc, a young woman, is from this kingdom, from an almost extinguished noble line.
The nation is very old, dating the beginning of civilization, so it used to be a powerful kingdom. They applaud knowledge, so they have a very important college for science and magic, internationally. It’s a parliamentary monarchy. Their banner is navy blue and golden white, with a white dragon in the middle which is kind of their national, characteristic animal. They speak an ancient language which I imagine to sound like a combination of French, Greek and Spanish. The old form of the language (which is the one they speak), is mostly lost nowadays. They venerate nature deities and a couple of major gods (the god of war and strategy is quite important), the capital has the goddess of life and death as patroness (these two concepts are very important to the people).
There was a time, centuries before the story takes place, that people deemed the kingdom too powerful (economically, as an international authority, technologically, in armed forces). Some held grudge against them because it has a large amount of people with magic by birth, this because of a long story that’s unnecessary to explain here. Eventually some started to think they wanted the whole world for themselves. A war conflict brew from this but that’s another story.
They have a tense relationship with the kingdom across the eastern ocean: Marsallis, which speaks the same language but with their own jargon. As I already mentioned they used to have a very close relationship with the western neighbor kingdom, until they were invaded and almost crushed.
They are proud, artistic and a bit arrogant people, but they never turn their backs to the ones in need. They protect magic and its creatures, they teach and supervise magic wielders; they feel a duty to do so. They are great warriors, but not undefeatable. They’re achieved in music and arts, their festivities can last days and spread across the whole nation. The citizens are of average stature (not too tall but not considered short), they have tanned, olive or brown skin, dark shades of hair (occasionally a blond), and the eyes depend on the ascendance (especially if there’s magic in the family line).
Their borders at the south are a desert, at the far north it snows. But the weather is mostly template, warm at the sea coasts where the capital is settled. Naturally, the fashion involves fluid and light fabrics; the nobility and such likes to wear elegant but not too overloaded or frilly clothing, as well as exceptionally long, billowing capes and sleeves.
First I had called this kingdom Ormantur, but it sounds too pretentious, so I want to change it. (I called their main library Ormantur instead, and I think it sounds well.)
Then I wanted to call it Calethyia, but there’s a capital in other kingdom (which is very important to the story), that is called Calerath. And as you can guess it sounds too similar. I’ve been searching and breaking my head for a name, but I haven’t found the right one.
Other names I’m considering are:
Oriath
Allesey
Eparsia
[name_m]Al[/name_m]éria
Anveres
Corceigea/Córciga
Cartés
Cartarese
Carsea/Caesia
Brounea
Arlés
Finesia
I’m thinking of a name related to invisible, mist, obscure, fog, or something of that sort for reasons related to their geography and history. I’m not sure I want a name with E or A, because I have many of those for other places in the story.
I’m desperate for suggestions. So tell me what you think and if you have a name in mind. Anything is appreciated.
