I like august more. I have never heard of amias, but it does sound close to [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] if Iām pronouncing it the way itās intended.
Names similar to amias:
[name_m]Elias[/name_m], [name_m]Silas[/name_m], [name_f]Amaya[/name_f], [name_m]Emerson[/name_m], atlas, etc.
Congratulations to you and your family!
Both are great options but I would choose [name_m]August[/name_m]! Thereās only one spelling and one pronunciation so thereās no chance for confusion and since big brother also has an āAā name, the different endings separate the names a little more. [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] and [name_m]Amias[/name_m] feel a little to close (to me) because they share the starting āAmā sound and the ending āsā sound.
[name_f]My[/name_f] vote is for [name_m]August[/name_m], itās hard to explain exactly why I feel like he fits his brothers better, besides just being a gut thing when I see the names together. I think he has that same vintage charm and 2 syllable flow. Heās very classy like his brothers. Congratulations on baby boy!! [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] and [name_m]Amias[/name_m] have a similar ending sound so I also think [name_m]August[/name_m] is more distinct.
Have you been gravitating to one or the other or is it 50/50? I would say if you are preferring one I would lean into that, even if itās not 100%. if youāre truly split, I would say [name_m]August[/name_m] is more distinct in sound than [name_m]Amias[/name_m] from his brotherās name. they are both nice names though so I can see why itās a tough choice! I wonder if [name_m]Alden[/name_m] would be a good fit? I also want to suggest [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] but is also quite similar to [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m].
Donāt worry, your baby boy will have a great name soon enough
Thank you for all your responses. I really appreciate everyoneās help!
[name_m]Emrys[/name_m] is gorgeous! I just looked it up and itās the Welsh variation of [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], so unfortunately I donāt think Iād be able to use this gem
[name_m]Wonderful[/name_m] suggestion though @rosajune - thank you! x
I think [name_m]Amias[/name_m] goes best with [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] and [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]
Initially, I thought [name_m]August[/name_m], but now Iām worried about the popularity of the name. I know that shouldnāt matter, but I do really like that our other two boysā names are recognisable, with strong historical roots, yet they arenāt used too often. I do like hidden gems, so to speak!
Congratulations on the birth of your 3rd baby boy! I hope everyone is doing well.
Both your options are great, but considering your oldest sonsā names, I would go with [name_m]August[/name_m]. In my opinion, [name_m]Amias[/name_m] is quite similar to [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], which would set [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] apart, unintentionally. I also prefer the name [name_m]August[/name_m]. It has a really nice meaning. Itās classic, charming, gentle and handsome. [name_m]August[/name_m] has some nickname options that you may like, too!
Thank you All those qualities you mentioned about [name_m]August[/name_m] is what Iām looking for in a name x
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any other suggestions? I just want to make sure Iāve considered other usable options!
Thank you again x
I think you should also consider [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] or [name_m]Augustine[/name_m]!

Iām sure you will find the perfect name!
Follow your heart, you will soon know your babyās name.
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] and [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] are fabulous!
I like [name_m]August[/name_m] best for you - charming and warm and beautiful, but also because [name_m]Amias[/name_m] feels a bit similar to [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m].
I think [name_m]August[/name_m] goes better, for that [name_m]Brit[/name_m] āturn of centuryā (gentlemanly) feel and then theyāre all more or less equally known.
But I personally wouldnāt choose either - because of the repeat A right after [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], and especially [name_m]Amias[/name_m] with repeat two first letters and ending letter. I also donāt love the nicknames for [name_m]August[/name_m].
If they were my sons (and I love [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] & Ambrose), they would be, [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] &
[name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m]
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m]
[name_m]Rafferty[/name_m]
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m]
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m]
[name_m]Harrison[/name_m]
[name_m]Julian[/name_m]
[name_m]Simeon[/name_m]
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]
Iād choose [name_m]August[/name_m] the pronunciation is more obvious to me.
They are both handsome options. Iāve had both of them on my list at some point. [name_m]Amias[/name_m] is more in keeping with the gentlemanly style of [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] and [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], however, [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] or [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] would be great alternatives to [name_m]August[/name_m] and offer more sound variety compared to [name_m]Amias[/name_m].
I lean towards [name_m]Amias[/name_m] as I donāt find it too close in sound to [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], but [name_m]August[/name_m] is a lovely choice too. It will depend where you live but [name_m]August[/name_m] is seeing an uptick in usage so I would take that into consideration if youāre truly wanting something less common or under the radar. If think that upward trend is what took away the shine for me personally.
If I may suggest some names from my own list that might appeal to you:
[name_m]Lionel[/name_m]
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m]
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]
[name_m]Colin[/name_m]
[name_m]Douglas[/name_m]
[name_m]Irving[/name_m]
[name_m]Julius[/name_m]
[name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m]
[name_m]Heath[/name_m]
[name_m]Titus[/name_m]
[name_m]Lazarus[/name_m]
[name_m]Ernest[/name_m]
[name_m]Wallace[/name_m]
[name_m]Linus[/name_m]
[name_m]Amias[/name_m] is much more distinctive and original.
Congratulations!
I love August best! Itās classic, strong, and masculine with sweet nicknames (Auggie, Gus)! Using Amias would give all the boys names with a strong āmā sound- Iām not sure if thatās something you want. It also starts with the same sound as Ambrose: āam.ā August gives more options and sounds wonderful with the older boysā names. I also second the idea of Augustus or Augustine; theyāre strong heavy-hitting names like Ambrose and Edmund!
Both of your options are great!
But I think Iād have to go with [name_m]August[/name_m]. I donāt love the similar Am- beginning for [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] and [name_m]Amias[/name_m]. [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] and [name_m]August[/name_m] feel more distinct.
Thank you for more of your replies and suggestions Itās been great being able to read your thoughts about this, as Iāve been going around in circles in my head.
I love the suggestions of [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] and [name_m]Augustine[/name_m]. I think both names are beautiful and underused and tick that hidden gem criterion.
Other names under consideration (in no particular order) are:
[name_m]Otto[/name_m]
[name_f]France[/name_f]
[name_m]Leander[/name_m]
[name_m]Lysander[/name_m]
[name_m]Octavian[/name_m]
[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]
[name_m]Wilfred[/name_m]
Still very undecided, as you can see!
Too bad about [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] (would have been a great fit but I agree too similar) but I love the suggestion of [name_m]Augustine[/name_m]! and from your shortlist there, [name_m]Octavian[/name_m] really stands out. Starts with its own vowel, and has those vintage, autumnal, gentleman-like vibes of [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] and [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], recognizable but definitely still a hidden gem!
