Our list is all over the place and we are not finding out what we’re having, so need to think of boy and girl options. Our son is named [name]Hudson[/name]. Our surname begins with B and is 2 syllables. We have a list of names we like but just can’t seem to find anything we [name]LOVE[/name]. We like preppy/hipster/vintage names…if that makes any sense at all
Please let me know what you think of these, or suggest others.
BOYS:
*Ideally would love a FN that works with [name]Thomas[/name] as a MN.
[name]Alden[/name]
[name]Anderson[/name]
[name]Beckett[/name]
[name]Bennett[/name]
[name]Blake[/name]
[name]Bryce[/name]
[name]Calder[/name]
[name]Desmond[/name]
[name]Emerson[/name]
[name]Fletcher[/name] (If our last name ends in “er”, is this too repetitive?)
[name]Julian[/name] ([name]Jude[/name])
[name]Leo[/name] (Too popular? Too “safe”?)
[name]Lincoln[/name]
[name]Milo[/name]
[name]Reece[/name]/[name]Rhys[/name]
[name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name] (Again…our last name ends in “er”)
[name]Theodore[/name]
[name]Warner[/name] (“er” issue?)
[name]Warren[/name]
GIRLS:
(Ideally, MN [name]Amelia[/name] unless we use [name]Amelia[/name] as FN.)
[name]Amelia[/name] ([name]Milly[/name])
[name]Annabelle[/name]
[name]Blair[/name]/[name]Blaire[/name]
[name]Daphne[/name]
[name]Emmeline[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Margot[/name]
[name]Natalie[/name] (Probably way too popular for our tastes…but I do love the name)
[name]Pearl[/name]
[name]Rene[/name]/[name]Renee[/name]
[name]Sloan[/name]/[name]Sloane[/name]
[name]Vivienne[/name]
[name]Zoe[/name]
I think I would avoid "er"names if the last name ends in “er”.
I think these artiste names - [name]Beckett[/name], [name]Calder[/name], [name]Emerson[/name] - do seem a bit eye-roll provoking. (As if you are saying that you love [name]Calder[/name]'s mobiles so much you just HAD to name your child after him, and aren’t you well-educated for having such a personal relationship with his art.)
[name]Blair[/name] may still have too many “Facts of Life” connotations
The rest seem just fine. There are more [name]Leo[/name]'s and Theodores about than there used to be, but not to the extent that your child will be [name]Theodore[/name] LastInitial all of his life. I also think you can get away with [name]Natalie[/name].
[name]Alden[/name] - I really like this. I think it goes well with [name]Hudson[/name] without matching too much and it would go well with a B…er name
[name]Anderson[/name] - this is too surnamey for me.
[name]Beckett[/name] - do you ever use [name]Huck[/name] for [name]Hudson[/name]? this might be a prob or maybe you like the idea, just a thought.
[name]Bennett[/name] - I really like this name a lot and it goes well with [name]Hudson[/name], but I’m not sure about B first and last
[name]Blake[/name]/[name]Bryce[/name] - both of these are very “country club” to me, and double B’s just intensifies that.
[name]Desmond[/name] - not a favorite, [name]Damon[/name]? [name]Devon[/name]? [name]Dashiell[/name]?
[name]Emerson[/name] - nice, goes well with [name]Hudson[/name] , though might be too matchy with 2 -son names
[name]Calder[/name]/[name]Fletcher[/name]/[name]Sawyer[/name]/[name]Warner[/name] - I would steer clear of things like [name]Fletcher[/name] [name]Butler[/name], way too rhymey/matchy
[name]Julian[/name] ([name]Jude[/name]) - What about [name]Judson[/name]? or [name]Jett[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] - love it, if you feel its too popular what about [name]Leopold[/name] or [name]Lennox[/name]? [name]Lincoln[/name] - I like this a lot, goes well with [name]Hudson[/name] and I like nn [name]Link[/name]
[name]Milo[/name] - great name, though very different in feel from [name]Hudson[/name]
[name]Reece[/name]/[name]Rhys[/name] - great name, [name]Rhett[/name]?
[name]Rowan[/name] - again, great name
[name]Theodore[/name] - I like [name]Theo[/name] a lot, very classical compared to [name]Hudson[/name] [name]Warren[/name] - I think this is a good compromise between the trendier side of [name]Hudson[/name] and the surname/classical side you seem to like.
GIRLS:
(Ideally, MN [name]Amelia[/name] unless we use [name]Amelia[/name] as FN.)
[name]Amelia[/name] ([name]Milly[/name]) - I really love this name. Great!
[name]Annabelle[/name] - okay
[name]Blair[/name]/[name]Blaire[/name] - meh, I prefer [name]Claire[/name], [name]Blair[/name] feels too mushy [name]Daphne[/name] - love.
[name]Emmeline[/name] - meh, okay
[name]Josephine[/name] - okay [name]Margot[/name] - I like this one, good mix of classical and unique, [name]Callista[/name]? [name]Camille[/name]?
[name]Natalie[/name] - I do love [name]Tally[/name] a lot, but I dont’ really like [name]Natalie[/name]
[name]Pearl[/name] - meh, very different from your other choices, good middle
[name]Rene[/name]/[name]Renee[/name] - meh
[name]Sloan[/name]/[name]Sloane[/name] - I don’t like that it has the word “slow” in it
[name]Vivienne[/name] - meh, nms [name]Zoe[/name] - great name, has a lot of spunk
I’m going to pretend that your last name is [name]Baker[/name] since it has 2 syllables and ends in -er.
BOYS:
*Ideally would love a FN that works with [name]Thomas[/name] as a MN.
[name]Alden[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Baker[/name]- I think the two syllables in each name have a nice ring to it.
[name]Anderson[/name]- I love [name]Anderson[/name]. It’s different enough from [name]Andrew[/name] but not yoo-neek in an inmature way. If that makes sense.
[name]Beckett[/name]- NMS
[name]Bennett[/name]- [name]Love[/name] [name]Bennett[/name] for the same reason that I love [name]Anderson[/name]. It’s just a little less common than [name]Benjamin[/name] and still sounds cool without being weird.
[name]Blake[/name]- NMS
[name]Bryce[/name]- NMS
[name]Calder[/name]- I think it’s too much with the 'er of your last name but I like it. [name]Calder[/name] [name]Baker[/name]- To me, I get stuck on the hard “K.” Doesn’t roll off the tongue.
[name]Desmond[/name]- [name]Love[/name] this. I think it sound fantastic as [name]Desmond[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Baker[/name]. Different but classic at the same time.
[name]Emerson[/name]- It’s OK. Not my favorite.
[name]Fletcher[/name] (If our last name ends in “er”, is this too repetitive?). Like [name]Calder[/name] in my opinion.
[b][name]Julian[/name] /b- [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name]! [name]Julian[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Baker[/name], I think it works perfectly.
[name]Leo[/name] (Too popular? Too “safe”?) Eh, not terrible, not awesome [name]IMO[/name].
[name]Lincoln[/name]- I have a neutral reaction to this and I don’t know why. It’s fine, I guess. [name]Milo[/name]- [name]Milo[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Baker[/name]- SO vintage. I love it.
[name]Reece[/name]/[name]Rhys[/name] - Meh. Not my favorite.
[name]Rowan[/name]- Sounds nice with [name]Thomas[/name] but I prefer some others on the list.
[name]Sawyer[/name] (Again…our last name ends in “er”). [name]Calder[/name]. [name]Fletcher[/name].
[name]Theodore[/name]- [name]LOVE[/name]. I’m totally biased because this name is on my short list but I thin it’s awesome.
[name]Warner[/name] (“er” issue?) [name]Love[/name] this name. I do think you have the -er issue.
[name]Warren[/name] Cute!
I think I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Julian[/name] and [name]Milo[/name] the most.
GIRLS:
(Ideally, MN [name]Amelia[/name] unless we use [name]Amelia[/name] as FN.)
[b][name]Amelia[/name] /b- [name]Love[/name]! [name]Annabelle[/name]- [name]Love[/name]! I think you could do [name]Annabelle[/name] [name]Emilia[/name] if you didn’t want the first and middle to look alike. [name]Arabelle[/name] is also another option.
[name]Blair[/name]/[name]Blaire[/name] - OK, not my favorite.
[name]Daphne[/name]- NMS but cute and I understand why people like it. I think I prefer [name]Dabney[/name].
[name]Emmeline[/name]- NMS but I do like [name]Evangeline[/name]. [name]Josephine[/name]- I think this would be great with [name]Amelia[/name]. [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Amelia[/name] or [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Emilia[/name]. [name]Margot[/name]- [name]LOVE[/name] this! I also like [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name].
[name]Natalie[/name] (Probably way too popular for our tastes…but I do love the name). Too popular and NMS.
[name]Pearl[/name]- Eh. It’s cute. Not my favorite.
[name]Rene[/name]/[name]Renee[/name]- NMS.
[name]Sloan[/name]/[name]Sloane[/name]- Cute! I’m not sure I think of it as vintage but I like it. [name]Vivienne[/name]- [name]LOVE[/name]! SO beautiful.
[name]Zoe[/name] - NMS but I prefer the [name]Zoey[/name] spelling.
Thanks! This is helpful and confirms my fears about [name]Beckett[/name] and [name]Calder[/name] and [name]Emerson[/name] - they seem a bit “trying too hard” and I am not going for that. I think we can eliminate those…thanks for your help
That’s too bad about [name]Nathaniel[/name] being out? : /
You might also like [name]Silas[/name] and [name]Hugo[/name]. [name]EDIT[/name]: I just realized though, that [name]Silas[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] doesn’t work.
For girls, you might also like:
[name]Natalia[/name]
[name]Elodie[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Just[/name] wanted to say my first and last name not only end in the same sound, they alliterate ([name]Kaitlin[/name] “[name]Keenan[/name]” for the sake of example). I usually get very positive comments on my name and I admit to sort of liking the sing-song quality it gives off. If your last name is an occupational name then yes, I would avoid [name]Fletcher[/name], [name]Sawyer[/name], etc. but I actually think [name]Warner[/name] and [name]Hudson[/name] sound great as brothers. Actually [name]Warren[/name] and [name]Lincoln[/name] are my favorites off your list.
For girls I think [name]Margot[/name] [name]Amelia[/name] and [name]Sloan/name [name]Amelia[/name] are the best with [name]Hudson[/name]. Good luck!
[name]Hi[/name] everyone! Your comments have been SO helpful to us in really focusing in on our favorites and eliminating some. Thank you very, very much! We’ve been able to narrow things down quite a bit and are left with 4 boy names and 3 girl names. Please let me know if you have further thoughts.
Let’s say our last name is Bonner, as that sounds close enough
Boys:
[name]Alden[/name]
[Family name and like a lot, but worry about the nn “[name]Al[/name]”, which I’d like to avoid]
[name]Alden[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] Bonner
[name]Desmond[/name]
[Like this a lot, “[name]Des[/name]” is a cool nn. Does it sound too “British” for an American boy? I love British names…nothing wrong with them!
I’m just not British ]
[name]Desmond[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] Bonner
[name]Julian[/name]
[We also love this one a lot and like [name]Jules[/name] and [name]Jude[/name] as nn’s. I wonder though if [name]Julian[/name] has a softer, more sensitive sound to it than
[name]Hudson[/name] and some of the others? Not that this is a bad thing…]
[name]Julian[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] Bonner
[name]Leo[/name]
[Still like this one though it might be the least exciting on our list. I still can’t seem to delete it though.]
[name]Leo[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] Bonner
Girls:
[name]Amelia[/name]
[Family name and I love it; though I sometimes worry I am choosing it MORE for the nn [name]Milly[/name] which I adore. [name]Do[/name] you get a preppy,
fashionable vibe from [name]Milly[/name] or is that just me? I always think of the designer [name]Milly[/name] ]
[name]Amelia[/name] [name]Pearl[/name] Bonner
[name]Daphne[/name]
[Really like this, sweet, spunky, different]
[name]Daphne[/name] [name]Amelia[/name] Bonner
[name]Zoe[/name]
[Have always like this a lot, so spunky.]
[name]Zoe[/name] [name]Amelia[/name] Bonner
Thanks - I [name]LOVE[/name] all of these but feel like there is something on each that does not quite work
[name]Love[/name] [name]Hugo[/name] but we don’t want another H name because we already have [name]Hudson[/name].
[name]LOVE[/name] [name]Elodie[/name] and have been trying to convince my husband but he just doesn’t like it. [name]Ruby[/name] is used in our immediate family already. [name]Natalia[/name] is cool but sounds too Russian to me for some reason.
Thanks for all these good ideas, though. They are definitely on the right track You guys are all so helpful!
Thanks! I agree the sing-song can definitely work well. I just sat with my husband and we liked [name]Lincoln[/name] and [name]Warren[/name], but decided to take them off because we leaned a bit more to some of the other names. Now you make me want to put them back on Hmm…
For boys, I like [name]Bennett[/name] or [name]Sawyer[/name]. [name]Thomas[/name] works as a middle name with [name]Sawyer[/name], although it doesn’t really sound so great with [name]Bennett[/name], in my opinion. [name]Bennett[/name] could be nicknamed [name]Ben[/name] or [name]Benny[/name], and if you are willing a nickname with a bit of a stretch, try [name]Eddy[/name]. [name]Bennett[/name] is an awesome name, but I can’t really think of any middle names that sound ‘perfect’ with it. [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Bennett[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] is a great combo! As for a girl, [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Rose[/name] or [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Josephine[/name] sounds nice to me. [name]Emma[/name], though really popular and high on the charts, is a beautiful name and would sound amazing with big brother [name]Hudson[/name]'s name! [name]Emma[/name] [name]Josephine[/name] or [name]Emma[/name] [name]Amelia[/name] sound great.
[name]Leo[/name] -love it
[name]Alden[/name] - great name but I agree that [name]Al[/name] is not great, you could call him [name]Den[/name] or [name]Denny[/name]!
[name]Julian[/name] - I like [name]Jude[/name] a lot! [name]Jules[/name] is okay. little soft for my taste but a nice name.
[name]Desmond[/name] - [name]Desi[/name] is okay
[name]Amelia[/name] - I honestly like all three of these, but [name]Amelia[/name] seems the most versatile as far as nicknames, though I think it’s also the most popular so it’s a trade off.
[name]Daphne[/name] - pretty, I guess you could call her Phina or Phiny or [name]Day[/name]
[name]Zoe[/name] - very pretty and I like the meaning (life) a lot as well
