Plum as a first name?

I really love it. With [name_f]Prune[/name_f] being fashionable in [name_f]France[/name_f], it makes me think this idea is less insane. But is it totally ridiculous? [name_m]Will[/name_m] she hate it? Can you see it on a resume? Middle name isn’t an option, as we’ll use family names, and as such, I’m looking for something unique in the first name spot.

Would love opinions!

Anyone? I was expecting a passionate response one way or the other. Would love your thoughts!

I love it and think it would be a beautiful first name! What were you thinking of paring [name_f]Plum[/name_f] with?

I really do [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] this name but I am not sure how real world usable it is.
I love it for a middle but since that isn’t an option maybe use it as a nickname?
Plumeria nn [name_f]Plum[/name_f].
Plumeria is a flower so maybe it may be more usable?

Or maybe just play with some other names to get plum as a nickname.

Honestly? My very first thought is the word ‘plump’. I picture a fat little girl and not much else, Im afraid! its one of those word names that, like [name_f]Apple[/name_f], just dont work on a person.

If you really love it I would shift it to middle position, I can hardly imagine taking a little girl with this name seriously, let alone a grown woman.

I wouldn’t say it’s totally ridiculous and I think it could work for the right kind of person… but then I think there are probably more people who would not want to be [name_f]Plum[/name_f]. I think it would be odd seeing [name_f]Plum[/name_f] as a very professional type name on a resume etc.

Plump hadn’t occurred to me. That’s certainly something to consider.

The resume one is my big worry, as I think when you go to school/work with/are around someone with a unique name, it just becomes normal, and becomes them. But with online job/school applications, I can see it being more problematic.

Middle name would be something more traditional.

Sounds more like a childhood nickname if anything. I don’t think it would age well and I definitely don’t see it on someone in the professional world. Maybe use it as a middle if you really love it?

Maybe use a family name/name in honor of a family member as a first and [name_f]Plum[/name_f] as a middle?
My brother gets referred to by his middle name and it really isn’t uncommon to be called by your middle. That will cover all your basis in terms of having a more conservative name on paper whilst still being called [name_f]Plum[/name_f].

The name won’t have to be identical to a family member, you can choose a name with the same meaning or a similar sounding name.

I think it’s totally cute, but I personally wouldn’t use it on a person [name_m]IRL[/name_m]. There is some precedent for using fruit names as given names for girls, and I don’t just mean [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f] Paltrow’s [name_f]Apple[/name_f], but it seems like it’s better off left to people whose kids will never have to worry about being taken seriously. What about [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f]? It’s a variety of plums, so you could still call her [name_f]Plum[/name_f] as a nickname.

We are using it as our “Pregnancy” name. Since every week we got sick of changing to a different fruit. I am debating on using it as a girl middle name. If not and my husband or parents don’t like it. I am sure it will still stick around as a “nickname”. I don’t think I will ever stop calling He/She “[name_f]Plum[/name_f]”.

I am pregnant about 16 weeks. My husband and I are using [name_f]Plum[/name_f] as the “name” for what we call He or She. We got sick of changing fruit every week. I have to say I might use it for a middle name. Or just keep it as a nickname if it is a boy. I say if you like the name use it. Or you can wait until your bundle of joy shows up and see if it fits. I have a feeling that you will know if it fits just by looking at your sweet baby.

I really like it! [name_f]Plum[/name_f] is cute and I think will age well, no differently to [name_f]Olive[/name_f] in my mind yet it is a lovelier sound. If you love it then I would go for it. All the best X

I think it’s really ugly. [name_f]Plum[/name_f] just doesn’t sound attractive at all, especially not as a name. But I also hate [name_f]Prune[/name_f], [name_f]Apple[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and other food names. To me it’s no different than naming your kid Bacon.

Honestly I’ll admit it right out…If I was still sorting resumes and scheduling interviews…[name_f]Plum[/name_f] probably would not make the cut. Sad as it is, sometimes that’s the way it happens. When there are 450 people with the same qualifications that apply for the same job and only 100 of them are actually getting interviewed…you go by your first impression. Being named [name_f]Plum[/name_f] is not a good first impression in my book :frowning:

I agree with this. I’m not fond of obvious food names especially ridiculous ones. I’ve seen [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] nicknamed [name_f]Plum[/name_f] before. I prefer that.

Before posting a reply, I try to think carefully about each individual name. The question I ask myself is…would I like having this name for myself in real life? As far as [name_f]Plum[/name_f] is concerned, I’m afraid the answer is NO. I wouldn’t want to be called “plump” or “sugar plum fairy” throughout my childhood. Some names are just too darn cutesy for their own good and they don’t age well. We spend most of our lives as adults so we should always remember to give our children names that are appropriate for all stages of life. [name_f]Plum[/name_f] - or [name_f]Prune[/name_f] for that matter - just don’t make the grade for me. If you love it, use it for a middle name.

Let me say that I really like word-names and I’ve been known to be a little “out there” with my taste in names.
That being said, I personally would never use [name_f]Plum[/name_f].
While I think it is very cute (more for a girl then a boy in my opinion), I don’t see it aging well at all. Like the point you brought up about seeing [name_f]Plum[/name_f] on a college application or a resume…it’s just too much for me.
Maybe it’s because I don’t like food names in general ([name_f]Olive[/name_f] has been thrown around here, not a fan), but in my opinion, [name_f]Plum[/name_f] is far better served as a nickname than someone’s first name.
No matter what name you end of choosing for your child, you could always call her [name_f]Plum[/name_f], and there is a good chance the name would stick! It could be your way of having a cute nn for your daughter while getting to use a name you love. But then your daughter can grow up and put an adult sounding name on her resume, like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]…?
Best of luck!

I like it. I think I’d rather have a more formal/serious first name on the birth certificate, but [name_f]Plum[/name_f] could make a fun nickname.

Something like:
[name_f]Pluma[/name_f] “[name_f]Plum[/name_f]”
Plumeria “[name_f]Plum[/name_f]”

names that mean “plum” or are types of Plums:
[name_f]Prunella[/name_f] “[name_f]Plum[/name_f]”
[name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] “[name_f]Plum[/name_f]”
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] “[name_f]Plum[/name_f]”
[name_u]Claude[/name_u] “[name_f]Plum[/name_f]”
[name_f]Avalon[/name_f] “[name_f]Plum[/name_f]”
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] “[name_f]Plum[/name_f]”
[name_f]Olympia[/name_f] “[name_f]Plum[/name_f]”
[name_f]Opal[/name_f] “[name_f]Plum[/name_f]”

[name_f]Plum[/name_f]…

I think this name is really sweet and wholesome. But I would use [name_f]Plum[/name_f] as a middle name only. I think [name_f]Plum[/name_f] could be considered slightly awkward on a adult. I don’t know whether Dr. [name_f]Plum[/name_f] works…? Whereas a combination like [name_f]Carolina[/name_f] [name_f]Plum[/name_f] would work and sounds pretty together. Or if you want something more fiery maybe [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] [name_f]Plum[/name_f]?

: )

I think [name_f]Plum[/name_f] is adorable as a middle name, or even as a nickname, but not as a given first name.

My grandmother’s cousin was named [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], and she was nicknamed [name_f]Plum[/name_f], because of the [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] plum variety of the fruit. I believe there is also an English journalist who is called [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], but is known as [name_f]Plum[/name_f]. (A quick Google has revealed there is indeed, her name is [name_f]Plum[/name_f] Sykes, that’s the name she goes by professionally).

Could using [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] but nicknaming [name_f]Plum[/name_f] be an option for you?!
