Pluvia?

I’ve liked Pluvia /PLU-vya/ as a guilty pleasure name for a while now. It’s not an actual name, as far as my research turned up, but I do like that it is a Latin word literally meaning rain, as the rain is very important to me personally. I really like the look/sound of the name, but the hard v in the middle of all the soft letters is throwing me off a bit. So what do you berries think of Pluvia as an actual name – usability, associations (personally I sort of associate it with [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] Plath for some reason), opinions on the name itself – and what names can you think of with similar vibes/sound/meaning?

[name_f]TIA[/name_f]

Oh, I’m so sorry but it just doesn’t sound pleasant to me at all. I love the meaning though!
What about [name_f]Talia[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], or [name_f]Audra[/name_f]…meaning heavenly rain, rainbow, and storm. There are so many beautiful names that mean rain or storm!

Thank you @mom2one2! I love it in theory but when I say it out loud the v sounds a bit harsh. I knew an [name_f]Audra[/name_f] in school years ago and I think it’s a lovely name! I also like [name_f]Iris[/name_f] but something about it doesn’t sit right with me. Thank you for the suggestions.

I can’t actually imagine a child with the name Pluvia. I automatically think of uvula, or a space like association. The name reminds me of names like [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m].

@anotheronetocome Oh dear, uvula is not a good association. Now that you mention it, I see it too, haha.

I couldn’t really see it as a first name, but I don’t think it would be too outlandish for a middle. I actually really like the v. For me it’s the p that makes it sound a bit harsh.

My cousin’s daughter’s middle name is Luvia, which is still a bit out there for me but I think it has kind of a pretty sound. No idea where they came up with it! Her first name is Hebrew so for a long time I thought maybe it was an obscure Hebrew name, but I haven’t found any info pointing in that direction. All I’ve actually found about it is that there’s a Canadian actress named Luvia, and that it’s a place in Finland.

It sounds vaguely medical to me, sorry! I do like @marie23’s suggestion of Luvia though.

I, too, love the meaning of this name! But I can’t get over the sound (both the Plu and the harsh v).
All the other suggestions here are great. Since I think the other names that sound similar are covered, here are some names that also mean rain:
[name_f]Amaya[/name_f] (night rain)
[name_f]Aqua[/name_f]
[name_f]Marina[/name_f]
[name_f]Oceane[/name_f]
[name_f]Raina[/name_f]
[name_f]Darya[/name_f] (means seas)
[name_f]Maya[/name_f]
[name_f]Mira[/name_f]
[name_f]Tulia[/name_f]
[name_f]Morwenna[/name_f]

I just discovered this word too and love it. Pluviatile too, I think.

It does sound to me like a female body part when considered as a name.

[name_f]Raine[/name_f]? [name_f]Reyna[/name_f]? [name_f]Reine[/name_f]? [name_f]Reinette[/name_f]?

Lluvia is much better! It’s lighter and sweeter, and is sans bodily associations ^^
Lluvia is the Spanish word for rain, pronounced with a Y instead of the double-L, so YOO-vee-uh, to rhyme with [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f].

There’s also the Basque Euria and the Hawaiian Lilinoe. Hebrew Reviva (though maybe too much like revive?) and Finnish [name_f]Sade[/name_f].
Lluvia or Euria, and maybe Lilinoe are my favourites

Wow @dearest, Lluvia is a great suggestion. It seems like a perfect solution to the phonetic problems that Pluvia might pose. You still get the wonderful rain meaning, and when spoken aloud it sounds like a combination of the lovely [name_f]Livia[/name_f] (which has a less than desirable meaning) and the playful, happy [name_f]Yulia[/name_f]. I also like @laugre suggestion of [name_f]Amaya[/name_f]- a girl I went to school with just used [name_f]Amaya[/name_f] for her daughter

I think it’s cute and quirky, but more as the name of a cat much like your avatar than for a human. I actually think Pluvia would make a fabulous name for a cat.

I love the meaning, but I really dislike the name itself. I feel like Pluvia is is the planet you pass on the way to visit the Vulcans.

Thanks for the suggestions and opinions! Maybe I could work it in as a middle name somewhere or as @larkub101 suggested, use it as a name for a pet. I like Luvia and Lluvia but it’s not as nice to me as a name starting with P, and I wouldn’t want to use Lluvia since I’m neither Hispanic nor do I speak Spanish. I don’t think I’d want to use a name from another language that doesn’t use English spelling (unless it is Irish, because I am Irish myself). I like [name_f]Amaya[/name_f], [name_f]Marina[/name_f], [name_f]Oceane[/name_f], Euria, and Reviva.

same… sorry!
