Pocahontas or Cleopatra?

I recently found out that through my maternal side I am related to [name_f]Pocahontas[/name_f], Nickitti, and [name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f]. Hypothetically speaking… If I wanted to honor my powhatan relations, who adopted my mother, would it be offensive to honor them since its not direct blood? and are any of these 3 names wearable today?

side-note- I’m going through and have been going through family names for a while, hence, why I have asked about soo many odd or obsolete names, please bear with me.:frowning:

[name_f]Pocahontas[/name_f]- to disney?
Nikiti- to femme fatal?
[name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f]- to bold to live up?

I think [name_f]Pocahontas[/name_f] and [name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f] are too tied to one person.

[name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f] would work as a potentially full name, with [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] as nn, but I agree; these are BIG names to live up to!

I agree that [name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f] MIGHT work, but I definitely wouldn’t go with [name_f]Pocahontas[/name_f]. Also I don’t think [name_f]Pocahontas[/name_f] was her real name was it?
I personally wouldn’t use either- they are definitely huge names to live up to.

Can I ask how you were able to trace your family back that far? I’ve done the whole family geneology thing, and the furthest I’ve gotten is the 1700’s.

I would say cleopatra would be a nice name on a birth certificate, and maybe less hard to live up to with the nn cleo or patsy

I think [name_f]Pocahontas[/name_f] is way too close to the Disney character to be useable. I could see [name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f] being used if a nickname was used the majority of the time; Otherwise, I think it would be a hard name to live with. I looked up Nikiti and only found a village in Greece, so if it’s just a place name it would probably be the best of the three.

Also, according to wikipedia (not the greatest source) [name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f] was named [name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f] [name_f]Selene[/name_f]. I feel [name_f]Selene[/name_f] would be very useable, but may be more popular than you like. It also says that [name_f]Drusilla[/name_f] may have been her daughter or granddaughter, so that would give you a more unique option.

Yeah, I was wondering this. I can see how there might be records of [name_f]Pocahontas[/name_f] as she married an English man but Kleopatra [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m] seems a hard one to prove a link to.

It is through my grandmother, she is a direct descendant of [name_f]Pocahontas[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] grandmother adopted my mother, so its not blood, but legally connected. I have had a long love/hate relationship with drusilla/drucilla/drusilda. Unfortunately, its not a very fond name of the family. Some think its too dated, but some how like cleo for cleopatra. I think MAYBE it would work as a middle.

But it just seems too weird and misplaced for me too use the names since its not direct blood and people will ask questions on where the inspiration came from…

[name_m]How[/name_m] did you figure out that you’re related to [name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f]? It’s nearly impossible to prove, isn’t it?

[name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f]/[name_f]Cleo[/name_f] is the most usable, [name_f]IMO[/name_f].

[name_f]My[/name_f] grandmother recently passed away. [name_f]My[/name_f] Aunt decided to do a lineage tree on grandma and give it to all the grand-kids to have something to remember her by. From what my Aunt said, it is through [name_f]Pocahontas[/name_f] we are related too. [name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f] is her sister or relation, so it as a connection. Cleo just seemed more usable than Pocahontas.

I appreciate all the comments, I’m just not comfortable using them. There seems to be a similar responses on the names, and I agree with you.thanks

The ancestor you are seeing in your family tree would be [name_f]Pocahontas[/name_f]'s half-sister, [name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f]. Not the ancient Egyptian [name_m]Pharaoh[/name_m].

First off, [name_f]Pocahontas[/name_f] wasn’t her real name. It was a childhood nickname meaning “little wanton”, which isn’t the most awesome thing to name your kid as an actual name. Her real name was Matoaka, and she was also known as Amonute. When she was baptised, she changed it to [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f].

Also, the [name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f] you are referring too is probably [name_f]Pocahontas[/name_f]’ half-sister, as is Nicketti.

I’m not sure why you would want to honour them specifically, but if it’s to honour your Native-American heritage, there are many other names you could use that are less tied to famous people…
