I recently came across this name and i’m falling in love w/ it, according to my research it means ’ Black Pearl’ and is of Polynesian decent. Should this be kept as a guilty pleasure, any thoughts?
Thank you.
Edit: It’s pronounced Poy- ah- rah- vah
It is a beautiful name indeed, and I love the meaning. I did a little research on the name. Some sites say it is Samoan, others say Tuvalu or Palau. The meaning remains the same across all languages though. The most verifiable sources say it is Tahitian. Other than that, Poerava is also a star in the constellation of Tucana.
Having said that, this name is beautiful. If you love it, it would be okay to use. I would always advise you to talk with a native or two to know if you can actually use it.

I’d say keep it on the list—why not?
To me, it looks like “Poor Ava” which isn’t grand… but then, it also looks like “Poe Raven” which is exquisite!
Looks like it’s got a bunch of nickname potential: [name_u]Poe[/name_u], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_f]Avie[/name_f], [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Ora[/name_f], [name_u]Rae[/name_u], etc. I love that aspect, too. It’s a cool, special name with a gorgeous meaning!

Native Tahitian here- Poerava (Po eh [ɹ]ah vah or poy [ɹ]ah vah; the letter r is flipped in Tahitian, similar to Spanish) is a very beautiful and popular female name in [name_f]Tahiti[/name_f] that means “black pearl”. It is definitely a Tahitian word and definitely not Samoan, though it may be the same or similar on other islands. [name_u]Poe[/name_u] (pronounced like poy) means “pearl” and rava is “black”. Pearls are rare annd precious stones, and Tahitian pearls, especially the black ones, are very important in the culture. They are said to ward off negative energy, grant wisdom, and can even heal a broken heart. Use it if you like it!
