Pola as a nickname for Penelope?

Okay, chances are, I’ll never get to name a daughter [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. We’re only planning to have two more children and already have names in mind for them if they both happen to be girls ([name_f]Isobel[/name_f] and [name_f]Veronica[/name_f]). However, just hypothetically speaking, if those plans were to change (we change our mind on either the number of children or our chosen names, the last pregnancy results in multiples, an accidental pregnancy, etc.), I’ve been thinking a lot about [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. More specifically, what nickname I would want to use for a daughter named [name_f]Penelope[/name_f].

I do really like [name_u]Penny[/name_u], but I’m not really sure if I love her. I do not like [name_f]Nell[/name_f] or [name_f]Nellie[/name_f] at all, although [name_f]Nella[/name_f]/[name_f]Nela[/name_f] is kinda growing on me. I’ve really been loving [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] lately, but one of the grandfathers goes by Pops, so that’s probably out of the question. While [name_f]Lola[/name_f] feels a bit of a stretch, I do think it can work. That doesn’t really matter, though, because DH thinks [name_f]Lola[/name_f] is too sexy for a little girl anyway, which I sort of agree with.

That lead to me coming up with the idea of [name_f]Pola[/name_f]. It doesn’t feel as much as a stretch as [name_f]Lola[/name_f], and looking at the entry here at Nameberry, it can be used as a nickname for [name_f]Amapola[/name_f], which coincidentally means “poppy” in Arabic.

So what do you guys think of [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], nn [name_f]Pola[/name_f]? Does it work? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like it better than [name_u]Penny[/name_u], [name_f]Nella[/name_f], or [name_f]Lola[/name_f]? Could I still use [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] even thought one of the grandpas goes by Pops?

[name_f]Pola[/name_f] is a sweet-sounding (and creative!) idea for a nickname. I haven’t heard it before but it seems plausible and I like it. My other favorite nicknames would be [name_f]Lola[/name_f], [name_f]Nell[/name_f], or [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] for a [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. To me [name_f]Lola[/name_f] seems more sweet than sexy. I think [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] is usable, but it’s always good to have backups in case you use [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and decide her nickname is too close to grandpa’s title. In which case, you have [name_f]Pola[/name_f]!

I’m quite liberal on which nicknames to use for full names ([name_f]El[/name_f]lie for Ophelia |[name_m]Ott[/name_m]i for [name_f]Elli[/name_f]ott | Peppi for Penelope) but what I usually still look for is a nickname that has at least something to do with the full name, meaning that at least one part has to also be part of the full name (sound or letters). [name_f]Pola[/name_f] is sweet but has not one letter combination that [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] does, so I do think it’s a bit far-fetched.
