To me, [name_f]Anna[/name_f] is ann-ah and [name_f]Ana[/name_f] is anh-ah.
[name_f]Anna[/name_f] could be either, but I usually default to ah-na. [name_f]Ana[/name_f] is more definitively ah-na.
I live in NY, I always pronounce it ah-nuh, like [name_f]Anna[/name_f] from Frozen, because that’s the only pronunciation I like.
I’ve known a lot of Annas though, and they’ve all pronounced their name like aaa-nuh, not like ann-uh. Like the A in apple, it’s different to how I’d say the A in [name_u]Anne[/name_u]. That’s probably an accent thing, though!
For me, [name_f]Anna[/name_f] = AN-uh (your ann-a got my vote) and [name_f]Ana[/name_f] = UH-nuh (I’m in Australia)
@quietosprey do you live in the US? [name_m]Just[/name_m] wondering if it’s because of a personal preference or cultural or accent.
Yes! I do think Ann-Uh is the more common US pronunciation. It may be because I live in an area with more spanish speakers than other regions. Unsure!
[name_f]Ann[/name_f] with an A
Mid-Atlantic US here and ANN-uh is my instinct! I’ve known many (10+) and only one who says AH-nuh so that’s probably why. I also know several Ana’s, so that’s the spelling I associate with AH-nuh. Would have no trouble at all if corrected though, and love this name so much either way!
@dandy_orchid good to know, thanks! Growing up all I knew was the “an-na” pronunciation. But now I know a couple of “ah-na”s spelt Anna. I’m trying to figure out if they chose that pronunciation because of cultural reasons or accent… It has messed with my mind!
Thank you for putting this in perspective!
