Popular name

Thoughts on [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]?
[name_m]Will[/name_m] I be forever having to justify myself that I didn’t just pick the top name off the charts, but it’s a name I’ve always loved and that she’s also named after her great-grandmother?

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]? It’s significantly less popular. [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] has a lovely [name_m]French[/name_m] flair.

I’ve thought about it and I love it as well. My fear is that people will automatically assume it’s her nickname and her full name is [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] and I (and later her) will have to correct them every time.

[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]'s statistically less popular, sure, but I wouldn’t be surprised if at least half of the little [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]'s are called [name_f]Sophie[/name_f].

[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] is lovely. I don’t think people would assume you picked two popular names out of thin air.

It’s obvious [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] is super popular, but for good reason. It’s a beautiful name. And I think [name_u]Madison[/name_u] is actually more popular than [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]… but anyways… if the name means something to you then use it. It just so happens you are having a child when these names are popular. If [name_f]Joan[/name_f] and [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] were the top names of the day, you would still go with [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] because of the personal, special meaning… right?

[name_f]Do[/name_f] it. It’s a beautiful name. Somebody had a great thread in the [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Names forum about the top ten names not being nearly as popular as we all perceive them to be.

Thanks berries. We’ve settled on this name if the baby turns out to be a girl, I’m just questioning our decision and seeing what kind of reactions people might have. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] it’s not something like “oh, another one” LOL

Gorgeous name! I don’t think popularity should deter you–unless there are already several young Sophias in your family/social group.

I am not a fan of using popular names, but family meaning trumps popularity every day of the week. Some names on my lists are in the Top 10, but they mean something, damnit. If a beautiful combination like [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] has significance to you, then you should use it.

My sister’s name is [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] (not [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]) and she doesn’t have to deal with correcting people very often actually. If it does happen, it’s most often because someone asked “Is [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] short for [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]?” rather than them just calling her [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] and having that whole awkward “Well, actually it’s [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]…” conversation a zillion times.

I would absolutely go for it! Popularity should not deter you from using a name you love - it means everyone else will love your daughter’s name too! It’s also very special to be named after a family member.
