Practical Magic - Round out my girls' list?

(I apologize in advance for the lengthy post.)

I don’t know why boys’ names/combos come so easily to me (with the exception of [name]Caspian[/name]) and girls’ names are such a struggle. I’d really love to have a solid top five for each gender, but my girls’ list is kind of a mess. I’m solid on [name]Alice[/name] [name]Willow[/name] and [name]Lucia[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]. I’m wavering between [name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Fawn[/name] and [name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Wren[/name]. And my [name]Evie[/name] ideas are all over the place, although the current front-runner is [name]Evelyn[/name]. I haven’t even begun to tackle the [name]Evie[/name] middles yet.

Actually, I do know why girls’ names are so hard for me! My personal style, especially for girls, is so fantastical, ethereal, whimsical, over-the-top – the [name]Magic[/name]. My husband’s style is more conservative. He insists that he doesn’t want a “normal” name, just something that he considers usable on an actual child. He says he likes most of my GP names in theory but they’re too much in reality – the Practical. Trying to marry the two styles and find that perfect balance – the Practical [name]Magic[/name] – is what gets my feathers all ruffled. I just can’t seem to rein myself in and be content with the results!

What I need is that perfect number five, something I can just say YES to. Something that evokes the magical imagery that makes me happy, and strikes the familiar chord that satisfies my hubby. Something that works with [name]Alice[/name], [name]Lucia[/name], [name]Ophelia[/name] and [name]Evie[/name] ([name]Evelyn[/name]?).

I’ve considered the following options, but none are just screaming I’M THE [name]ONE[/name]:

[name]Clara[/name]

    • Pros: magical, wintery, crisp…immediately makes me think of the Nutcracker, thus ballet and [name]Christmas[/name]
    • Cons: [name]Clarabelle[/name] Cow :frowning: And would definitely be a winter baby only name for me.

[name]Juliet[/name]

    • Pros: romantic, fits in the sibset…brings to mind [name]Shakespeare[/name] and the [name]Emilie[/name] [name]Autumn[/name] song
    • Cons: I loathe the name [name]Julie[/name], partly because I knew a really petty bitchy girl by that name. If light, delicate [name]Juliet[/name] got shortened to [name]Julie[/name], I would die.

[name]Freya[/name]

    • Pros: one of the few goddess names that is short (which my husband likes), simple, and intuitively pronounced, while still conveying regalia and power…I see wolves and snow and piercing grey eyes
    • Cons: for some reason, I don’t think she fits in the sibset for me. [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Freya[/name]? [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Freya[/name]? [name]Freya[/name] and [name]Evie[/name]? I just can’t see it :expressionless:

[name]Elowen[/name]

    • Pros: feels elven and ethereal, love the nature meaning, my husband actually likes it!
    • Cons: I just haven’t fallen for it the way I want to…considered [name]Elowen[/name] V— as a way to get to [name]Evie[/name], but it just didn’t take. And I’m not sure I want two E names back to back.

As you can see, I’m in a rut. Help! Give me all the practically magical suggestions you can think of, tell me what names fit with the other firsts in my sibset, sell me on one of my lukewarm options….something. @_@

Thank you for being good enough to read all this! Berries are the best. <3

I think [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Freya[/name] sound nice.

What about [name]Freya[/name] and [name]Elowen[/name], [name]Freya[/name] and [name]Ophelia[/name], [name]Freya[/name] and Illyira, [name]Freya[/name] and [name]Orion[/name]…

I think yes to [name]Freya[/name], on the grounds that I think it fits fine in all the combinations you suggest, thus negating your con

Also I don’t think [name]Juliet[/name] would get shortened to [name]Julie[/name]; I think the two names are seen as quite distinct.

I actually really love [name]Freya[/name] with [name]Ophelia[/name], [name]Lucia[/name], and [name]Alice[/name]. I think it goes beautifully. I also quite like [name]Soraya[/name] with your other names.

[name]How[/name] about:

[name]Isadora[/name]
[name]Thalia[/name] – thay-lee-ah
[name]Phaedra[/name]
[name]Avalon[/name]
[name]Calypso[/name]
[name]Cliona[/name]
[name]Edda[/name] – eh-dah
Epona
[name]Etain[/name]
[name]Fauna[/name]
[name]Morna[/name]
[name]Rosana[/name]
[name]Silvia[/name]/[name]Sylvia[/name]
[name]Sylvana[/name]/[name]Silvana[/name]
[name]Una[/name]
[name]Zenobia[/name]

As for [name]Evie[/name] names that I think could fit:

[name]Doveva[/name]
Edeva
[name]Evadne[/name] – ee-vahd-nee
[name]Evanthe[/name] – ee-vahn-thee
[name]Evetta[/name]
[name]Geneva[/name]
[name]Genevieve[/name]
[name]Vevina[/name]

Are any of those magical?

I actually quite like [name]Freya[/name] with [name]Alice[/name]

[name]Elowen[/name] is on my list as well. It’s magical, its whimsical, its usable, its wearable, and she will be the only [name]Elowen[/name] in her class. Everything i love in a name. I know you arent completely sold on it, but I think [name]Elowen[/name] V is an interesting way to get to [name]Evie[/name] and I like it.

Other names you might like-

[name]Anastasia[/name]
[name]Cornelia[/name]
[name]Athena[/name]
[name]Waverly[/name]
[name]Penelope[/name]

I realize a lot of these may not be your taste, but I hope at least one sticks out to you. If you’re stuck on [name]Evelyn[/name], what about [name]Evelyn[/name] [name]Faye[/name]? I think thats Practical [name]Magic[/name]

[name]Clara[/name] and [name]Juliet[/name] are two of my favorites! And [name]Alice[/name]!

What about [name]Evie[/name] just as it is? I know one who’s full first name is [name]Evie[/name] (ehh-vee) and I’ve always liked it.
Others:
[name]Oceania[/name]
[name]Desdemona[/name]
[name]Imogen[/name] (a name recently suggested to me)

[name]How[/name] about:

[name]Colette[/name]
[name]Cosette[/name]
[name]Jael[/name]
[name]Evadne[/name]
[name]Rhea[/name]
[name]Esme[/name]
[name]Josette[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name]
[name]Flora[/name]
[name]Brigid[/name]/[name]Bridget[/name]

Oh man, everything I wrote was just deleted. I hate that so much.

Starting over:

[name]Clara[/name]- it’s a sweet, quiet little name. Very pretty. It sounds lovely with all the girls, but I feel like it’s almost too quiet beside your boys’ names.

[name]Juliet[/name]- if you don’t like [name]Julie[/name], I’d pass on it, because people are going to want to call her [name]Julie[/name]. You can insist on [name]Juliet[/name] until you’re blue in the face, and you’re going to get those stubborn ones that won’t budge, or [name]Juliet[/name] herself may want to be a [name]Julie[/name].

[name]Freya[/name]- this is one of my most adored names, and one I can’t use. [name]Freya[/name] is one of the greatest names. Feminine, powerful, the imagery is just gorgeous… I love it! I do agree that it seems to overpower [name]Alice[/name], [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Evie[/name]. It sounds great with [name]Ophelia[/name] and all the boys though!

[name]Elowen[/name]- this one is practical magic. It’s dripping in magic, but the sounds feel comfortable and practical, because they’re used in other more common names. I can understand not falling for a name, as perfect as it seems, but from the outside looking in, this just feels like the most perfect name for you.

Loving dantea’s suggestions, especially [name]Isadora[/name], [name]Thalia[/name], [name]Phaedra[/name], [name]Avalon[/name] and [name]Calypso[/name]. [name]Evadne[/name], [name]Evanthe[/name] and [name]Genevieve[/name] are three of my favorite “[name]Evie[/name]” names, as is Everild, though that may be too much magic and not enough practical.

I think some of the names in my signature might suit the “practical magic” criteria. I don’t remember what all is in there, so I may suggest some that are listed there already. Sorry.

edit: and a bunch of other great suggestions just popped up while I typed this, twice. Sigh!

[name]Clara[/name] and [name]Clarabelle[/name] are totally different. Anyway, it’s the -belle part that makes [name]Clarabelle[/name] a cow name [name]IMO[/name], not [name]Clara[/name].

I have never heard [name]Juliet[/name] shortened to [name]Julie[/name]. I don’t think that’s a concern.

[name]Freya[/name] sounds fine with all of those names.

I don’t see [name]Elowen[/name] V___ nn [name]Evie[/name] working out. Honestly, I think [name]Evie[/name] works fine as a stand-alone name anyway.

[name]Alice[/name] [name]Willow[/name]
[name]Lucia[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]
[name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Wren[/name]
[name]Evelyn[/name] [name]Fae[/name]
[name]Clara[/name] [name]Fawn[/name]

I rather like [name]Freya[/name] with your other girls names. I particularly like [name]Freya[/name] and [name]Alice[/name]. They seem like practical magic sisters. [name]Freya[/name] hits a perfect balance of “normal” but magical.

sorceress - You think [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Freya[/name] go together? Hm…I guess I always looked at it like [name]Alice[/name] belongs in that vintage-y sort of sibset and [name]Freya[/name] is so distinctly mythological. I like your pairings, but unfortunately Illyria and [name]Orion[/name] are firmly on the GP list, courtesy of Hubby veto power.

vch - See above, I always thought [name]Freya[/name] clashed in style with the other names. As for [name]Juliet[/name] getting shortened to [name]Julie[/name] or even [name]Jules[/name], unfortunately I’ve seen it happen…and that would just absolutely kill the name for me.

dantea - [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Freya[/name] and [name]Ophelia[/name] share too many sounds? I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Soraya[/name]…she was on my shortlist for a middle for [name]Alice[/name], but Hubby vetoed the entire list, including [name]Sora[/name] :frowning: [name]Thalia[/name], [name]Phaedra[/name], [name]Avalon[/name], [name]Fauna[/name], and all of the [name]Silvie[/name]'s are magical! I love the look, sound, and feel of [name]Phaedra[/name], but I hesitate because her myth is so violently tragic. [name]Avalon[/name] was vetoed by Hubby’s “no place names” rule ::sulks:: [name]Fauna[/name] is an interesting idea if I go with [name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Wren[/name]. Hubs actually loves [name]Isadora[/name], but we have a friend named [name]Isa[/name] so he won’t use it. I do like your [name]Evie[/name] suggestions, especially [name]Genevieve[/name]. Thanks so much!!

[name]Rhia[/name] - wow, I love your description of [name]Elowen[/name]! I’m definitely adding some points to her column after that. I just don’t know what I would pair her with…the only V names I seem to like are [name]Vashti[/name] (adore this name but concerned about the reaction from friends and family…some people consider her a Biblical “bad girl”), [name]Victoria[/name] (only tentatively like this name. It’s too popular and I have an acquaintance with this name so it could be awkward), [name]Viola[/name] (too musical instrument?) / [name]Violet[/name] (too common?) / [name]Violette[/name] (too French for Hubby to handle?), and [name]Vivienne[/name] (complicated personal reasons why this could be a bad idea). It’s just so problematic @_@
I actually love most of your suggestions! [name]Luna[/name], [name]Evangeline[/name], and Avonlea are on my GP list (darn that Hubby veto power!), we know an [name]Anastasia[/name], a [name]Fiona[/name], an [name]Aurora[/name]/[name]Rory[/name], and a [name]Faye[/name], so those unfortunately won’t work. [name]Phoebe[/name] is an intriguing idea, I never really considered her before! [name]Do[/name] you think she’s too similar to [name]Ophelia[/name]? Same with [name]Odessa[/name]. [name]Lyra[/name] is actually one of the only three names my husband has ever voluntarily suggested AND [name]Philip[/name] Pullman’s trilogy is in my top five booklist…but I have not been able to fall for the name! I want to so badly, but all I hear is “liar” :frowning: You have given me some really great suggestions though! Thank you!

boyandgirl - Thanks! I agree

reesespieces - I really want [name]Evie[/name] to have a full name to back her up. I know some people really go for the the nickname vibe, but I’m always drawn to long, elaborate, feminine names…it’s my husband who likes them short! For me, [name]Evie[/name] on her own is not enough, I would always assume it was a nickname for something else. Thank you for your suggestions! [name]Oceania[/name] is gorgeous and thoroughly magical, but Hubs will never go for it.

seazuno - Thanks! [name]Cosette[/name] is adorable, but I have trouble picturing her as a grown woman. [name]Esme[/name] and [name]Rhea[/name] are cute, and I actually really love [name]Thea[/name] from your signature. [name]Do[/name] you pronounce it THEE-ah or [name]TAY[/name]-ah?

redwoodfey - Oh, it drives me CRAZY when that happens! I have a new laptop and the touchpad is like an inch to the left from what I’m used to…so I keep hitting it with my wrist when I type, resulting in all manner of wacky doings. I feel your pain!
Thank you so much for the analysis! It great of you to take the boys’ names into account, I don’t know why I didn’t do that this time around. You’re right, [name]Juliet[/name] is too risky given my loathing for [name]Julie[/name], and [name]Clara[/name] is rather meek next to [name]Zion[/name] and [name]Gideon[/name]. [name]Freya[/name] is the exact opposite, perfect with the boys and a little jarring with the girls. I need something to bridge the gap, and [name]Elowen[/name] seems to be perfect with both…but there’s the whole [name]Evie[/name] issue to consider.
I loved reading your suggestion list! They are definitely more magical than practical…Eirwen, [name]Fairuza[/name], Lysandra, [name]Corisande[/name], and Nimue are my favorites, especially the latter two. I think Nimue could potentially fit, especially since I could say she’s honoring my sister [name]Naomi[/name]…it would just be a matter of convincing Hubby. I doubt I could get away with [name]Corisande[/name]…but she’s made of epic win, and [name]Cora[/name] does work well with the other girls’ names. [name]Viola[/name] is one I’ve considered because of the Shakespearean connection, but I’m concerned that she’s too associated with the musical instrument. I’ve actually never considered [name]Bianca[/name], [name]Rhiannon[/name], or [name]Tressa[/name]…I’ll have to mull these over. [name]Bianca[/name] does have the [name]Shakespeare[/name] link, a [name]Rhiannon[/name] authored one of my favorite books and [name]Rhia[/name] is a cute nickname, and [name]Tressa[/name] is just pretty and fun to say. I love [name]River[/name] from your [name]Evie[/name] list! It adds another layer of awesome, a la Firefly. Thanks for the fantastic ideas!

thatkathryngirl - I’m hoping [name]Clarabelle[/name] Cow is not as familiar to today’s kids as she was to my generation. I have heard [name]Juliet[/name] shortened to [name]Julie[/name] and the thought just makes me cringe. I think I’m going to let that option go. I do prefer [name]Evie[/name] as a nickname for something longer, as explained above, but I appreciate your feedback!

kala_way - ooh [name]Clara[/name] [name]Fawn[/name] is darling! And I do love [name]Evelyn[/name] [name]Fae[/name]…maybe with this spelling it won’t seem as much like we’re using the name of an acquaintance?

dindlee - After reading everyone’s feedback, [name]Freya[/name] is definitely growing on me, especially with [name]Alice[/name]. I’ll have to mull it over some more.

Thank you everyone for your feedback and suggestions! I always feel better when I know the Berries are on the case, because it’s sure to result in some great ideas!

[name]Juliet[/name]: Really like. So pretty.
[name]Clara[/name]: Like. Have never heard of [name]Clarabelle[/name] Cow. [name]Clara[/name] [name]Barton[/name] is a great namesake.
[name]Elowen[/name]: [name]Love[/name] “wen” names and this is a wonderful choice but am tired of “E” names right now; half of the babies I know lately have been given “E” names.
[name]Freya[/name] - Dislike, not exactly sure why. [name]Just[/name] seems odd, not a fan of “F” names.

I agree [name]Genevieve[/name] is beautiful. You could use “[name]Jenna[/name]” to satisfy your husband, or [name]Neve[/name] is my preferred nn.

First, I don’t think [name]Juliet[/name] will be shortened to [name]Julie[/name]. I know a few Juliets that just go by [name]Juliet[/name], no nickname at all. I think you’d be fine! And a lot of people wouldn’t just assume a nickname anyway, so you could just tell them that it’s “just [name]Juliet[/name]” if they do.

[name]How[/name] about [name]Evelina[/name] for [name]Evie[/name]? I think it’s practical, but has a magical sound to it, and [name]Evie[/name] as a nickname makes it even more practical.

I think you could get away with the more “impractical” choices as middle names. For example [name]Alice[/name] Illyria would be wonderful!

Suggestions;

[name]Iliana[/name]
[name]Eira[/name] ▹ Or [name]Gwyneira[/name]?
[name]Marina[/name]
[name]Persis[/name]
[name]Arianwen[/name] ▹ nickname of [name]Ari[/name], [name]Winnie[/name], [name]Annie[/name]?
[name]Ottoline[/name]
[name]Gwendolen[/name] ▹ nickname of [name]Gwen[/name], [name]Dolly[/name], [name]Wendy[/name]?
[name]Isaline[/name]
[name]Alethea[/name]
[name]Rosalind[/name]
[name]Belle[/name] ▹ [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Belle[/name] would be so cute together!

Oh, and I think Alice and Freya go wonderfully together! They’re very “British” imo

I’m so tired (it’s late in [name]Italia[/name]!) but I wanted to sneak in and comment…

I can absolutely see you and Hubs with a [name]Freya[/name], much more so than a [name]Genevieve[/name] or [name]Juliet[/name]. [name]Clara[/name] is lovely too, have you read the [name]Heidi[/name] books? Anyway, back to [name]Freya[/name]. [name]Freya[/name]'s strong and beautiful, courageous and enchanting, just like her would be Mama. I think it’s got all the practical magic you’re looking for. It’s recognisable and usable, yet different. I like it spelled the traditional way better… But I get that the simplified version might go over easier in [name]America[/name].
[name]Juliet[/name]'s pretty watered down to me, I hear it so often. But I do live that you mentioned the gorgeous [name]Emilie[/name] [name]Autumn[/name] song (she sang it last time I saw her live, it was awesome!). Maybe it’s not quite as generic over there as it is in [name]England[/name]? It’s a petty name, and nickname [name]Jules[/name] is sweet.
I’m not a big [name]Genevieve[/name] fan, and I’ve tried her on time and time again. Where did Annevieve go? It was gorgeous! And [name]Genoveva[/name] and [name]Guinevere[/name] strikes me as more fitting for your wee li’l witchlet…

I don’t have any good suggestions, but I’ll try to think of some when the hot air cools down and the mosquitoes give up eating [name]Dita[/name] and myself. I am typing this on my phone with a net over my head, that’s how much I love you Sessha! xoxox

iams - I had forgotten all about [name]Clara[/name] [name]Barton[/name]! Thanks for the reminder, she was pretty awesome. I hear what you’re saying about the E names, they’ve really grown in popularity. I too love the -wen ending…If I ending up using something else to get the [name]Evie[/name] nickname, [name]Elowen[/name] would definitely be [name]Winnie[/name] over [name]Ella[/name]. [name]Genevieve[/name] is pretty, but [name]Evie[/name] would be the only nickname I’d use, although [name]Neve[/name] is really cute.

sapphires - [name]Evelina[/name] is really pretty, although I almost prefer [name]Evelyn[/name]. Oh you don’t know how much I wanted [name]Alice[/name] Illyria!!! Hubby wouldn’t hear of it :frowning: He is more lenient on middle names, but not by much. [name]Gwyneira[/name] is another one that I was madly in love with, but succumbed to the Hubby veto. From your suggestions, [name]Gwendolen[/name] stands out to me…I love the idea of [name]Wendy[/name] for the [name]Peter[/name] [name]Pan[/name] link and another [name]Winnie[/name] option. I’m glad you like [name]Freya[/name] in the sibset, I’m so topsy-turvy when it comes to her…

otterlicious - You are so sweet! I do feel quite loved, thank you for braving the bugs for little ol’ me  I loved [name]Clara[/name] in the [name]Heidi[/name] books, that’s another association that I’d forgotten all about! You’re so right about [name]Freya[/name], she resonates with me far more than [name]Juliet[/name] or [name]Genevieve[/name]. I think I’m going to be brave and try her out with Hubby. Ooooh, [name]Emilie[/name] [name]Autumn[/name], don’t you just love her?? Such a powerful, emotive, expressive voice, and her lyrics are pure poetry, even the dark angry songs. I’ve been known to listen to Shalott on repeat for an hour at a time >> Annevieve got the axe…she was “too French” -- I’ve considered [name]Guinevere[/name], but she just doesn’t resonate with me, especially after reading The Mists of [name]Avalon[/name]… Thank you again, darling! I hope you enjoy your time in [name]Italia[/name] and that the bugs leave you and Ditaroo alone!

I actually think [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Ophelia[/name] could work. My dh vetoes everything, it seems, or [name]Phoebe[/name] would be one of my top names. I love the sounds, and for some reason the spelling itself is just attractive to me.

[name]Phoebe[/name] is a strong name to me. It just feels so inviting, and strong willed and brave. It feels innocent. I envision a little girl with her hair blowing in the wind, running freely through fields of wildflowers. A little girl as graceful and whimsical as her name.

I have recently been warming up to [name]Clara[/name]. I think its quite pretty.

Some other options for you- (i apologize for any repeats)

[name]Merida[/name]
[name]Estella[/name]
Stellara
[name]Azalea[/name]
[name]Coraline[/name]
[name]Arianwen[/name]
[name]Twyla[/name]
[name]Gwendolyn[/name]
Gwenllian
[name]Niamh[/name]
[name]Maeve[/name]
[name]Callista[/name]
[name]Calixta[/name]
[name]Celeste[/name]
[name]Gwyneira[/name]

I pn [name]Lyra[/name] like [name]Lee[/name]-ruh, which i prefer over lie-ruh. Something to think about.

Also i was thinking a few other ways to get to evie could be [name]Geneva[/name], [name]Genoveva[/name] or [name]Everly[/name].

Im actually really loving [name]Everly[/name]. It feels magical to me in a way.

In the meantime I will scour the internet for possible v names as a middle for [name]Elowen[/name].

Possible suggestions for [name]Elowen[/name]-

[name]Elowen[/name] [name]Vera[/name]
[name]Elowen[/name] [name]Veda[/name]
[name]Elowen[/name] [name]Valerie[/name]
[name]Elowen[/name] [name]Vittoria[/name]
[name]Elowen[/name] [name]Viviana[/name]
[name]Elowen[/name] [name]Valencia[/name]
[name]Elowen[/name] [name]Valentina[/name]
[name]Elowen[/name] [name]Vanessa[/name]
[name]Elowen[/name] [name]Vanya[/name]
[name]Elowen[/name] [name]Verity[/name]
[name]Elowen[/name] [name]Vespera[/name]

[name]Just[/name] some ideas. I love [name]Verity[/name] and [name]Vespera[/name].

Oh, isn’t Shallot amazing? I love her wildly. [name]Lucky[/name] for me, [name]Dita[/name] loves her as well, at least Enchant and [name]Lace[/name], and her breathtaking take on O Mistress Mine… beautiful. I did play I want my innocence back the other day and she waved with her wee little arms… But Husband thought it was weird. Go figure.

Why is Annevieve more French than [name]Genevieve[/name]?

Suggestions for the practical magical couple:
[name]Helena[/name]/[name]Helene[/name] - this is he first name that comes to mind when I hear your description of what you and Hubby wants. It’s twice Shakesperarian, once Potterian, it’s mythological ([name]Helen[/name] of [name]Troy[/name] and an Amazon), astronomical (one of [name]Saturn[/name]'s moons), it’s a butterfly! It’s sheer awesomeness due to the wonderfully weird, beautiful and enchanting [name]Helena[/name] Bonham [name]Carter[/name]. In Ancient Greece they actually called the phenomenon St [name]Elmo[/name]'s [name]Fire[/name] [name]Helena[/name].
Ainsel - faery like creature in English folklore
Alaida
[name]Belinda[/name] - “bright serpent”. Various literary references.
