[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all, I wasn’t sure whether or not this is the right place to ask this, or if I should at all, but I finally decided to just go for it. I was wondering whether anyone has been to pre-pregnancy counselling with an OB/GYN before?
[name_f]My[/name_f] DH and I spoke to my GP about starting TTC and as I do have a medical condition that can make pregnancy and birth difficult, she has referred me to the OB for the pre-pregnancy counselling (which I had never heard of before).
I’m a bit nervous and unsure about what to expect. The only other person who knows we’ve been preparing for TTC this year is my Mum, so I haven’t been able to talk to anyone besides her about it.
Thankyou!
[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t be nervous! The counseling, at least in my experience, is just conversation with a medical professional who has the knowledge to answer some questions you might have about how pregnancy and birth can go, given your condition. I was in a similar situation, and now I’m just a few weeks away from delivering healthy twins. I ended up speaking with two different genetic counselors, my OB/GYN, and a fertility specialist in the course of all this, but have had a wonderful pregnancy. Counseling is a great place to start. Good luck!
It’s never a bad idea to go to your doctor before TTC to get everything checked out. It is also a good time to ask any questions and make sure you’re physically prepared (immunizations, etc). Another thing to consider, if you’re thinking about doing any genetic testing, do it before TTC, to alleviate some of the worry. I really wish I’d known I was negative for some genetic disorders BEFORE getting pregnant, I think it would have decreased my stress level a lot. Knowledge from a professional is always the best - avoid the Google!
Thank-you both, that eases my mind a bit!
@mermaiden6, Congratulations! It’s good to know about the success stories, instead of the negative ones the doctors told me
@moonkai, I had never even thought about doing genetic testing, so I’ll definitely ask about that
