Predictions on Wesley?

[name_f]My[/name_f] SO and I don’t agree on many names, but [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] is one of them. He prefers [name_m]Westley[/name_m] but I noticed that this version is only popular in the US and we live outside the US.

I also know that [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] is well established as a name but is seeing another rise in popularity. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it is “safe” to choose this name now or will it be something in the top 20 or so in the future?

Also, side note that you guys might appreciate:

Summary

We first took note of it from the [name_f]Princess[/name_f] [name_f]Bride[/name_f], only to find out that his name was spelled [name_m]Westley[/name_m]. After looking it up on Wikipedia, I found out that the same actor plays [name_u]Robin[/name_u] Hood. Our son’s name is [name_u]Robin[/name_u]. So we would have a [name_u]Robin[/name_u] and [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] … almost as an homage to [name_u]Cary[/name_u] Elwes :open_mouth: )

First of all, [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] and [name_u]Robin[/name_u] are my favourite boys names, so I LOVE your taste.
I do predict that [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] will become a bit more popular, since he has a unique but familiar, and slightly romantic sound that I could see becoming desired. However, I don’t think he’ll become overly common, as in, one in every class. Honestly, I think [name_m]Westley[/name_m] sounds a bit more trendy and I would predict him to rise more- [name_u]West[/name_u]- names are really in right now, as are strong, nature themed names for boys. I also think that many people considering [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] would opt out for the same reason as you, and go with [name_m]Westley[/name_m] instead.
As a fellow [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] lover, and also someone who really, really does not want to use a popular name, I would still use [name_u]Wesley[/name_u]!

Thank you for your analysis! I think you are spot on. I am going to keep my eyes out for the 2024 lists. Also, I saw your profile and we have a lot of similar name likes

I have considered [name_u]Wesley[/name_u], I think it’s a great name and I love the nn [name_m]Wes[/name_m]. I do prefer [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] over [name_m]Westley[/name_m]. I don’t think this name will get annoyingly popular or trendy, but will always be one of those classic names that fits in nicely.

[name_u]Wesley[/name_u] is a charming name!

It is difficult to predict its popularity - I’m outside of the US, and while I haven’t met a [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] yet, it does fit the vibe of some of the other ‘recently popular’ boys names (the ‘American’, surname-y feel of names like [name_u]Hudson[/name_u], [name_u]Hunter[/name_u], [name_u]Carter[/name_u], [name_u]Cooper[/name_u], [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u], Riley; the same ending as names like [name_u]Finley[/name_u], [name_u]Oakley[/name_u], Riley). I can see it increasing in popularity, but at least where I am, not all the way to the top 20 just yet

I know quite a few little Wesley’s under the age of 4, so personally I do feel its rising and will continue to rise.

With that being said I really do love it! Its such a soft yet handsome boys name. (And I love the [name_f]Princess[/name_f] [name_f]Bride[/name_f] connection!)

Good to know! Where are you based if you don’t mind me asking?

Yes, it hasn’t hit the top of the charts for my country either, but I am thinking it will within the next few years because of its popularity in the US and [name_f]Canada[/name_f]. We’ll see!

It is nice that it is a classic name. If it becomes popular then I would just see it as naming your son [name_u]William[/name_u]. Top 10 forever but a great name.

Im pnw region of the US

[name_u]Robin[/name_u] and [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] work so well together for brothers.

I would say (as the mum of an Eleanor) that if you love the name, it honestly doesn’t matter how popular it gets. It’s still a great name and it just means that other people agree with you.

I really like [name_u]Robin[/name_u] & [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] together!

I don’t have much of a preference on [name_m]Westley[/name_m] vs. [name_u]Wesley[/name_u]. One question to ask is if you would ever call him [name_m]Wes[/name_m] vs. [name_u]West[/name_u]. I know someone named [name_m]Westley[/name_m] who goes by [name_u]West[/name_u] sometimes, so if you like that nickname, then [name_m]Westley[/name_m] might gain some appeal

It might see a rise in popularity, but I don’t think it will break the top 30. Plus, names today are so much more spread out that the top 10 today don’t have nearly as many people per name as names in the top 10 twenty-plus years ago.

I think you should go for Wesley/Westley!

Ok but I changed my mind, I have a slight preference for [name_m]Westley[/name_m] because I think it looks nicer when it is written out :joy: my opinion doesn’t matter though lol.

I think that [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] is getting more popular as is [name_m]Weston[/name_m] which is similar in spelling and sound. So [name_m]Wes[/name_m] as a nickname is definitely on the rise. I still think it’s not going to be a top 10 name in the near future. So if you love it and it fits well then go for it!

I think [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] and [name_u]Robin[/name_u] fit really well together! Such a cool fact two about the two names and princess bride

I love [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] so much. I know [name_m]Westley[/name_m] gets a lot of love from princess bride but I can’t help thinking it’s someone saying [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] with a speech impediment.

While popular, I don’t think it will ever reach Aiden/Noah/Jacob levels

[name_u]Wesley[/name_u] and [name_u]Robin[/name_u] make a most handsome duo! Good luck

[name_u]Robin[/name_u] and [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] are absolutely perfect names for brothers! They’re so gorgeous—and gorgeous together!

I do prefer the streamlined [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] to (the likely often misspelled and misheard) [name_m]Westley[/name_m]. I think a [name_m]Westley[/name_m] would have a lifetime of correcting people, “It’s [name_m]Westley[/name_m], not [name_u]Wesley[/name_u], actually.” And anyhow I like the warmth and look of the non-T version!

Absolutely grand names. 100% yes!

I agree, I prefer it without the ‘t’. Both in sound and aesthetics!

I really like [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] and [name_m]Westley[/name_m]. As you noted, [name_m]Westley[/name_m] is more commonly used in the states but it’s not that common where I live. I don’t know any boys under the age of 20 named [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] or [name_m]Westley[/name_m]. I know one young teenager who has the middle name of [name_u]Wesley[/name_u], so for me popularity is not an issue at all. Personally, I like the [name_m]Westley[/name_m] spelling and I would use [name_u]West[/name_u] as the nickname instead of [name_m]Wes[/name_m]. As for [name_u]Robin[/name_u] and [name_m]Westley[/name_m], I don’t think it would be a big deal really, maybe a few people might notice but I wouldn’t have if you hadn’t pointed it out.

I named my first daughter a name that ranked in the high 200s the year of her birth and there are 2 others in her year at school. Popularity can be a funny thing and not always easy to predict regionally, which is really what you want. I love my daughter’s name and it totally suits her but I was very concerned with popularity naming her, and didn’t consider other names that were “too popular,” and now, 6 years later, we’ve never met children with any of those “too popular” names. [name_m]Just[/name_m] go with a name you love that will stand the test of time.

We are now expecting baby #3, and popularity is really not much of a concern. [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] is one of our top choices for a boy, also inspired by The [name_f]Princess[/name_f] [name_f]Bride[/name_f] :). [name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I both felt the [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] spelling was more straightforward and phonetic. I actually always thought the character was [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] until I looked it up- that’s how it sounds in the movie to me.

That is really insightful. Thank you. Nice to meet a fellow Welsey fan!
