Procrastination as it's finest

this may be a long post. Thanks for your patience. Ok so TTC baby 3 in a few months time.

Already thinking of baby names and we will be going with Lawrence with the NN Lawrie for a boy. Mostly we will be calling him Lawrie.

My dilemma is the middle name spot. Anything we come up with sounds either like one big surname ( as we have used Lawrence which is also a surname) we prefer this version and it’s sticking.
Or the middle name we like just doesn’t seem quite right??

Here are our middle names and I’ve done pros/cons

  1. Lawrence Arlo
    Pros
Arlo would be honouring me and my name. It’s literally the middle letters or my name. I think it has a nice flow.
    Cons
What is really putting me off is the fact that the name just feels too made up for us? Like it’s not really a name lol? And there is no clear meaning or history of the name which is important to us.

  2. Lawrence Ivar
    Pros
Ivar is Scandinavian so honours my partner’s ancestry. I think Ivar is so handsome and unexpected.
    Cons
A lot of my respected close family members really don’t like the name. They think of Ivar the boneless Viking. ( I thought he was quite interesting myself)

  3. Lawrence Jude
    Pros
It has the best flow. It’s classy and handsome.
    Cons
It’s expected safe option perhaps not very exciting?

  4. Lawrence Rex
    Pros
Rex has a fantastic meaning. Both names are Latin and I love the Latin names.
    Cons
Is Lawrence and Rex just too stylistically different? I e classy and trendy?

  5. Lawrence Fraser
    Pros
Fraser again is honouring partners Scottish/Scandinavian roots. It is also warm and friendly.
    Cons
Both Lawrence and Fraser are surnames and just sound way too surnamey.

We do like shorter middle name spots.
George and Theo are out of the question as they are our other boys MN.
At the moment I’m very drawn to Lawrence Ivar… Despite being affected by people’s reception to the name.

As you can see I am probably over thinking and driving myself and everyone else crazy lol.
Help.

Thanks for reading this far, if you have made it haha.

Oh and our surname is m@ckenzïe so you can have an idea of full name.

Lawrence [name_u]Jude[/name_u] Mackenz*e is my favorite. There’s something irresistible about [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] and [name_u]Jude[/name_u] together.

My favourite is [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Ivar[/name_m]!! So handsome and unexpected but still feels balanced. Whilst I haven’t heard of [name_m]Ivar[/name_m] the Boneless, names with historical stories are the coolest!! It seems like it ticks all of your boxes. [name_m]Don[/name_m]’t worry about others opinions, it’s a middle name and so they won’t have to call him it very often. [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] would be my next pick, i love the connection with yours!

how about spelling it [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] or [name_m]Iver[/name_m] if the association is too strong? xx

good luck

Thanks for the reply. It’s so hard to chose.

Thanks for the reply. I’m really liking Lawrence Ivar it’s a little bit different but not too different. I don’t mind the Ivor spelling either but would worry that they may pronounce it as Eye-Vor whereas I like Eye-Ver
Ivar the boneless was a Viking who supposedly could not use his legs. There is a great TV show called funnily enough the Vikings which depicts Ivar the boneless character well. He is a bit of an ambiguous figure in history. But had a great tactical mind and perhaps was renowned for being a bit war mongering.

I vote for [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Ivar[/name_m]!

I think it’s a very strong name and a middle name is a fun way of honoring things in your life. Whether that’s after an important person or general cultural ancestry.

If I were in your position I would be more concerned about my family members opinions if it were their first name. Since that’s what they’d be calling him; however, I’d likely name him whatever I wanted in the end anyways.

Anyways, I think going for a middle name that feels good to you is worth it! I understand wanting to go for something safe like [name_u]Jude[/name_u] (which is my second favorite)

You could always shortlist two middle names and take them with you! See which one fits once your lil babe is born (I know it’s early & not even TTC just yet but still )

Edit: I love the show Vikings too so I thought of Ivar but not of his character more of how cool his name is in general!

Thanks so much. You are right I think ultimately I shouldn’t be so sensitive to people’s opinions but it’s always nice when someone shares your joy in a name I think. Seriously at this rate I may just put two names in a hat and let one of my boys pick or something haha. ( I have two older boys) or maybe my dad can pick. That way grandad picked his name.

The show is fantastic isn’t it. And [name_m]Ivar[/name_m] really is such a cool name I agree. I think my mum was a bit scared of his character so perhaps that’s her association with the show lol. Although she did enjoy the series.

They’re all good options. I like [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] best because of the connection to you :ok_hand:and it’s a cool contrast to the formal [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u]. You’d always be able to explain the connection to you to the child. It’s a known name as far as I’m concerned, not made up. [name_m]Fraser[/name_m] would be my least favourite.

Thank you for your input. Yeah [name_m]Fraser[/name_m] isn’t looking too good at the moment lol.

Of course! I get that feeling lol. Maybe see what people would chose if they got to pick and see how that feels. It could be a fun experiment and they could give options you hadn’t thought of.

I was too young to help with my younger brother (18 months apart) but I know I would’ve had so much fun with that!

Yes I totally understand the association with the character. I feel like that whole show the characters were dynamic and it was a completely different social structure and time lol. So it can seem worse than it actually is. Either way cool show and fun name

The actor who actually plays [name_m]Ivar[/name_m] I think is fantastic and happens to be the name of my second born lol he is [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_u]Anderson[/name_u] ( the actor) we just liked [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] though in general.

Another great name  it’s definitely a classic

I also think there’s no rush. I decided on my younger son’s middle name months after his birth and ended up going with an option I hadn’t considered when pregnant.

Oh wow that’s interesting! Did the names you have planned just not suit him I take it?

Lawrence [name_u]Rex[/name_u] sounds a bit awkward, especially with your last name. [name_f]My[/name_f] favourite is [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Fraser[/name_m], followed by [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_u]Arlo[/name_u].

Thanks it’s good to get feedback. [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] Arlô is proving pretty popular yep.

Best of luck in your TTC journey! [name_m]Just[/name_m] like everyone else, I adore [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_u]Jude[/name_u] and [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] [name_m]Ivar[/name_m]! I think they both have great flow, especially with your last name. I might be the only one to also second [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_u]Rex[/name_u]. To me, it has great flow with the rest of his name, and the contrast of naming styles is refreshing and interesting in the best way. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helped!

Thanks so much. They definitely seem to be top contenders at the moment. [name_f]Glad[/name_f] to see some love for [name_u]Rex[/name_u] too.

I really like the flow of [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], but I can see what you mean about it not being legit sounding. [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_u]Milo[/name_u] would be super sweet imo!

[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Ivar[/name_m] is stunning, and I think you should definitely keep it in consideration, even though your family doesn’t care for it!

[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_u]Jude[/name_u] is amazing and I don’t think it’s too safe! That’s all I have to say!

[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_u]Rex[/name_u] does seem to clash a bit… [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_u]Pax[/name_u]?

I agree that [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Fraser[/name_m] is quite surname-y.

Love [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] “[name_m]Lawrie[/name_m]”!

My favourites are [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Ivar[/name_m], [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Fraser[/name_m] and [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_u]Jude[/name_u].

Lawrence [name_m]Ivar[/name_m] is handsome, striking and cool. [name_m]Ivar[/name_m] really brings out a strong, dashing side to [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u], which I love. [name_m]Ivar[/name_m] feels totally familiar, but also very unexpected. It’s got a steely Scandi charm and a timeless feel, despite its low popularity.

Lawrence [name_m]Fraser[/name_m] is warm and handsome, and honestly, I don’t think “surname” when I hear [name_m]Fraser[/name_m]. I’ve known more people with it as their first name than as a surname. I really love it, it feels distinguished but easygoing and easy to wear. I think the flow is fantastic and again, not too surnamey to me.

Lawrence [name_u]Jude[/name_u] does have great flow, especially taking your longer surname into consideration. [name_u]Jude[/name_u] is more popular than the other two, but it’s one of those charming, laid-back, effortlessly cool names that never feels tired to me. It still has a slightly quirky charm.

The ones I’d personally strike off…

Lawrence [name_u]Rex[/name_u] – don’t get me wrong, I love [name_u]Rex[/name_u], but to me the sounds here are a bit repetitive: [name_m]Law[/name_m]rence [name_u]Rex[/name_u]. For that reason, if you’re going to go for a cool, quirky-classic, single-syllable middle, I’d go for [name_u]Jude[/name_u] over [name_u]Rex[/name_u]. I was going to suggest [name_u]Fox[/name_u] as a middle ground, but that won’t work for obvious reasons!

Lawrence [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] – I normally love O-ending names for both sexes, but I’ve never fallen for [name_u]Arlo[/name_u]. It seems to have sprung up out of nowhere in recent years, and it just feels a bit… nothingy, to me. A bit insubstantial, a bit lacking in history, somehow? I don’t know, it’s just never really clicked with me. And I do feel it’s stylistically very different from [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u].

Maybe…

Lawrence [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Magnus[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Viggo[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Otto[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Emil[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Frey[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Caspar[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Jesper[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_u]Blair[/name_u]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_u]Flynn[/name_u]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Alban[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Cairn[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Findlay[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Aulay[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_u]Eliot[/name_u]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_u]Adair[/name_u]

(I’ve written [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] so many times now it’s starting to look weird!)
