Pronouncing Megan

So today I was watching a youtube vlog by a girl named [name_u]Lindsey[/name_u], who has a sister named [name_f]Megan[/name_f].
I realize we pronounce [name_f]Megan[/name_f] differently.
I’ve always said [name_f]Megan[/name_f] as [name_f]MAY[/name_f]-gen, and [name_f]Meg[/name_f] as [name_f]MAY[/name_f]-g
She says Mehg-en, with a short e, and [name_f]Meg[/name_f] the same way (w/o the -en, obviously)
[name_m]How[/name_m] weird am I, right? Is this a regional thing?
[name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce [name_f]Megan[/name_f]? What is your general location (if you feel comfortable sharing)? South? [name_f]East[/name_f] Coast? Mid-[name_u]West[/name_u]? [name_f]England[/name_f] or Australia or where ever else you berries might be?
Lol, It’s been driving me insane to think about!

I say (and have heard) it both ways. The soft e pronunciation seems to be a bit more prevalent in the US, and you know, I’ve not heard the name very much in other places.

I’ve never heard [name_f]Meg[/name_f] pronounced with a hard a, though. Only ever with the soft E. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if that person pronounced [name_f]Megan[/name_f] as [name_f]MAY[/name_f]-ghen.

I’m in [name_u]Texas[/name_u]. I pronounce [name_f]Megan[/name_f] as “mehg-en” and [name_f]Meagan[/name_f] as “may-gen”.

Growing up in [name_m]Britain[/name_m] all the [name_f]Megan[/name_f]'s I knew were Welsh and pronounced it ‘[name_f]Meg[/name_f]-[name_f]Ann[/name_f]’ or [name_f]Meg[/name_f]-uhn, I only encountered the Meee-gahn pronunciation on American TV.

Now I know some Australians who say one and some the other!

[name_f]Megan[/name_f] = meh-gin
[name_f]Meg[/name_f] = mehg

Location: [name_m]Washington[/name_m] State, US

*Though, with my accent, may vs. meh isn’t all that different. I’m still not even sure if you’d think I was saying ay or eh?

In [name_m]Ontario[/name_m], [name_f]Canada[/name_f], I always pronounced [name_f]Megan[/name_f] as “mehg-un,” but I’ve noticed here in Queensland, Australia, most people tend to pronounce it “mee-gun.”

I pronounce it with a short “e” sound. I hear Maaaaaygan a lot in the South though.

[name_f]East[/name_f] Coast USA here. I always said [name_f]Megan[/name_f] “meg-gun,” with the first syllable rhyming with egg. And I liked it.

My Aussie husband says Meee-gan and made endless fun of me for saying meggin and insisted that all right-thinking non-Americans say meeee-gan. A British friend finally told him to piss off. LOL.

He likes Meee-gan and I like [name_f]Meg[/name_f]-gun and that’s why we can’t have a [name_f]Megan[/name_f], haha.

I don’t like may-gan at all.

I am a [name_f]Meg[/name_f] from [name_f]Meghan[/name_f], “MEHG” so I love MEHG-un and HATE [name_f]May[/name_f]-gehn.

I’m in a family or Margarets, Maggies, Margots, Peggies, Mollys, and Pollys so the way I say it matters to me. I was named after the book The Thornbirds about an Irish girl growing up in NSW Australia. The character was [name_f]Meghann[/name_f] nn [name_f]Meggie[/name_f].

Everyone where I have lived in the [name_u]West[/name_u] Coast (I’ve spent years in all 3 grew up in [name_f]CA[/name_f], college in WA, now I’m in OR, so basically all [name_m]Pacific[/name_m] Northwest region and some Southern [name_u]California[/name_u]), EVERYONE says [name_f]MAY[/name_f]-gehn and it makes me nuts because they don’t say [name_f]Meg[/name_f] “MAYG”. So why [name_f]MAY[/name_f]-GEHN?

If it was [name_f]Maegan[/name_f] I’d say “[name_f]May[/name_f]-gehn.”

[name_f]Megan[/name_f] or [name_f]Meghan[/name_f] or [name_f]Meghann[/name_f] is “MEHG-un.”

Meegan and Meeghan are pronounced “MEE-guhn.” It’s a first and a last name I’ve heard in the US on weather girls and news announcers, of all people.

Yes! Megg-gun is a way better way to explain the sound than I did! I realize some “ehs” are “ays,” Canadian style. Lol. Rhymes-with-egg is the best way to pronounce [name_f]Meg[/name_f] and the first part of [name_f]Megan[/name_f], [name_f]Imo[/name_f].

Sorry, my cell phone butchered your quote with bad autocorrect. Haha

Yerp us too. The ‘eg’ in [name_f]Megan[/name_f] is the same as ‘egg’.

I’ve heard [name_f]MAY[/name_f]-gun a lot in the Southern U.S., but all the people in the south I know named [name_f]Megan[/name_f]/[name_f]Meghan[/name_f] call themselves [name_f]MEG[/name_f]-in, even if others call them [name_f]MAY[/name_f]-gun. When I see [name_f]Meg[/name_f], I say MEHG.

I’m Australian and to me, [name_f]Megan[/name_f] is ‘me-gan’ (like [name_u]Teagan[/name_u]) although on American TV shows I’ve heard it as "meg-gan’ and ‘may-gan’

[name_f]Megan[/name_f] = meh-gan

That’s the Welsh pronunciation and thus the proper one.

I accept meg-gan as an English alternative.

Anything else is wrong, quite frankly. Mee-gan or may-gun is just butchering it.

Hear the Welsh pronunciation here (you may need to scroll down for it).

I’m in central [name_f]Florida[/name_f], and I pronounce [name_f]Megan[/name_f] [name_f]MAY[/name_f]-gen.

[name_f]Megan[/name_f]: Mee-gan
[name_f]Meghan[/name_f]: Mee-gan or Mehg-an
[name_f]Meg[/name_f]: Mehg
[name_f]Meaghan[/name_f]: Mee-gan or [name_f]Meg[/name_f]-an

I’m in Australia

I’m a [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], nickname [name_f]Meg[/name_f], but I get called [name_f]Megan[/name_f] sometimes by people who think [name_f]Meg[/name_f] is short for [name_f]Megan[/name_f] (my ultimate pet peeve). I pronounce both [name_f]Meg[/name_f] and the a first syllable of [name_f]Megan[/name_f] rhyming with “egg”, but I have heard other people say [name_f]May[/name_f]-gen, too. I live in the American south.

So, my name IS [name_f]Megan[/name_f] and I’ve heard it every conceivable way. I live in [name_m]New[/name_m] Hampshire in the US and we pronounce it [name_f]Meg[/name_f]-IN. It’s the same name as [name_f]Meghan[/name_f] and [name_f]Meagan[/name_f] and whatever billion other ways to spell it. [name_f]May[/name_f]-[name_m]Gan[/name_m] I get once in a while and Mee-gan I got one time. But everyone I know (even family in [name_f]England[/name_f] and Whales) Says [name_f]Meg[/name_f]-IN, basically how it’s spelled, actually.
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] that helps

THANK YOU! My name is [name_f]Megan[/name_f] and I’ve had is butchered soooo many times!!! I mean, come on people, it’s an easy name! lol
