Pronunciation for Maura

I really like the name [name_f]Maura[/name_f], but I’m not sure how it should be pronounced.

More-ah rhymes with [name_f]Dora[/name_f]
[name_f]Mar[/name_f]-ah rhymes with Car- ah
Maw-ah or [name_m]Law[/name_m]- ah

I know it’s spelled like [name_f]Laura[/name_f], and I pronounce that like Car-ah. But in my crazy head I feel like the look alike [name_f]Maura[/name_f] should be pronounced like [name_f]Dora[/name_f].

I say it to rhyme with [name_f]Dora[/name_f], which for me also rhymes with [name_f]Laura[/name_f].

That’s the pronunciation I like best! The only thing is I’m in the south and I wonder if it will be pronounced like I do [name_f]Laura[/name_f]. Thank you for your answer !

I pronounce [name_f]Maura[/name_f] like it were [name_f]Mara[/name_f].

[name_f]Maura[/name_f] like [name_f]Dora[/name_f]! Like [name_f]Maura[/name_f] Isles on Rizzoli and Isles.

I pronounce it to rhyme with [name_f]Dora[/name_f] and [name_f]Laura[/name_f] (and like [name_f]Maura[/name_f] Isles from Rizzoli & Isles). I don’t know why you’d feel inclined to pronounce it any other way…

So most people probably do pronounce it to rhyme with [name_f]Dora[/name_f]. Which in my opinion is the prettier sound. I should’ve set this up as a poll question. Thank you for your answers!

I guess I’m the opposite of you! I see [name_f]Maura[/name_f] pronounced like [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-ah and [name_f]Laura[/name_f] pronounced like [name_f]Lore[/name_f]-ah.

I can see it any of the ways you listed, but I automatically say [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-ah.

I say [name_f]Dora[/name_f]. But I like it like Maw-ra too.

[name_f]Maura[/name_f] and [name_f]Laura[/name_f] rhyme with [name_f]Dora[/name_f] for me. [name_f]Mara[/name_f] would instinctively be mare-ah, mare like the first syllable of [name_f]Mary[/name_f], and [name_f]Cara[/name_f] would be care-ah. I could see [name_f]Mara[/name_f] being pronounced mar-ah (like [name_m]Mark[/name_m]) and [name_f]Cara[/name_f] being car-ah, but [name_f]Maura[/name_f] and [name_f]Laura[/name_f] would only ever rhyme with [name_f]Dora[/name_f].

That’s kind of a problem with this name I’m seeing. The pronunciation is all over the place. And it’s kinda that way with [name_f]Laura[/name_f] too. Thanks everyone !

Lol, it doesn’t make sense to pronounce the two different but I guess it’s whatever gets in our heads…

For me, [name_f]Maura[/name_f] rhymes with [name_f]Dora[/name_f]
