Pronunciation for the name An(n)a

How do you pronounce this name? I thought that if it was spelled with one “N” it was pronounced “Ah-nuh”, whereas with two "N"s it was “Ann-uh”, but maybe it’s the other way around?

I always assume its pronounced like you have it, but I have heard of [name_f]Anna[/name_f] being pronounced AH-nuh, so I wouldn’t be shocked by that. I haven’t ever heard of [name_f]Ana[/name_f] being pronounced Anne-uh

Anna = ANN-uh and maybe AH-nuh if it’s Frozen / in certain countries

Ana = AH-nuh

For me, [name_f]Ana[/name_f] is always AH-nuh like the way the name is pronounced in Frozen.

[name_f]Anna[/name_f] I would always default to ANN-uh, but I have met at least one [name_f]Anna[/name_f] who pronounces it AH-nuh, plus that’s how the Frozen character is spelled and that’s AH-nuh too.

I would say them the way you do, Ana=ah-nuh and Anna=Anne+a, but it varies a lot by region and language. In a lot of places they are both pronounced ah-uh.

I think it depends where you are :person_shrugging:

This would be my intuitive pronunciation:

  • Both Anna and Ana as full names would be ann-uh
  • A name ending in -ana would be ah-nuh
  • A name ending in -anna could be ann-uh, but could be ah-nuh too - I’d probably ask.

I wouldn’t be totally surprised to meet an Ana ‘ah-nuh’ or even an Anna ‘ah-nuh’ but the ones I’ve met have said it ann-uh.

For reference, I’m in the UK, so it is probably different elsewhere

For me, [name_f]Anna[/name_f] is ann-uh and [name_f]Ana[/name_f] is ah-nuh. I have met a lot of Anna’s and a few Ana’s and they have all been pronounced this way, however [name_f]Anna[/name_f] could be ah-nuh thanks to the popularity of frozen.

i always thought anna was ann-uh & ana was are-nuh, then i had a friend named an@ sof!a said ann-uh so now i see them both as ah-nuh! :sunflower:

I agree with your pronunciations, at least in the US.

[name_f]Anna[/name_f] has always been ah-nuh to because of frozen, but [name_f]Ana[/name_f] could be ann-ah for me.

my nickname (and the name I mainly go by) is with one n and i pronounce it Ann-uh (i live in Scotland)
