How would you pronounce [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]
Thanks
This article is really helpful for [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]!
Tl;dr in the past it was usually EV-uh-lin for girls and EEV-lin for boys because the boys were being named after old aristocratic family members whereas the girls were being named for the trend started by the novel [name_f]Evelina[/name_f] (EV-uh-leen-a). In the U.K. if I met an [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] āEEV-Linā Iād assume they were quite posh.
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite: EEV-len / EEV-É-lin (EEV-lin)
In my country it would be āEh-VEH-linā (three syllables) but with that pronunciation, I prefer āEvelineā; for [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], since it is an [name_f]English[/name_f] name, I would prefer the traditional / original [name_f]British[/name_f] pronunciation.
I like both sounds, and would not mind either āEh-VEH-linā or āEEV-len/linā.
EEV-lin
Eev-lin (but I know ev-uh-lin is probably more familiar)
Ever-lyn snd Ev-eh-lyn
iād say EV-uh-lin for girls !! (but EEV-lin for boys) but i prefer EEV-uh-lin, i just know itās less likely to be correct
I say eh-vuh-lin, for girls and ehv-lin for boys. the latter is basically the same as the first just without the uh sound
Ev-uh-lin
Ever-lin
Iām in the American [name_u]South[/name_u] and Iāve only ever heard of āEV-uh-linā, although as a name nerd I am familiar that the EEV-lin pronunciation has been used historically for males. I have never heard of or encountered this pronunciation for a female, however.
In the UK it would be Eve-lyn.
Ehv-uh-lynn in the US
Ev-uh-lin (in Australia)
Where I live either EH-vuh-lyn or EHV-lyn, both with a short E sound.
Iāve only heard the EEV-lyn pronunciation in the context of [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] Waugh.
I am in the UK and the Evelynās I know are all ev-uh-lin
Before joined NB I said EEV-lin, but after being on here for years I say ehv-UH-linn.
EHV-uh-lin for a girl and EEV-lin for a boy! (Southern US here if that makes a difference )
Iāve heard people say EEV-lin but only for a bit, personally I think EV-uh-lin is more common and also a much nicer pronunciation
Ev-uh-lyn in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] with the nn [name_f]Evie[/name_f]. Although I have heard Ev-Lin too! But both with the short āEā as in [name_u]Everett[/name_u]. I think Eve-lin is sooo pretty though. Itās just one of those names with multiple pronunciations none of which are incorrect. I agonized over the pronunciation of my daughterās name and wished I had gone for something with one clear pronunciation only to discover that the other more common name I liked (Amelia) actually had multiple pronunciations too!
