Pronunciation of Anouk?

I love the name [name_f]Anouk[/name_f], but want to double check I am pronouncing it right before I am set on it. At the moment I pronounce it [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-nook where nook rhymes with luke. The other pronunciation I can think of is [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-nook where nook rhymes with book. Which would you use?

I say Ahn-uke, rhymes with [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. I think if you use it, you’ll have to educate people anyways, so they’ll get it. It’s a [name_m]French[/name_m] name, so the ‘ouk’ is not ‘ook’. One of my very favourites!! I won’t use it because I think it would get butchered, but I’d love to see it used more.

If I am not mistaken (which I might be), the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation is [name_m]AH[/name_m]-nook, whereas the Dutch pronunciation is [name_m]AH[/name_m]-nuke. It is probably my favourite name at the moment.

I’d say ann-OOK (rhymes with [name_m]Luke[/name_m], like others have said). It’s a cute name.

I don’t think the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation and the Dutch pronunciation differ much at all, it’s just that this [name_m]Luke[/name_m]/Book distinction is very difficult for a native speaker of either language, and we’d make both words in English sound identical (I’ll refer to a certain Modern Family scene with [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] and [name_m]Luke[/name_m]/look!) so for me this discussion seems rather weird because since in reality it’s neither -uke nor -ook yet it’s both at the same time as well in English, let me just say I wouldn’t mind either way since to me there’s no distinction, it feels equally correct to me in English.

I’ve always said it as if it rhymes with [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. [name_u]Love[/name_u], love, love it!

Thanks for your replies everyone. I absolutely love it- and I’ve been through a whole pile of names to get here :). Lets hope it lasts the next 9 weeks (although I do love this baby naming thing!)

I heard this name in the [name_m]Johnny[/name_m] Depp movie Chocolat, and they pronounced it [name_f]Anouk[/name_f], -nouk rhyming with book. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if it’s not the right pronunciation, I personally think it’s cuter than [name_f]Anouk[/name_f], rhymes with [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. Because, to me, I hear “a nuke” and a name that can be used - and make sense - in the sentence, “The army just got a nuke to use” doesn’t appeal.

That’s really interesting. It never would have occurred to me that [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and Book to non-native speakers sound the same! But I do get the idea that the pronunciation is something between the two that is - apparently - unapproachable for the American tongue.
