Pronunciation of Briony

I’m due [name_u]July[/name_u] 9 and gender is unknown.

[name_f]Bryony[/name_f]/[name_f]Briony[/name_f] has always been in the back of my mind for a girls name. [name_f]Kate[/name_f] will be the middle name. I always research a name before choosing it, and disappointingly I found that it’s typically pronounced BRY-oh-nee and not [name_f]BRIE[/name_f]-oh-nee like I originally thought. I love the sound of [name_f]Brie[/name_f]-oh-knee (nn [name_f]Brie[/name_f]) and quite dislike the proper pronunciation. [name_m]How[/name_m] do I get too [name_f]BRie[/name_f]-oh-nee and be grammatically correct about it? My husbands name is [name_m]Byron[/name_m], so I thought was nice to have a name so similar in letters

I also have thought of [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] for a girl (nn [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]) but I am getting hung up on the fact it’s really a boys name. I feel [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] isn’t strong enough to stand on its own, although my husband disagrees. Middle would still be [name_f]Kate[/name_f].

My other 2 kids names are [name_f]Mikaela[/name_f] and [name_u]Theo[/name_u]. Our last name is “[name_m]Long[/name_m]”

I’m also totally lost for boys names but that’s for a whole other post hah.

I quite like [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] for a girl, and if you’re worried about it being too masculine maybe try it out with a traditionally feminine middle?

[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]
[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_f]Odette[/name_f]
[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_f]Camille[/name_f]

I also like [name_f]Emi[/name_f] as a variation of [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] for a stand alone - meaning beautiful, smile, or blessing depending on which Japanese meaning you want to go with!

As for [name_f]Bryony[/name_f], I only know one [name_f]Bryony[/name_f] and she pronounces her name the “traditional” way. I’m not too sure how you would get people to pronounce it the way you’re hoping for without actually having to say it outloud. Spelling changes might get too complicated? I’m not sure. It’s a beautiful name, pronounced either way, so I wish you luck!

Watch the movie Atonement to get used to the correct [name_f]Briony[/name_f] pronunciation :stuck_out_tongue: worked for me. It’s quite pretty and rhymes more with [name_m]Byron[/name_m].

Not sure how to help you with [name_f]Briony[/name_f]. I feel like people would be more likely to pronounce that particular spelling the way you like it, as opposed to the original spelling [name_f]Bryony[/name_f]. However, I adore the original pronunciation so I hesitate to encourage you to use the other way haha.

[name_f]Emmy[/name_f] is an adorable nickname. I think it’s a bit too cutesy to stand alone but nickname names such as [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] are quite popular as full names, and cutsey names like [name_f]Kylie[/name_f] and [name_f]Kinsley[/name_f] are also popular so I don’t think [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] is too far out there. I prefer [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] for a boy but I don’t mind it on girls. Other ways to get to [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]:

[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]
[name_u]Emery[/name_u]
[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]
[name_u]Ember[/name_u]
[name_f]Gemma[/name_f]
[name_f]Emiliana[/name_f]
[name_f]Emelina[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f]

[name_f]Emme[/name_f] has more strength than [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], [name_f]IMO[/name_f], so that’s an option too.

Thank you! The middle name will be [name_f]Kate[/name_f] so do feel that would balance [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] out well. Also great suggestion about [name_f]Emi[/name_f], I did not know the meaning of it.

And yes, that’s my worry about “misspelling” [name_f]Briony[/name_f] to get the pronunciation I want… it will just come off as tacky and made up I’m sure.

Thanks for the reply

@abertawe. Thanks! I will do that :slight_smile:

@sparkleninja18. Thanks for the other suggestions. And I agree about “[name_f]Emme[/name_f]”

Not sure how to help with [name_f]Briony[/name_f]. I second the suggestion of watching Atonement to learn to love the traditional pronunciation. If you simply want to get to the [name_f]Brie[/name_f] nickname you could try something like [name_f]Brianna[/name_f]?

I think [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] can work on a girl; however, I had a friend in HS whose full name was [name_f]Emmie[/name_f], so it always seemed sufficient to me. Otherwise:
[name_f]Emma[/name_f]
[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]

For what it’s worth, I would have pronounced it your preferred way, I didn’t know the common pronunciation.

[name_f]Briony[/name_f] is beautiful with the traditional pronunciation, and [name_f]Briony[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] would be a stellar combination - sophisticated, strong, unusual, and very pretty. I’m not sure there’s an appealing and intuitive way to respell [name_f]Briony[/name_f]/[name_f]Bryony[/name_f] to get to your preferred pronunciation, and, to be honest, I’m not sure you should! If you don’t like the sound of the name, then perhaps pick another that you do like. [name_f]Briana[/name_f] or [name_f]Briona[/name_f] spring to mind, being very close in sound to [name_f]BREE[/name_f]-oh-nee. Or how about the super-rare floral [name_f]Peony[/name_f], or other “[name_f]Brie[/name_f]” options like [name_f]Cambria[/name_f]/[name_f]Cambrie[/name_f]?

I third this, haha! If you are really crazy about [name_f]Brie[/name_f], I guess it could work as a standalone. I think there is an actress with this name.

I don’t know but I say [name_f]Bree[/name_f]-OH-nee
