[name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce [name_u]Ellis[/name_u], for a girl’s name? I thought it was pronounced similarly to [name_f]Alice[/name_f], but just saw on another baby name site that for a girl it would be pronounced [name_f]El[/name_f]-EEce. What do you think? I fell in love with the former, but am now thrown off that someone would think it’s pronounced like the latter.

[name_u]Ellis[/name_u] is very similar to [name_f]Alice[/name_f]. In [name_u]Grey[/name_u]'s Anatomy, the mother of the main character’s name is [name_u]Ellis[/name_u], and it’s pronounced like [name_f]Alice[/name_f].

I say [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] differently but the ending is the same soft “iss” sound. Definitely not elle-EESE which is [name_f]Elise[/name_f]. I say [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] as [name_f]ELLE[/name_f]-iss

[name_u]Ellis[/name_u] is a fairly common last name where I live and there’s an [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] Road. I’ve never heard anyone pronounce it any way other than ‘[name_f]ELLE[/name_f]-is’.

I say [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] differently ([name_f]Elle[/name_f]-iss and [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-liss, in my accent that’s quite a bit difference) but [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] is definitely closer to [name_f]Alice[/name_f] than it is to [name_f]Elise[/name_f] ([name_f]Elle[/name_f]-eese).
[name_u]Ellis[/name_u] is a boy’s name. It’s pronounced [name_f]ELL[/name_f]-is.

I’ve only ever met boys named [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] ([name_f]ELL[/name_f]-iss). The name you’re describing I’ve only ever seen spelled [name_f]Elise[/name_f] or [name_f]Elyse[/name_f].

My grandparents live on [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] [name_m]Street[/name_m]. But yeah elle-is is how I pronounce it.
If you are not in the US perhaps this would not be the case, but I think that almost everyone would immediately pronounce [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] el-iss, as in [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] Island, since that is the obvious association. Quite a pretty name, and one that is entirely unisex, in my opinion.
[name_f]ELL[/name_f]-iss, to me there’s no other pronunciation. I live in the US.
